How airlines fare with lost luggage

Among the many things tracked by our federal government: Reports of lost luggage.

If you fly Atlantic Southeast, watch out: this airline averaged 17.37 complaints of mishandled bags for every 1,000 passengers. That's more than five times the rate of bungled bag reports for Hawaiian airlines. JetBlue was on the low side, too, with 4.09 reports of mishandled bags for every 1,000 customers.

These are 2006 Department of Transportation stats that were part of an excellent article on lost luggage by USA Today reporter Roger Yu. The article also includes some helpful hints on preventing your luggage from getting lost in the first place.

More free gas: Illinois

Illinois tourism folks want to lessen your pain at the pump: You can get a $25 Shell gift card when you book a 3-day getaway, and better yet, you could win a year's worth of gas by submitting a 2-3 minute video of your Illinois escape.

To qualify for the gas promotion, you have to book your trip on the Illinois Board of Tourism's web site.

Wondering what there is to see in our fine state? The web site has plenty of suggestions....

Happy travels!

Traverse City offers free gas - and more

So this Lake Michigan resort area is offering $25 Speedway gas cards to visitors who book at least three nights in a participating hotel in May and June (Memorial Day weekend excluded). But the marketing magicians have sweetened the pot some...

The "Pump up Your Summer: Drive for 25" promotion also includes a few extras, like a 25 percent discount on food and drinks at The Bowery, a roll of free quarters at the Turtle Creek or Leelanau Sands casinos, and well over 25 coupons for discounts at shops in downtown Traverse City and the nearby outlet mall.

Call (800) 714-0051 for details, and remember: if you want the free gas, you have to book your hotel through this number.

Indy tidbits

Want to compete on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway but not in a car?

Grab your golf bags and check out the $99 Stay & Play package at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course and Brickyard Crossing Inn, which is just a few feet from the course’s first tee. Several of the course's holes are located on the infield of the famed speedway.

The package gets you a round of golf and overnight accommodations at the hotel for $99 per person, based on double occupancy. Greens fees for 18 holes of golf at Brickyard Crossing are normally $90.

Go to brickyardcrossing.com or call (317) 241-2500.

A few places worth visiting for a some good grub:

Shapiro's Delicatessen, 808 S. Meridian St. (317) 631-3958.
New York City prices don't make the lines any shorter at this popular deli, opened by Louis and Rebecca Shapiro in 1905 as a small grocery store. Today it's a full-service kosher-style deli where you can buy smoked fish and cold cuts by the pound or eat breakfast, lunch or an early dinner in the brightly lit cafeteria. The Reuben is a must.

Best beer garden in town is the Rathskeller, 401 E. Michigan St. (317) 636-0396.
It's like Oktoberfest during warm summer nights in the outdoor beergarden at this sprawling restaurant, which claims to be the oldest eatery in Indy. It's done up inside like a massive beer hall, dishing up gemutlich German food. Try the warm pretzels and mustard and wash it down with one of the many beers on tap.
