Over the five seasons of "Lost," loyal viewers have surrendered to the addictive, maddening mystery. Yes, we have questions - What does the smoke monster want? Is Richard wearing eyeliner? - but we gave up hope for answers long ago. There's no way, in the course of just one more season, that the producers could possibly tie up all loose ends, explain their theory of time travel, or even tell us who the good guys are.
They as much as acknowledged it last night, with one character asserting, "We are the good guys." Jeff Fahey's pilot Lapidus responds, "In my experience, the guys who go out of their way to tell you they're the good guys are the bad guys."
Exactly.
And yet last night's finale was hugely satisfying from the get-go: We finally learned who Jacob was. There had been theories that he was a wraith in a shack, or even Jack's dead-yet-talkative father, Christian. Nope! Jacob appears to be a real person. And furthermore, he's played by Mark Pellegrino, a baddie from the serial killer series "Dexter." That can't be good.
The episode showed flashbacks of Jacob showing up at pivotal moments in many of the characters' lives: as young Kate shoplifts a New Kids on the Block lunchbox; at the funeral for young Sawyer's parents; at the moment John Locke is crippled.
We learn that he has an enemy who is looking for a "loophole" to kill him, and that Jacob lives in the foot of the Egyptian statue. But we don't get too attached to him; by the end of the episode, Ben has killed him, apparently because Jacob never paid him enough attention.
Poor Ben.
Even more startlingly, the survivors of the Ajira flight find John Locke's body from the cargo hold of the ship, which means that the guy walking around who looks a lot like John Locke is . . . someone who finally found his loophole. "And you have no idea what I've gone through to be here," he says.
It's hard to say what the episode title, "The Incident," refers to. It could be the detonation of the hydrogen bomb, or burning down the shack, or the slugfest between James and Jack. I like to think that it was the impaling of the obnoxious Dharma member Phil (Patrick Fischler).
Of course, the finale exponentially raises the number of questions we have, but to the producers' credit, they answered a few, too:
Q. What happened to Rose and Bernard? And Vincent?
A. They've been hiding out on the island all this time, filching Dharma food and caring for the dog. "We're retired," they explained.
Q. Why did Kate come back to the island?
A. In an effort to reunite Aaron with his mother Claire.
Q. Why did Hurley come back to the island?
A. Because Jacob - waiting in a taxi outside the prison for him -- told him he was blessed, not cursed, and instructed him to get on the Ajira flight.
Q. How will they resolve the Kate-Sawyer-Juliet love triangle?
A. Buh-bye, Juliet. She's the one who finally detonates the bomb.
Q. What "lies in the shadow of the statue"?
A. Whatever it is, it's in a foreign language. Could someone please e-mail the translation to pwiser@suntimes.com? (Since last night's deadline, I've learned that the line was in Latin: "That which will save all of us.")
Q. Can we at least let Sun and Jin enjoy a hug in the present?
A. No.
Q. What is the purpose of the Dharma Initiative?
A. Last night, the ever-experimenting Radzinsky announced, "I came to this island to change the world." There were no specifics beyond that.
Q. Which direction will next season head? In what era? And what is the ultimate destiny of these characters?
A. The writers may have given us a few clues to mull over for the next nine months before the last season starts. I, for one, feel that the salmon in the first scene must somehow have been symbolic. And the writers left us with this nugget of a clue. "It only ends once," says Jacob. "Anything that happens before that, is just progress."
