Rios, Crain, Santiago named to WBC rosters

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

White Sox Alex Rios, Jesse Crain and Hector Santiago were named to provisional rosters for the World Baseball Classic on Thursday. Rios and Santiago were named to team Puerto Rico -- although Santiago has not decided whether he will participate and said Thursday he is leaning toward not participating -- and Crain will play for Canada. There are no Sox on the Team USA roster.

Prospects Andre Rienzo and Andy Gonzalez will play for Brazil and Puerto Rico, respectively. Rienzo is considered a top prospect in the Sox system.

Rios played in 2006 and '09. This will be Crain's third time as well.

All 16 teams have until Feb. 20 to file formal rosters. Team USA has to make one addition to its 15-man pitching staff. The team will be managed by Joe Torre.

Important dates: First round March 2-6 in Japan, March 2-5 in Taiwan, March 7-10 in Puerto Rico and March 7-10 in Phoenix. Second round March 8-12 in Japan and March 12-16 in Miami. The semifinals and finals are March 17-19 in San Francisco.
