'Dancing' ballroom up for grabs

Yikes! What a night!
First Melissa Roycroft is out with a hairline fracture of her ribs. OUCH!
Here's the video:

Then, Ty Murray gets his first-ever spray-on tan! Cute!
Then, Len "Mr. Crankypants" Goodman tells Ty it's time the cowboy went home! BOOOO!

It was night of ups and downs, as the scores were as wild as Carrie Ann Inaba's whooping cheers. Gilles and Cheryl scored a solid 27 for their spirited Lindy Hop, though I thought it wasn't all that. Lil Kim and Derek turned in a stunning paso doble that left them at the top of the leader board for the night with a 28. Chuck and Julianne were very polished throughout their cha cha, but it only earned a 26 from the judges, as Bruno couldn't get past Chuck's "wooden arms." Shawn and Mark had some of the night's nuttiest round of scores, earning a 10 from Carrie Ann, and 8 from Len and a 9 from Bruno for a samba that to me looked really flat-footed (Shawn) and way over-danced (Mark). I thought Ty and Chelsie's salsa was just marvy. The spray-on tan seemed to put a little sprightliness in Ty's footwork and again, their scores were nutty: a 9 from Carrie Ann, a 7 from Len (who was roundly BOO'd with is very rude remark about Ty "hitting the trail") and an 8 from Bruno.

Were these judges watching the same routines? Never has the scoring been so all over the place. (Melissa and Tony earned a 21 from the judges who watched their final rehearsal video due to Melissa's absence from the ballroom tonight).

Then there was the team dancing: Team Mambo vs Team Tango.
Mambo was made up of Tony, Shawn, Mark, Julianne, Chuck, Lacey Schwimmer (filling in for Melissa, though not being judged; Melissa gets the team score of 25). It was a cheeky dance indeed, right down to the "men in white tights" routine at the very end. Didn't Justin Timberlake already wow the world with THAT bit on "SNL"? The judges rightfully called it gimmicky, fun and distracting.

On the other hand, the Tango team (Gilles, Derek, Lil Kim, Cheryl, Chelsie and Ty) was hot, hot, hot, thanks in great measure to Ty's new tan (hee-hee) and some incredibly synchronized footwork that just left me saying WOOOOOOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Lil Kim's misstep and Gilles' less-than spectacular footwork (we've seen it all before, Gilles!! Come on, don't go lazy at this stage of the game!) didn't matter in the end. The team earned a 29 for their efforts.

At this point, it's anyone's game. And if Melissa's fan base voted like crazy tonight, she should be back, leaving the door open for Ty to ride off into the sunset. (Although... Shawn is also showing signs of losing her initial spark; this is getting very interesting).

This is one of the most difficult seasons to call in the history of this show.
Tuesday's prediction: Barring a lack of Melissa viewer votes, Ty will probably be gone.

Lil Kim and Derek scored a 28, not a 29.