I beleive that Jacob is good and the evil one is anti-Jacob. I think that the entire series and events that occur on the island were all pre-determined by Jacob, who loves humans. Anti Jacob thinks that humans are not meant to come to the island, i think that all the events planned by jacob are all leading up to the ultimate destruction of the island, jacob knew he was going to be killed by anti jacob because it was all "progress". When he says "they're coming" he means illana and her followers to warn richard and sun that locke is dead and that anti jacob is locke. richard may be with anti jacob which is why the others did not like dharma who must have been brought by jacob, i think jack and sawyer etc. will return to the present all of them. except juliet because there was no flashback with jacob and juliet. maybe it hasn't been shown yet. they all have a destiny and perhaps they're destiny is jacob's "loop hole" to kill anti jacob. Matthew fox says that the beginning will answer the ultimate question of whether the explosion will reset everything, and he says it will be very surprising and will initially be confusing. season 6 will be similar to season 1. i agree that anti jacob has been the dead people on the island but this time with locke is different. it is done. which is why i think richard could be with anti jacob because faraday's mother was the leader of the others and advised by richard. she told jack to bring locke back. but richard could just as easily be on jacob's side it's 50/50. i think anti jacob is christian. It is all a chess game between jacob and antijacob and widmore knew this. he told desmond they were not part of it. and to stay out which brings me to the conclusion that richard and the early others (widemore, faraday's ma) are choosing sides, faraday's ma with anti and widemore with jacob which is why he didn't want locke dead. ben will be on anti jacob's side and has been since being "changed" to quote richard. it's been ben vs widemore. the older others must know the secrets of jacob and anti jacob. Please leave feedback on this theory in progress. i know there are many contradictions but i'm really back and forth on the whole thing. i don't think that jacob planned everything to the exact detail he has tried to influence the pieces of the puzzle to have everything fall into place they way it is supposed to.

The fish in the beginning was not a salmon, but a red herring. Dun, dun, dun...
"
If this is true, red herrings (or kippers) are found in the North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans. And since the directors made such an emphasis of showing the fish, that reinforces the idea that the Island is moving in space.
Ok i believe that in season6 walt will come back. I think this because in the extra 13 videos released juliet told ben they couldnt control "him". The man (walt i think) in room 23. And when they went outside there was dead birds by the window, but how could he kill them there was bars on the window. Which i think indacates the man (walt) has some kind of special powers of some sort????????!!!! ! Tell me what you think!!!!!
I GOT IT!!!
The Black cloud is the Fake John Locke.... Watch the part where Ben falls into the hole, John Locke disappears, the black cloud tells Ben to do as John says... then John Locke appears again... Go back early seasons when Mr. Ecko saw his brother appear in front of him. Mr. Ecko tells him. "you speak to me like you're my brother.. You're not my brother, you're dead".. then the his brother dissapears and the black cloud comes and kills him... The black cloud is the Evil one and Jacob is not. Christian (black cloud) told him to bring them back you need to make the ultimate sacrifice, John killed himself and he is not alive.......
One thing else...
Do you remember that Faraday's Mother (Eloise Hawking) Told Jack to Give Lock one of his father'e possessions (Shoes) in order to get him (Lock) back to Island?
It could reveals how the bad guy (Anti-Jacob) moved from Jack's father's Body to Lock's body... Or some thing like this.
But then another question... Whay Eloise wanted Jack to do that?!! She actually Wanted this to happen? She Wanted to Help Anti-Jacob?!
And about the Last words of Jacob:"They are Coming.." Who the Hell Are Coming:(:O ?
i don't think Juliet is dead. She survived falling down a massive hole, and we never saw the bomb go off, it just falshed white like it did when they were going back and forth through time. I think they were going back to the present and juliet will be alive and she will be with sawyer, and jack and kate will get together again. there not gonna leave the star jack alone with nobody.
i have to say..
great show!
it left me hanging! and i have so many more questions!
but they did answere a few.
when james was holding on to juliet and saying "dont let go"
and she was like "i love you james"..... i started to cry! seriously! and like you dont know that shes NOT DEAD untill the finall moments of the show!
i really want to know why jacob "blessed" richerd. are they connected somehow? maybe... related?
In response to Amy's reply below:
My take on this..is that he needed to "touch" them in some way...almost like "join" with them, or to chose them for something later that will result in them being on the island in some manner.
Kate - givers her a lunch box as a child (through the box by direct contact and he touches her nose)
Jack - gives him an apollo bar in the hospital (Through the Apollo Bar by direct contact)
Locke - gives him his life back after being pushed out the window (He touches his shoulder..almost giving him back his life)
Hurley - gives him Charlies (i presume its his) guitar (Through the case)
Sawyer - gives him a pen (through the pen by direct contact))
Sayid - He kind of gives him his life too as he stops him corssing the road so he doesn't get run over (by touching him)
Sun and Jin - He gives them his "blessing" when they get married (he touches both their shoulders at the same time when blessing them)
As always, this season leaves my family and I ready to rewatch everything from the very first episode up to this point. Always find missing clues that we wouldn't have picked up on before. Guess it's time to get started!

