The worst-case scenario

Is Carlos Quentin the guy the White Sox could least afford to lose? Well, he's gone. Fractured wrist requires surgery Monday. Does anyone think he'll be back in '08?

What do you do with the outfield? Griffey in left? Swisher in center?

Looks like Swisher in left tonight.

Good thing Twins are 3-7 in last 10, atlhough now they're home.

I still say Sox win the division.

Sox offense will be fine. Konerko and Uribe have been stepping it up. And the astute GM..KW and Field Mgr. Oz shows the armchair GM's and sceptics why they have Uribe and Griffey. As they know what protection they needed in the long stretch toward playoffs. Of course the big question mark "is if the pitching holds up, but the Twins have the same thing going for them. Danks biggest question as last two outings were sub-par. And relievers Logan, Dotel , Thornton and even Carassco have been good and bad. And really cannot afford anymore bad outings by them.

Doubt Carlos will be back for regular season with only 22 to play. But if Sox make playoffs its possible. Crede hardly making a good impression for free agent seekers is doubtful. But when a guy like Carlos goes down it sometimes makes a team better. Players realize we must step it up & come together .We don't have Carlos to look over our shoulder at to carry us. Only one game, but sox showed they can do it minus Quinten. But with 22 left plus three with Twins in Minnesota sox must dig in & get job done!

@Don: They only have Uribe because no one else would take him off their hands, and they only have Griffey because Swisher's season was far worse than anyone could have imagined. It's good they have him now, but the Griffey trade was an act of contrition, not of genius - and he was never meant to spell Quentin anyway.

With Wise, Anderson, Swisher, Owens, Griffey Jr, Dye, Alexei to play the outfield I'm not concerned. If you're best slugger has to go down, expanded roster time softens the blow.

I'm more concerned about Crede. We need is heroics in time for the Minny series. I'm praying for Joe.

On the plus side, the Sox have plenty of arms now to consume innings and the added plus of Linebrink to pitch the 8th. That should bolster the performance of the rotation like it has in yr's past.

Finally, Minny has another killer road trip before the WSox. If the Jays can sweep them, so can the Rays. Nothing short of sweeps at home will keep them in this race.

Ozzie MUST fine AJ for the latest baserunning gaffe last night. There is abosultely NO reason under the sun for him to be caught off of third base in that situation. This is high school baseball baserunning 101. If one of my high school baseball teammates would have commited that mental error, our coach would have had him running 100 yard wind sprints until his tongue was hanging out of his mouth. The Polish Prince simply makes too many mental errors on the basepath.

LAST NIGHT'S 15 INNING WIN OVER THE ANGELS SHOWED CHISOX CAN OVERCOME QUENTIN'S LOSS. THEY HAVE A FINE SUBSTITUTE NO. 3 HITTER IN DYE (AND PERHAPS RAMIREZ) AND HAVE OUTFIELD DEPTH WITH GRIFFEY AND JERRY OWENS ON BOARD. QUENTIN CARRIED THE TEAM EARLY IN THE SEASON AND TODAY THERE IS BALANCE IN THE ATTACK. IT ISN'T EASY TO LOSE TWO ALL-STARS (QUENTIN AND CREDE) BUT LOOK HOW THE TEAM IS PLAYING WITHOUT THEM. THEY ARE THE ESSENCE THAT EVERYONE ON THE ROSTER CONTRIBUTES EQUALLY. THE PLAYER SOX CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE IS NOT QUENTIN, IT'S GAVIN FLOYD. WIHTOUT HIM, THEY ARE SUNK. THE SECOND MOST CRITICAL PLAYER IS BOB JENKS.

ANDREW , No one said acquiring Griffey was a genius move. As KW said at the time could spell several different players and give them rest . EXACTLY what he has been doing and a big PLUS of hellping offensively several times BIG! Plus has played CF with out any problems as some sceptics would spew. Uribe was put on waivers for feelers, as many players ARE and you don't know what was offered. What it all says is that Sox are real fortunate to have Juan a W/S
veteran. And the decision to let Ozuna go and keep Uribe was what I referred to as an astute choice even tho sceptic's that know diddely , were against it. Ozuna has been released by Dodgers now also. After injury last year hasn't been the same player.

If the SOX can get another 3 to 5 games up (in the loss column) over the Twinkies, the AL central is theirs. Quentin carried the team all the way to now. Konerko is finally coming around, DYE is rock solid, there is enough defense and decent pitching that makes the SOX the ALC Choice, if the Twins continue their present play. If the SOX are 6 to 8 up (in the loss column) over Minn., the Twins HAVE to play almost flawless ball and win more than 80% of their remaining games to catch the Sout' Siders. Ain't gonna happen.

What the heck is Oz thinking?

Jim Thome - Smacks a game winning Dinger to win a critical division leader contest; Moves ahead of the Mick's career HR total;

And Ozzie "rests: him the next day (Sunday)?

Thome is 38 not 83. Makes millions of dollars a year (and worth it), and he needs to be rested? Yeah - Take 30 HR's out of the lineup now that Quentin is done. Come on, there's only 20 games left. Jim can rest all winter!

I swear the SOX would have 90 wins already if someone else managed this club.

Around the central:

While the WSox were being shafted by the ump on the left corner of the plate the Twins bullpen melted down again & lost a series at home to the Tigers. The Tribe beat the Roys 3-1 as Lee went to 21-2.

I hope the WSox filed a greviance vs that ump because his behavior was criminal. Same pitch, same location. He called it a ball for WSox pitchers, & a strike for Angels pitchers. That is a HUGE adv in a ball game as it expands the zone for the Angels.

Even so the WSox were down 3-2 in the 9th with a RISP. If they play as well vs the Jays as they did vs the Angels they should win this series.

Don't forget to root for the O's as well. They'll be entertaining the Tribe & Twins at home & it would be great for the Sox if they could slow the momentum of both. The O's will be helped by the fact they won't face Lee or Lariano.
