WASHINGTON--Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel was in New York on Monday--making a trip on the taxpayers tab that was not disclosed on his public schedule. The New York trip was disclosed by Fox Business Network's Charlie Gasparino.
This is the second trip --on city business--in recent weeks that Emanuel has chosen not to disclose. This dilutes his argument that is running a transparent administration. Emanuel is practicing selective transparency--what he wants when he wants it.
After asking City Hall about the Fox report, spokesman Tarrah Cooper said in a statement, "Yesterday the Mayor was in New York for a series of meetings with businesses that are interested in growing and expanding in Chicago."
While Fox Business News speculated Emanuel was there on Obama campaign business--Emanuel is a co-chair of the campaign and is doing fund-raising--Cooper said Emanuel "was not there on behalf of or affiliated with the President."
Last month, I disclosed that Emanuel was in Washington to hold meetings with Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.I was told by City Hall that the May NATO/G-8 meetings in Chicago were on his agenda on this trip."