I wonder if the smoke monster did something to Ben when he healed him as a child to prepare Ben to kill Jacob. Richard knew something would be different with Ben.
Also, remember when Alex arrived at the island and her 3 male friends went inside the temple after the black smoke. Alex later killed her friend because she said he was not who he said he was(she then took shots at Jin).
How does Richard fit into this. He appears to be of the same realm as Jacob and the other dude since they never age. Did Richard know what was going on after he left the fake Locke to give first aid to the real Locke in the time travel sequence?
I put a lot of stock in what Miles said, How do you guys know the bomb will prevent the plane crash and not cause it?
What's in Hurly's guitar case? What happened to Hurly's bald friend who told Hurly he was still in a mental inst in the first season? That episode has never been answered too.
What happened to the polar bears we saw in the first season?
Just some food for thought...I love Lost and can't wait until next season.
Maybe, the 'Others' rule that you can't kill (die) on the island is because Anti-Jacob can then take your form. (body) This is why Juliet was dealt with so harshly, why Amy demanded the body of Paul be brought back and Richard demanded the bodies of his men that Sawyer killed. The women who have been pregnant can't survive because beasty-guy is trying to possess the babies once I guess they are ripe for possessing. (Who wants to be a wormy fetus. So he tries in the third trimester.)
Moment that must happen in season 6. The original recording of the numbers. Hurley's voice is on the recording.
Is dead really dead?
A thought: I know John Locke is technically dead, and that Jacob's frienemy is inhabiting his body, complete with all of his memories, but is it possible that b/c Locke had such a strong connection to the island that somehow the island managed to keep his spirit close by and ready to re inhabit his body when Jacob's nemesis moves out? Or is this just really wishful thinking on my part? I really really really do not want Locke (a major TV crush of mine!) to have met his end the way he did!
Great show.
Was there was a real explosion? if so how did the Swan (and the rest of the island) survive to "modern" times - and what destroyed the statue (maybe the the same event that moved the Black Rock ship to the center of the island)?
One thing that keeps bugging me is the 2 skeletons in the cave with the black and white stones (representing good and evil). They are in season 1 show when the Losties first crash. I thought they were Jack and Kate, then Kate and Sawyer now Rose and Bernard? (I think they were male and female) - indicating someone stays on the island somehow until they die (probably knowing that they will be found)
It all seems to be moving towards a good vs evil - fate vs conscious choice ending which is probably the only way the writers could make it all work in the end.
Must be fun being a writer on the show
The battle between Jacob and This "new evil character" is the eternal batle between Good and Evil, Light and Darkness, just like the backgamon game (remember the first season). So, what if the losties are just pieces in this batle?. What about the Taweret statue where jacob lives? Taweret was the pregnancy goddess in egipcian myth, and somewhere in time she was the concubine of Set, Osiris's evil brother (first tip, Jacob's lives inside Taweret, so we can asume they are concubines). Set Killed his brother Osiris, who become the new ruller of the dead's kingdom (that's why many dead characters can walk around the island), this kingdom it's protected by cerbero, or "cerb", like they calls the smoke sometimes. So, Set is the bad guy, like Lapuddus sayid, "the ones who told "we're the goods" always are the bad guys", so what if Jacob isn't the light, what if Jacob it's the evil one? So...we need to find out who is Horus, the Osiris's Son who promised vengance for his father's dead. And...a name came into mi mind...Horus...sounds like Horace...Horace Goodspeed, right? Besides, he is the one who builded the famous Jacob's cabin, remember? What if, Ben have been manipulated by the smoke, since he was a child, to do this, to kill Jacob, to kill Set. Nothing it's what it seems in this serie, so, don't trust in your eyes, or what you saw in the last chapter, and believe in what you think, that's the diference between a man of science, and a man of faith. :)
There is most definitely something to the Jacob/Esau; Good/evil angle. And did anyone notice Jacob made a comment about creating a "thread." Was this all an experiment to Jacob to prove man would choose correctly? Also, I think Jacob is good because even though Sayid's wife was killed (If it was her time to go, maybe he knew it was not preventable) he saved Sayid from getting hit also. And he always said kind things when he appeared in the flashbacks and told Locke he was sorry he had to go through this. He seems to be almost a deity who made this plan for a purpose?????
