Plenty of Work Space

NASHVILLE – It’s been a nice little credo for the past seven years or so, but “under the radar’’ is easier said than done for general manager Ken Williams these days.

Private negotiations with free agent outfielder Torii Hunter gone public were the latest examples of that.

But spending the next four days in what can only be described as the cavernous Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, Williams will not only have what seems like miles of land to pull off his latest covert operations, but plenty of trees and bushes to hide behind in what can best be described as a make-shift Hillbilly Rain Forest.

Already acquiring outfielder Carlos Quentin from the Arizona Diamondbacks this afternoon, Williams’ tinkering with the outfield isn’t finished. The Sox are now rumored to be “heavy players’’ in the free agent sweepstakes to land Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome.

The Japanese media in attendance have described the left-handed hitting Fukudome as a cross between Ichiro and Kaz Matsui, able to play center field or the corners. The problem? He is still weighing a decision on staying in Japan to play or going Prince Akeem and “Coming to America.’’

Time is a luxury, however, the Sox do not have, still waiting to see what happens with Boston outfielder Coco Crisp in the Johan Santana rumors, as well as deciding if they want to up the years for free agent Aaron Rowand and starting negotiations with their former center fielder.

One thing is for sure, though. At least Williams will have plenty of room to operate this week.

The Quentin trade is a nice little deal, emphasis on little. But it will hardly propel the White Sox past the Red Sox or Yankees. And while the White Sox SAY they want Fukudome, actions speak louder than words. Looks to be a bleak 2008!!

Plenty of room to operate indeed. Williams has all the room in the world really. But he will not pull the trigger. The White Sox will lose out on any bidding war I am sad to admit. So when you don't want to REALLY spend, you have a lot of room.

OK Kenny, I know it fun to sit around and hope that Santana gose to the national league. I say get off your butt and offer Minnisota Owens, Crede and Floyd for Santana. You'll still have Fields at 3rd. You then sign Rowand for center and bring up his buddy Brian Anderson for left. This gives you the best starting pitching staff in baseball. The money you save on Crede will go towards Rowand. Also gives you a great defensive outfield in Anderson, Rowand and Dye. I think Anderson is ready to produce.

if whom ever kenny williams gets, yu can book it that he wants another championship on the south side, not just for the future
but for 2008. ill be there no matter what, but one thing i wont do is cheer for those crybabys on the other side. we won a championship in 05 & where still # 2 in chicago. maybe just maybe we will have a city world series

Why on earth would the Twins accept a third baseman coming off back surgery, a noodle armed, weak hitting centerfielder and a back of the rotation starter with little upside for the best pitcher in baseball? I am a Sox fan but it's getting embarrassing lately. Sox fans need to stop over rating our players. Crede will get a fringe reliever or a "B" prospect at best if you trade him now. And if the Sox don't get into a bidding war with Rowand that is a good thing. He isn't that good. Say to hell with Boras and pay Andruw Jones what he wants.

Why would Minnesota trade Santana within their division? And if they did that, why would they do it for Owens, Crede and Floyd?

Keep Crede and Fields, try one or the other at second base. With the two of them in the lineup, the Sox will be a dynamo team. Your looking at sixty home runs between the two.

"we won a championship in 05 & where still # 2 in chicago." Which side of town has the crybabys? At least when Hendry decides who he wants, he goes and gets him. No excuses. Go Cubs!

Tom, you had me until the inane remark about Andruw Jones. Why in the world would you give Jones, who clearly is in decline and on the downside of his career, whatever he wants, ESPECIALLY given that Boras would ask for the entire organization if you let him...
Kenny's got his plate full. I'll hate it when he trades Crede. I'll hate it more when he installs Fields as the full-time 3B. But it sure wouldn't break my heart if he managed to get Fukudome in a coup from the Cubs.

I say Uribe, Contreras and an unregistered handgun to be named later for anyone. Oh crap, its starting to snow.

KENNY WILLIAMS!!! WHAT A JOKE !!!
ALL U HEAR IS WHERE AFTER THIS GUY AND THAT GUY...
KENNY IS NOT GOING TO LAND ANY BIG NAME PLAYER.. ILL BET MY CK ON THAT...
IF HE PLANS ON CONTENDING IN 2008 HE BETTER PULL OFF SOMETHING BIG..

FIRST T.HUNTER NOW THIS....
YOU ARE A GUTLESS GM. U TALK IS CHEAP..AND IAM SPEAKING FOR MY SELF AND ALOT OF OTHER SOX FANS...
U HAVENT DONE A DAM THING TO INPROVE THIS TEAM...

