Last night's "American Idol" was 98 percent filler and 2 percent predictable. Those of us bored with all the hometown footage were almost rooting for Adam Lambert to be voted off, just for a thrill. But the flamboyant front-runner made it into the final two at the last minute. And even Katy Perry, singing her latest, "Waking Up in Vegas," threw Adam her support - she had his name written across the back of her Elvis-esque cape.
Instead, Danny Gokey - who had never before been in the bottom three - was voted off after his touching "You Are So Beautiful To Me" left the judges breathless. He'll be returning to Milwaukee, along with countless pairs of glasses and his trademark crouch (which one online critic described as "walking around the woods looking for morels").
Kris Allen will face off against Adam in the finale, and it just might be a close one. Ryan Seacrest reported that 88 million votes were cast for the results show - but just over one million votes separated the top two singers. Kris's version of Kanye West's "Heartless" just may have turned voters around. Randy Jackson, at least, considered it better than the original.
