LOS ANGELES -- Rookie Jose Quintana's eight scoreless innings went for naught after the Los Angeles Dodgers scored a run in the ninth inning against closer Addison Reed before scoring the winning run for a 2-1 walkoff victory in the 10th inning on Sunday.
Tony Gwynn tripled with one out, skipping a liner past left fielder Jordan Danks that went to the wall. Danks gambled by diving instead of make the safe play to keep the hit as a single. Dee Gordon's two-out single to left scored Gwynn. Matt Thornton (2-5) pitched the 10th for the Sox.
Dayan Viciedo singled in Brent Lillibridge from third with two outs in the sixth for the Sox' run.
Quintana (3-1) allowed five hits and no walks while striking out six. Dodgers lefty Chris Capuano struck out 12.
The Dodgers had a run taken away on an appeal play at third base in the sixth inning. Matt Treanor was ruled to have left third base too soon on Elian Herrera's fly to right fielder Alex Rios.
Juan Rivera's sacrifice fly against Reed scored Bobby Abreu with the tying run in the ninth.
