'Scrubs'
Three and a half stars
9 and 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on WLS-Channel 7
Can you stretch the magic? Can you throw a bunch of newbies into the mix and expect a medical miracle?
Apparently. I can confirm that, yes: Sacred Heart will go on. In season nine of "Scrubs," the focus will be shifting from the old school (Zach Braff) to a new class of med students.
To fit in at the hospital, you pretty much have to be diagnosed as terminally quirky. And as luck would have it, the new castmembers are suitably fast-paced and whimsical.
Kerry Bishe steps in for Braff's J.D. as insecure narrator Lucy, and matches his offbeat stride. She's the kind of person who's never seen herself naked. "I've been naked, but I've never looked down," she explains. If J.D. wasn't already having a baby with Sarah Chalke's Elliot, he would be in love.
Michael Mosley plays an older student with the bad luck to be Dr. Cox's favorite. In a nod to "House, M.D.," John C. McGinley pins a sheet of paper labeled "# 1" on him. And cocky Cole has no fear because his dad's a large donor to the hospital. He's played by James Franco's little brother Dave (please tell me there are more like you at home).
The new season looks promising. Let's just hope these kids can sing.
I wasn't particularly impressed by the new Scrubs, especially with the new characters, but I think we should give the writers and the cast a chance to develop. Without J.D., the show may stumble, but I'm confident there will be good episodes later on. Review of the episode on my blog.