I kept looking at Ilianna thinking she looked familiar - she resembles Naomi quite a bit, maybe sisters?? Also did anyone notice that when Jacob visited the Kate/Sawyer/Hugo in the past he 'touched' them subtly? I wonder if that has to do with anything...
Faye,
Who are you referring to when you say Jeremy? Earlier posts on here suggested that the Anti-Jacob (dark haired guy looking for a loophole to kill Jacob) is Jeremy, which isn't the case. Jeremy was just a name/identity given to Locke by Whidmore when Locke was instructed to leave the Island. So, to your question... Jeremy IS the original Locke, but it was just a temporary alias.
If by Jeremy, you mean Jacob's enemy then the answer is that we really don't know the connection between him and the real Locke. All we know is this:
-Locke has been dead since Ben killed him.
-When the Ajira flight crash-landed on the Island, it can be assumed that Jacob's enemy has been walking around as Locke.
Some very reasonable theories in this post suggest that the smoke monster/Christian Shepherd/Fake Locke/Possibly other "returned Losties" have been Jacob's enemy. He can seemingly "become" people that have died.
Stacey,
If you read further down, Crispee has already mentioned that theory.
well, i really enjoy watching Lost but i am soooooo confused right now! I think that the season finale episode, confused me even more! there are so many questions to be answered, like what's going on with Jeremy and Locke. Can someone explain to me the connection those two can have?
I had a flash of realization today. Has anyone else considered the idea that the "Jacob" living in the cabin in season 3/4 (when we got the flash of him saying "Help Me!") was really this non-Locke character/guy in black? Ilana said that Jacob hadn't been there for a while and the presence was a spirit of sorts.
It appears as if he somehow lost his own body but can maybe impersonate people on the island after they've died (i.e. Christian, Alex, etc) - these incarnations usually resulted in events/actions that ultimately led to the non-Locke's success in reincarnating as Locke. Still not sure if Hurley's interaction with Charlie and Libby and such were the non-Locke character, since they were typically positive interactions.
Either way, it seems pretty clear that Jacob represents a faith in free will and choice, trusting that people are ultimately good and will do the right thing (with occasional guidance), while the non-Locke character is wily and manipulative to get what he wants and prove that people are motivated by self-interest and petty emotions. Also, Ben's desire to interact with Jacob, following blindly even though he had no proof of his existence, seems VERY much like the "blind faith" religious followers are expected to have in God/Allah/[Insert name here], as well as Jacob's response "what about you?" (because God doesn't show himself to people just because they want him to). Just a thought...
Can't wait until next season!!!!
I think both of them are bad(Jacob and smoke Monster). For people to think there is good makes Evil so much better. You all have good coments so I will go along with all your views.I guess we have to wait but hope it won't end with a flop. But you all know some will love it and some will trash as usual.
thats all i can think for now, altho its also strange to note that juliet is the only one who got a flashback without jacob in it, perhaps reflecting her true death or her unimportance in jacobs eyes compared to the rest, even tho it seems shes the one that set off the bomb and set the events of season 6 in motion.
also ive heard claire is coming back as a main character in season 6 (which is awesome), so perhaps we'll learn from her what exactly is going on with the island, jacob, and jacobs enemy/the monster? seeing as she was gone for so long off in the jungle with her "father" (who is prolly the smoke monster and maybe jacobs enemy too) in "jacobs cabin" (i find it weird that christian shepherd aka jacobs enemy would be in the cabin and never jacob since jacob really lives in the statue, so maybe it was never jacobs cabin after all since when locke "saw" jacob it was some creepy old man not the young man we saw in the finale. but then how did that piece of jacobs tapestry get in the cabin? i dont know. sorry, im rambling)
secondly i wanted to note a strange thign that was occuring to me during all of the Jacob scenes. its definitely more probable that he was only appearing to the Losties to make them come (or come back) to the island, but in a way it seems almost that he was shaping their very characters, and sometimes in a bad way. so lets see...
