Sen. Mark Kirk only Republican to vote for Senate assault weapon ban

WASHINGTON--A string of gun-control measures failed in the Senate on Wednesday--including an amendment to ban assault weapons championed by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) was the only Republican to vote to advance the ban. The assault weapon ban failed to reach the needed 60-vote threshold with 40 yes votes and 60 no votes. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) voted to reinstate the ban, which expired after being in place between 1994 and 2004.
