Another wrestling season is underway, and here's another place to follow it ...
Welcome to a new home for news, opinions and -- I hope -- some feedback from you, the fan, on the latest happenings on the mat ...
I'm new to the Sun-Times News Group, but not new to the wrestling beat ... as a writer for the Times of Northwest Indians's Illinois edition, I covered most of the state tournaments over the past 20 years ... I learned pretty early on that the sport's fans are among the most passionate around ... which makes sense, because Illinois has some of the best high school wrestling in the country ...
Thanks for stopping by, and please check in often ... questions and comments are always welcome, so fire away ...

On the Boer's and Bernstein sports show on the Score last week, one of these gentlemen said that "wrestling is not a sport"!!!. Could you please tell them or write them and ask them if they have ever wrestled? I tried to get through on the phone but never could.
If they ever wrestled they certainly would know that wrestling is a great sport and makes MEN of boys. It is a very disciplined and character building sport. You can either be flying high or very down. I have a son (who is now a head coach for one of the Maine Schools in Park Ridge, as well a wrestler in high school. When he was young there were not these wonderful feeding programs which exist.
I have one grandson who finished third in state twice. He also won state twice in the IKWF. I have two grandsons wrestling in high school now, one of which is rated 13th in the state but expects to move up.
I have two more grandsons wrestling in the feeder program to this high school. So if Boers and Bernstein do not think this is a sport, they should watch some of this wrestling and then say that it is not a sport.
Mike says: They may be talking about pro wrestling, which is more about entertainment than anything ... but if they're talking about prep or college wrestling, they're obviously wrong ...

I happened to be listening to the Score when Boers and Bernstein made their comments regarding the vailidity of wrestling as a sport. They were, in fact, commenting on phonier-than-a-three-dollar-bill all-star wrestling and not amateur, freestyle wrestling.