kate: altho he tells her not to steal, he lets her off the hook and protecting her from punishment over the crime she commited, possibly making her into a later criminal which brings her to the island.
sawyer: gives a pen to young james so that he can continue to write the letter to the conman, which turns sawyer into he who is also.
sayid: to me it seemed that he distracted sayid so that he wouldnt be able to save nadia, which makes him the darker person that he is aka bens hitman, which then leads him to be captured by ilana and taken to the island again. (which is starnge to note: since jacob told ilana to go to the island, did she take sayid on purpose?)
a few thoughts on the episode, especially on Jacob and his enemy..
first of all if anyone recalls when Ben is going to be judged and falls down into the lower part of the temple: fake-Locke leaves to "get some rope" once he falls, and after that is when the smoke monster / Alex appears to Ben. this is to further back up the theory presented by other commenters that the man who took Locke's body is actually the smoke monster itself.
also to back this up, when Ben is down there he sees some drawings on the wall just above where the monster comes out of. this drawing is a picture of the smoke monster facing the egyptian figure of the giant statue. this would back up the whole idea of the monster being the man who took Lockes body and the giant statue being the home of, and in a way representing, Jacob.
how do we know that that was jacob interacting with our pre-losties? could have been the anti-jacob. "...someone who finally found his loophole. "And you have no idea what I've gone through to be here..."
is jacob the good or bad "god"?
is anti-jacob really the good guy?
did the bomb just make a nice quick flash and nothing more?
nine months? a pregnant pause?
I believe the latin response for "What lies at the shadow of the statue?" is "That by which we serve the almighty." This probably confirms that the story is based on Jacob and Esaus, twin which represent yin and yang, good and evil. They are on this island to watch over man, and to test the world. One cannot kill the other, but they can test the free will of man and have a human attempt to kill the other. Richard is witness to it all, sort of like Ponchus Pilate. Or at least that's my guess.
Did anyone else pick up on the fact that Jacob had on a white shirt ,as if to show he is a good guy and the man that some of you are refering to as Jeremy had on a black shirt ? Good & evil?
EXACTLY!
OH! Another thing to add is a scene in one of these seasons' episodes where Ben goes under the temple and encounters his "dead daughter". A couple facts support the idea that Anti-Jacob (loophole guy) has been manipulating the main characters while taking on the form of the dead.
1.) The "ghost Alex" tells Ben to do whatever Locke says. Is this "ghost Alex" just Anti-Jacob (loophole guy) in another dead person's form? And is his intent to manipulate Ben into blindly following Locke, who is actually Anti-Jacob.
Okay, just a heads up...Whidmore gave Locke the Bentham name due to the likeness of the English Philosophers name.We haven't been given Jacob's enemies name. But according to religous enthusiasts its the whole Jacob and Enau story.
Edit to my original post:
Ok scratch the "loophole guy" being named Jeremy. But the theory stays.
What a way to end the season!
This may have been mentioned somewhere, but my personal theory is that the guy looking for the "loophole" (Jeremy?) has been the one moving/influencing/manipulating the main characters this whole time to meet his endgame: killing Jacob. And I believe he has been doing this in different forms but mostly as Christian (Jack's dad).
Clues:
*Something to note is that we know Jeremy can "take on" different forms... however way he does it. It seems, however, that he is limited to taking on the forms of only the dead. (Maybe why Hurley thinks he can see/have conversations with dead people?)
1.) Jeremy (as Locke) says in the end: "You have no idea what I've been through to get here." (quotes are not exact)
- From season 1, Christian (seemingly as a ghost) has been showing up and "haunting" different characters, usually to get them to "do" something. One significant event to note here is when he (As Christian) told John he had to "die" to get everyone back on the Island. Was his intent to get John to die so that he could "take on" his form?
