Packing Illinois' parks Nov. 1

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Outdoor lovers know by now that Gov. Blagojevich plans to close 11 state parks Nov. 30. He says there isn't enough money in the budget to keep them open.

A group called POP Illinois (Pack Our Parks) is encouraging all residents to head to their closest state park on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. to show their objection to the guv's plan.

"There need be no planned activities, no special rallies; we just want people to go to their local state parks, with 10-11 a.m. as a primte time for maximum attendance for media exposure," a POP letter dated Oct. 20 reads.

Blago's lieutenant governor, Pat Quinn, isn't too happy with his boss's plan, either. He's posted an online petition, encouraging people to voice their opposition.

Here's a list of the 11 parks on the chopping block:

Illini State Park in Marseilles
Channahon Parkway State Park in Channahon
Castle Rock State Park in Oregon
Lowden State Park in Oregon
Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park in Sheffield
Gebhard Woods State Park in Morris
Hidden Springs State Forest in Strasburg
Kickapoo State Park in Oakwood
Moraine State Park in Leroy
Weldon Springs State Park in Clinton
Wolf Creek State Park in Windsor
