``Streaky'' White Sox Still In It

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

The White Sox have had win streaks and slumps like the current June swoon. But Jake Peavy believes his team still is in ``a great position'' to contend for post-season play.
``We haven't played our best baseball lately, but we haven't played that badly either,'' he said Sunday. ``We've been in a lot of games where that haven't swung our way. We've been streaky, streakier than we probably want to be.
``Interleague play we've always done well in and we're not doing so well now. The bigger thing we have to focus on is today. We know we have a tough road trip coming up [starting Monday in Minnesota, then to New York to play the Yankees.] I think we're going to grind it out to the All Star break. We're in a great position that a lot of people didn't expect of us. We're happy to be in this position.''
Peavy and the Sox know there are trade rumors in the wind involving the possible acquisition of third baseman Kevin Youkilis from Boston.
``I think [Sox management] understands we've had some big injuries [including third baseman Brent Morel and starters John Danks and Philip Humber.] But we're still playing well. They [management] are no different than we are--they know we have a chance to win this thing.
``But we have to worry about what we have here. If there's change, we'll accept it.''
Peavy said he personally feels as healthy as he has in years. His ERA of 2.74 is seventh best in the American League.
``I know I've been through a lot in my time in Chicago [with a detached lat muscle], but I feel health is a non-issue now. Of course health is an issue for everyone who plays the game, but I feel as healthy as a Gavin Floyd or anyone. The body's a fragile thing, but I feel as well as I have in years.''
