'The Vampire Diaries'Two stars
7 p.m., WGN-Channel 9
Somewhere, somehow, somebody has invented a computer program to predict the most effective way to pander to teens. A heroine who looks like a cross between Megan Fox and an anorexic Kardashian? Check. Dead parents fantasy? Check. Easy-to-read book-series tie-in? Check. Slasher deaths during a beer blast in the woods? Check. Tortured romance with hot vampire? Check. Wait, let's just make it a vampire love triangle and be done with it.
The CW knows what it's doing.
And since there's no "Twilight" movie in theaters right now, there's no point in resisting this prefab filler.
The good:
Hunky newcomer Paul Wesley broods like a champ, and he's nicely balanced by devilish prettyboy Ian Somerhalder ("Lost"). Their eyebrows are refreshingly ungroomed.
The bad:
Just because you have the budget for a fog machine doesn't mean you have to use it. (Really? The crow in the cemetery wasn't creepily obvious enough?)
If you are the kind of adolescent who asks questions, this show is not for you. Would a vampire really kill time by going back to high school? And would he really hide his vampire status? At this point, everybody knows that bloodsuckers are babe magnets.
It's just a matter of time before the typical teen girl learns that bad boys are rarely poets at heart, or guarding centuries-old tragic secrets. Bad boys are usually just losers. But for now, the CW is savvy enough to feed girls' dark dreams.
I loved the first episode, I wish i got to a preview for the one coming up. I love true blood, hated the twilight movie because i felt its actors tried way to hard, and even though i know in my mind its fake they could at least make it look believable. I had a question though, if you were going to show kids drinking and hanging out at pool halls why not make the show in a college setting?
I don't understand why everyone things this show will be like Twilight, The Vampire Diaries is it's own book series written back in the early 90's way before Twilight. There are similarities sure, but I think it has it's own thing going on and people should give it a shot and quit comparing the two.
For those of us who've read the books, the fog and crow have a point- so I can understand why they had to include it. I think I LOVE Ian Somerholder as Damon. He's perfect! I wasn't as excited about this show as I thought I would be, but now that I've watched the first episode, I think it's going to be my fav series of this fall!!
I thought the show was really good. I'm twenty and I am a fan of the Twilight saga which was why i originally watched this show. I also hope it doesn't try too hard to be like Twilight and should do it's own thing. The fog machine was a little much though.
I really enjoyed it, as long as you aren't expecting like a 'grown up' show. But im 23 and i enojoy teenie-bopper shows like 90210, Glee, and now Vampire Diaries. It was entertaining, little sexy, and slightly creepy...if some dude i barely knew was standing outside my window in the middle of the night (not okay) but other then that, i really liked it. I hope it doesnt try to hard to be twilight because True Blood does its own thing with the vampires, and does it very well, i think they can too.
this show isss amzainggg!
I don't know what "bad" your talking about Paige, the show is off the chain! I do agree with you about Paul wesley though. He is an awesome actor and he reminds me of James Dean. Definately a future big screen star for sure!
