Jet Blue today announced it's selling open seats on U.S. flights for $10 each way in celebration of its 10 year anniversary. (You have to fly May 11 & 12.)

One editor at the paper found a $20 roundtrip to New York City and was tempted. By the time we checked back an hour later, it was gone. Ditto for New Orleans. Ditto for San Francisco and Boston.

Did any of you last-minute spontaneous types find a fare and book it? I'd love to hear from you if you did.

Stuck in Spain

I was one of those travelers counting my blessings last month that I didn't have a trip to Europe scheduled during the Icelandic volcano eruption.

Well, my luck just ran out. I'm sitting in Spain rather than on the Iberia plane that was supposed to be flying me back to Chicago. Nearly 20 airports in northern Spain have closed today because of the ash cloud. I got the good news when I showed up at the Santiago de Compostela airport at 5:30 a.m. this morning, and saw the word "cancelado" next to my Madrid flight. Last time I took Spanish was in junior high, but I got the message loud and clear.

I'm rolling the dice and taking an overnight train from Santiago to Madrid, in hopes of hopping on tomorrow's Madrid-Chicago flight. Don't know if that's realistic or ridiculous, but it's the only option I have.

This volcano ash problem doesn't appear to be going away anytime soon. I wonder what that means for European travel this summer.

I know this is a shot in the dark, but hey, maybe St. James will work a miracle for me.

I'm in Santiago de Compostela right now (Thursday, May 6), and spent the day doing a tiny portion of the famous walk and visiting the beautiful cathedral.

I'd love to talk to some pilgrims from the U.S. who are in town. If anyone fits the bill and happens to read this and would be available to meet me briefly around the cathedral tomorrow (Friday, May 7), let me know. Would love to hear your story.

Right now, I'm gonna go get me some tapas....