Welcome to our biggest nightmare. Tigers pretty much wrote the script for us losing 900 games over the next 10 yrs. Atleast there owner had the decency to have some shame after a 119 loss season and open up his pockets. I'm sick to my stomach this morning and this hurts more than the time i passed a kidney stone.

Thank you Kenny .... all words, no action !!!

Many of you fans r so ignorant. Kenny Williams don't have the freedom to meet some of the contract demands. It's not his money.
But the sox r making the same mistake that's been haunting the cubs 4 years by doing patch work. They should trade everyone 4 prospects and come back to compete in about 3 yrs, just as the Marlins r doing 4 the 3rd time (2 titles).

Well guess what team..the Tigers did what they did ..what 06,07
and no Gold.
Don`t sweat the Tigers...they have to make a bigger splash than the Sox.
You think they are content in Detroit?

I JUST CANNOT TAKE IT ANYMORE. GO TIGERS AND WHOEVER PLAYS THE WHITE SOX. YOU HAVE ALL THIS MONEY----DO NOT HAVE TO PAY RENT FOR THE STADIUM----AND YOU GIVE US A HAS BEEN BEFORE HE STEPS ON THE FIELD

DO NOT SPEND ANY MONEY AT US CELLULAR FIELD IN 2008

BOYCOTT THE WHITE SOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kenny is not under the radar he is unconscience! What is it going to take to get it through to the Whitesox? The fans came out in record numbers in the last couple of years and all we get is this? The chairman promised if the fans came out we would spend the money! This team is worse than last years joke! The saddest part is we brought back the majority of a 90 loss team. NOt to mention they think it is an abberation! NOt true this team lost 50 games after the allstar break in 2006!!!!!!!!!!!!!! An empty ballpark is the only thing they understand!!!!!!!!!

WELL,WELL, MERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU WHITE SOX FANS FROM: TORII HUNTER, MIGUEL CABRERA, FOKUSOME SAKE, ANDREW JONES, AND ESPECIALLY FROM AARON ROWAND, AND OF COURSE, AND NO LESS JERRY SCROOGE REINSDORF AND HIS MOROON AND PUPPET KENNY UNDER THE RADAR WILLIAMS. AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ilove IT !!

THE CUBBIES OUTBID THE SOX AGAIN ON AN ALL-STAR OUTFIELDER WHO THE SOX NEEDED ANT WANTED!!

The White Sox will ALWAYS be behind the CUBS. In popularity, attendance---why dont the SOX just move out of Chicago?? The space could be used for something less annoying. Ha Ha!!!!

NO BODY CARES ABOUT THE SUX!!!!

Now That Rowands and Fukodome are gone what big fish are left Kenny? You conned Buehrle and Dye along with countless White Sox fans into thinking you would make major changes to the 07 Sox.You can't catch the big ones with cheap lures. Why don't you and Reindorf go along with Jerry Kruse on a real fishing trip.Embarresed to call myself a Sox fan.

BOYCOTT THE WHITE SOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SOX fans please get a grip and stop looking to place blame on pointing a finger instead of listening and understanding correctly what has transpired over the last few weeks. Players were for the having but when some teams want to overpay for old talent and when our farm system is depleted with not enough to offer for a trade you make it seem like it is so easy to do. I wish all these negative people on here took over for one year and would get a real kick in the behind on learning how to do business.
Of course what would be complete without an "Anonymous" Cub fan making fun of the SOX. If you really want to laugh and ridicule something funny how about slime ball fans like this one that cannot even put their name to their post for the shame of letting people know they are Cubs fans. How sad and pathetic an organization that cannnot win with any sort of talent. Just to let you know since you are busy getting drunk or looking for your boyfriend in Wrigleyville the SOx outbid the Cubs in the end of all this.

All the ripping aside. Lets just look at the facts. 1. Horrble Farm System - Which means you have nothing to trade. 2. Unwillingness to take a "risk" - Rowand wanted one more year. 3. Unwillingness to pay extra money- Hunter and paying him 90 million instead of 75 million. So there was no way they were going to get Cabrera because they didnt have the players to offer. THey could have gotten Rowand if they wanted to give an extra year. They could have gotten Hunter if they were willing to pay 90 million. Now you werent going to have both Hunter and Rowand. So to me it comes down to 90 million or an extra year. The Sox are desperate so they should have taken the risk. So despite all of the HYPE by Kenny Williams. The reality was, the only one he had a viable shot at was Rowand. We cant make trades, no farm system, we dont want to spend money (Hunter). So where does that leave us? Kenny Williams with alot of talk but no ammo, no money to spend and no prospects to trade. Also on the Fukodome front, he just DIDNT want to come here!
