Ozzie vs. Morgan

| 18 Comments | No TrackBacks

DETROIT – It was vintage Ozzie Guillen before Sunday night’s game, as he didn’t take kindly to ESPN broadcaster Joe Morgan questioning the fact that Guillen told reporters on Saturday that he felt Ivan Rodriguez, not Roberto Clemente, was the greatest player to come out of Puerto Rico.

Morgan told Guillen he was “crazy,’’ starting a series of “FU’s’’ from Guillen.
What Morgan didn’t know was Guillen is a huge collector of Clemente memorabilia, as well as gave his son, Oney, the middle name of Roberto.
“The problem is these old guys think that none of the players now are better than back then,’’ Guillen said.
He then sighted an example, bringing up how Babe Ruth was fat and out of shape, but yet was a dominant hitter and pitcher back in "the old days.''
“Babe Ruth couldn’t even play now,’’ Guillen insisted.
Morgan was trying to laugh it off, but Guillen sure wasn’t.
For the record, Guillen’s order of great Puerto Rican players is Rodriguez, Roberto Alomar and then Clemente.

Let's see: Mariotti's next column about the White Sox. Will it be a complimentary one, highlighting the impressive 4-2 road trip, with the seemingly much-improved bullpen and offense? Or will he somehow find a way to, say, make an issue out of Ozzie's view of who is the best player ever to come out of Puerto Rico? You'd think the work of Danks, Floyd, Linebrink, Jenks, and Quentin would be enough to generate a positive article out of him about the Sox. But why oh why do I feel something negative coming? Let's wait and see.

Joe Morgan is an arrogant cocky jerk for some odd reason he thinks he god's gift to baseball.

All you have to do is look at the stats to see that Guillen is wrong. Let's not pretend Guillen thinks before he talks. He was sticking up for his friends. Who takes anything Ozzie says serious?

Hey Ozzie, what about Joey Cora?!

Hey, Rick How you like Buerhle now?

You don't suppose we could ship these two off into space together to finish the debate?

Von, you couldn't be more wrong, Pudge has more HRs, and way more gold gloves. Guillen is absolutely correct. He is the second best hitting catcher ever to Mike Piazza and BY FAR the best fielding catcher ever. Where does Clemente rank among outfielders? Certainly behind Ruth, Aaron, Mays, Mantle, Williams, Cobb, Griffey Jr., Bonds, and several others.

I have to agree that Morgan sometimes thinks more of himself than anyone else does. How dare somebody disagree with him, the great Joe Morgan! However, I did feel he shed a respectful light on the whole conversation he had with Guillen and took the time to think it over instead of just dismissing it on the air like a lot of the ESPN crew tend to do... he's the best of the worst in my opinion. It's better than listening to Joe Buck or, may he get heathly soon, Rick Sutfcliffe.

No one changes a game behind the plate like pudge. RIP Roberto.

I agree with the comment about Mariotti; he will find some negative angle about the good start, but nevermind. The Sox looked good yesterday. Buehrle was solid, we got timely hitting, and people were patient at the plate, making Verlander throw a ton of pitches. I was particularly impressed with Quentin working deep into counts and hustling on the basepaths.

My only concern is not being able/willing to bunt with two men on and no outs. Could be a serious factor in closer ball games. I don't want to see five or six double plays a game this year.

Clemente vs I-Rod vs Alomar: If you don't put much stock in I-Rod's rumored usage of roids/HGH then he's the clear favorite. If you figure he's got 2-3 good yrs left his #'s will rank #1 amongst all catchers. He's got the WS ring with the Marlins as well.

IMO, Alomar's the best of the 3. You've got to look at where they hit in their respective lineups to really understand their impact. I-Rod & Clemente where middle guys & Alomar was at the top. What Alomar did near/at the top overshadows what Clemente & I-Rod did/do in the middle. Alomar had a career high 55 SB, & avg'd 32 SB/yr for his career.

If Joe Morgan wants to be a viable reporter, he's going to have to accept the OPINIONS of other people when he asks for them.

i agree
Marrioti is seriously the most ignorant sports writer ever
but hey let him do his talking it is just all talk anyway
and where are thoese people now that wanted to boycott sox games?

Ozzie is just IGNORANT. All we wnat you to do is MANAGE this team. And you cant even do that right!

He needs to be FIRED!!!!!!!

Think ya going to the series again with this fat, slow overweight team?? If anyone wanted to play for us we could have had a better team.

No one wants to play for us because of Ozzie. He just need to do what he gets paid to do---MANAGE.

Or take an American baseball trophy to a dicatorship country who just threatened the US in Venzuela again......

Ozzie needs to be FIRED!!!!

As someone who grew up in Pittsburgh and had the extreme pleasure of watching Roberte Walker Clemente hie entire career,I would have to disagree with Ozzie. Clemente is probably the second best player I ever saw behind Willie Mays. He did not have the homeruns others had because he had to adapt his hitting style to an enormous Forbes Field, where the fences were more than 450 feet away. His arm and throwing ability have never been surpassed and he excellent baserunning ability. Unfortunately Roberto did not have the benefit of being surrounded by any good hitters, except for late in his career, when he had Willie Stargell. Thus he often had to hit what the pitchers felt like throwing. He's still the best of the Puerto Ricans, but Pudge and Alomar are and should be considered high on an all-time list.

Too shay to all the Joe Morgan sceptics..I can't stand to listen to his ego rants repeating everything 3 times like we "the Fans" don't know anything.
