'The biggest wake-up call ever'

| | Comments (35) | TrackBacks (0)

Simon Cowel''s other show -- one of several -- is an "American Idol"-like singing contest in the U.K. called "Britain's Got Talent." Like "Idol," many of the contestants are fresh-faced youngsters who could double as catalog models. Until this week.

A woman named Susan Boyle strolls in -- she's 47, she's frumpy, she's dowdy, and she lives with her cat, Pebbles. The show sets her up to be a sad sack. And then she opens her mouth to sing ...

Watch the audience's faces before. Then watch them jump to their feet when she sings and absolutely nails it. Watch Simon's eyebrows and his wistful -- yes, wistful -- smile. Watch Susan win one for the rest of the world. And hear the other judge, Amanda Holden, say, "That was the biggest wake-up call ever!" It is, after all, a show about finding undiscovered talent. Go, girl.

We're not quite sure what to say about this video from a Tupelo, Mississippi NBC morning show, so we'll let "The Breakfast Song" speak for itself:

TV blokes and babes do bloody good American accents

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

A growing number of television actors are not only studying scripts, they're also studying American vowels and consonants. Popular actors from England, Australia and New Zealand have found a home on the small screen playing American characters.

Read the story here, and watch video examples here ...

Despite his rant about artistic integrity at the Smashing Pumpkins' hometown shows a few weeks back, Billy Corgan allowed a new Pumpkins song to debut via -- wait for it -- a Hyundai commercial during last night's Super Bowl. That's the ad with the tune above. Whatever. Stop funding this whack job, suckers.

Monty Python reclaims YouTube!

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

I myself am guilty of satisfying the occasional Monty Python jones by romping through the thousands of clips available online, particularly at YouTube. But, of course, none of these are official, and most of them are of crap quality.

But now the Monty Python blokes themselves are taking care of this -- announcing, in a new YouTube video, that they're launching the Monty Python channel on the site.

As Janeane Garofalo said in "Reality Bites": "Oh, would you two just do it and get it over with?"

The decades-long tension between "Star Trek" pioneers William Shatner and George Takei reached a boiling point in months past when the two schoolyard babies argued back and forth -- through various media, not directly to each other -- about whether or not Shatner was invited to the recent wedding of Takei and his partner, Brad Altman. It continues with a new video out this week ...

Sneak peek at the new '90210'

| | Comments (2) | TrackBacks (0)

"Cooler! Sexier! More provocative!"

Here's a promo video looking at the new "Beverly Hills, 90210" next-gen spin-off, which seems awfully ambitious — trying to cram in every conceivable stock character from "The Breakfast Club" to the original "90210" to "The O.C." There's even a cougar-ish mom promising that the show will show us "not only the world of the teenagers but also the world of the adults." Eeeuw.

Ah, but look at all those sunny smiles and shaky, dynamic, "Real World"-when-it-was-new cinematography. Makes me feel like I need to study for chem lab.

Summing up 'Lost' in a single word

| | Comments (2) | TrackBacks (0)

We know we've said it more than a few times. But until this video showed up on YouTube recently, we didn't realize how many times the characters in "Lost" had similarly shown disbelief and bewilderment by the endless plot twists and shocking revelations on their infernal island — by saying, simply, "What?!"

Enjoy this ingenious montage, and feel comforted that Jack, Sawyer and even Ben are just as stunned as you are most of the time...

Winners were announced today in the 2007 YouTube Video Awards.

The winners were a little surprising. Expected viral stars such as Obama Girl and that hysterical "leave Britney alone!" whiner did not earn honors. Take a look at the winners here...