2.) Alannah (not sure how her name is spelled) finds the old shack where Jacob was originally believed to be.
- From the season finale we know that Alnnah is loyal to Jacob.
- She says when she finds the shack, (again quotes are not exact). "Jacob hasn't been here in a long time... someone else has been using it." We have seen Christian in this shack many times, so if Jacob hasn't been in there in a while Christian (who has been there several times) cannot be Jacob (as many others believe). This further supports that Jeremy has been using the shack in Christian's form.
More to come... I definitely need to rewatch some of the seasons to get all this tied together.
Not to be too critical, but I think some of you have confused a lot of things.
First, Jeremy Bentham and John Locke were the exact same people. Charles Whidmore gave Locke the fake passport with that name so he could move around undetected while he looked for the Losties.
Second, Penny and Des' son Charley could be Charley that died, but it's HIGHLY unlikely. Dead is dead. The producers drove home that point with Locke. Charley was born in the late 70's-early 80's while Penny and Des' Charley was born sometime between 2004 and 2007.
Also, I took the man that Jacob was speaking to in the beginning to be Esau, based on the Jacob and Esau from the Bible. He did not become Locke until AFTER Ajira 316 crashed on the island with Locke's dead body on board, then he took his form, much like he has done with Eko's brother, Jack's father and others.
That fish was no salmon but a red herring! Both figuratively and literally.
Um...Jeremy Bentham theory...no.
Jeremy Bentham was just a pseudonym Locke took when he turned the wheel and left the island. Widmore set him up with that identity, since he couldn't go around as "John Locke" who died on Oceanic 815.
Jacob's adversary, from the opening scene, didn't assume Locke's body until the Oceanic 6 returned on Ajira 316 with Locke's body.
p.s. "Jacob took the life form of Chris." Um...who is Chris?? There is no Chris. lol.
The fish in the beginning was not a salmon, but a red herring. Dun, dun, dun...
Thanks! -- that's the only possible explanation.
I do have questions of my own...
I know that the ship that was approaching when Jacob was sitting eating fish is the "black rock" but how was it dragged all the way into the island if there was no magnetic pull?
The show have abandon the story of the guy with the eye-patch that seems immortal.
I think on season 1 or 2 Sun killed a lady that said "I know who you are (called her by her first and last name), you're a good person".. How can this be answered if Sun came back to the island, join the "others" in present time, not past.
Desmond & Penny's son is named "Charley"... which in my mind is the same grown Musician Charley??
Since John Locke Died, and Jeremy took his life form, does that mean the Jacob took the life form of Chris?
MOST IMPORTANT:::
There was a scene in this season where they were flashing through time, and at one point Sawyer, Juliette, Miles & Daniel were on a boat and someone started shooting them... what was that about?? were did they flash forward to the future future... who were trying to kill them? where these the people that Jacob said were coming?? :-)
@Felix - Jeremy Bentham! kudos on diggin that one up... haven't seen anyone bring that up yet.
Why does everyone think that Juliet won't come back? Because she was closest to the bomb? I don't think anyone would survive that flash . . . and Jack wanting to re-write history so he could be with Kate? Ugh. But I loved seeing Jack get all Bauer on the screen with the gunplay. Such an intelligent drama that has every season finale resort to gunfights
I've watched all five seasons of "Lost" and I've enjoyed every minute of the series. I love the characters. Sad the season finale is here already.
If my memory serves me well, at the end of season 3 or beginning of season 4 Jack and Kate a confrontation when Jack was all scruffy, wanting to get back to the island. Kate said something down the lines "don't you ever mention his name.. all he put us through"... he's not a friend or an enemy.. Jack doesn't call him John Locke, but Jeremy in that flash.. Jacob's Enemy is Jeremy Benthlam in Locke's body. Jeremy was looking for that loophole to kill Jacob. Now the question is was the flash that jack and kate had a flash back or a flash forward forward?? That's my two cents.
(Paige here: OH! Jeremy Bentham! Yes, that makes sense, I think... It was weird they'd introduce some character in the first scene that they never even name. I will sleep better tonight, thank you!)
