Michelle Obama, Malia, Sasha on vacation: Visited Mount Rushmore

WASHINGTON--First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha, on a Spring Break vacation, Wednesday visited the Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota and touched down in Las Vegas after that. On Friday Mrs. Obama hits San Francisco for a fund-raiser to benefit the Obama re-election drive.

Keeping track of Mrs. Obama on this West Coast swing happens through a mix of guidance from the White House and--here is the reality--local news reports from where they are vacationing, since the visits are private, according to the White House. Mrs. Obama's whereabouts, however, do become public because you cannot land a big U.S. government jet and travel around in a 10-car motorcade--as they did in South Dakota--and not get noticed by local residents and reporters.

The Obama daughters are on vacation from their Sidwell Friends school until Monday. Malia, 13, was in Mexico--in Oaxaca, an arts and craft center, know for rugs, wood carvings and black and green pottery--on a school trip. The White House put out a rare statement that she was safe after an earthquake hit the area.

Over the Presidents Day weekend in February, Mrs. Obama took her girls skiing in Colorado.

Regarding Mount Rushmore: The late night gags could be about the Obama women checking out a place for a fifth president to be carved on the mountain. President Barack Obama got some grief from his perma-critics after he told CBS' Sixty Minutes earlier in the year, "I would put our legislative and foreign policy accomplishments in our first two years against any president -- with the possible exceptions of Johnson, F.D.R., and Lincoln -- just in terms of what we've gotten done in modern history."

Mrs. Obama and daughters at Mount Rushmore: Rapid City, SD Journal report HERE. At Las Vegas, The ABC News report is HERE. The Obamafoodorama story is HERE.

From the Rapid City Journal: After visiting Mount Rushmore, "Then they showed a bit of a sweet tooth by stopping at the Turtle Town old-fashioned fudge and ice-cream shop in Keystone, where manager Deb Splinter served them ice cream and other treats.

".....The Obamas arrived at the shop at about 3:45 p.m., following a visit to Mount Rushmore that restricted access to parts of the memorial and required visitors during that period to go through security checkpoint where one officer wore a U.S. Secret Service shirt. The Obamas had flown into Ellsworth Air Force Base earlier in the day and rode in a gray Suburban that was part of a motorcade of about 10 vehicles."

UPCOMING GUIDANCE FOR FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA

On Saturday, March 31st at 10:00 AM PT, as part of her Joining Forces initiative to honor, recognize and serve military families, First Lady Michelle Obama will travel to Coast Guard Island in Alameda, California, to participate in the commissioning ceremony of the Coast Guard Cutter Stratton, placing it in active service to perform homeland security and national defense duties. Mrs. Obama, a sponsor of the Cutter Stratton, helped christen the ship in Pascagoula, Mississippi, in 2010 by breaking a champagne bottle over the bow. This tradition dates back hundreds of years and marks the formal naming of a ship. Following the christening, Cutter Stratton underwent extensive tests and sea trials. The commissioning ceremony in Alameda will signify Cutter Stratton's formal introduction into the active Coast Guard fleet. As the ship's sponsor, the First Lady will ceremonially give the order to bring the ship to life, at which time the crew will board the Stratton with much fanfare.

The Coast Guard ship is named after Captain Dorothy Stratton, the director of the Coast Guard Women's Reserve during World War II where she oversaw 10,000 enlisted women and 1,000 commissioned officers. Mrs. Obama will also visit with a group of World War II Coast Guard women veterans who served with Captain Dorothy Stratton.

Also on Saturday, March 31st, First Lady Michelle Obama will travel to Los Angeles for Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards where she will present The Big Help Award to Taylor Swift for her work with tornado and flood survivors. As part of her initiative to solve the problem of childhood obesity, the First Lady's Let's Move! initiative and Nickelodeon have teamed up to get kids moving by turning off the television for three hours during Nickelodeon's Worldwide Day of Play. As part of her Joining Forces initiative to recognize, honor and serve military families, Mrs. Obama joined the cast of Nickelodeon's hit series iCarly in the episode, "iMeet The First Lady." The show's lead character, Carly Shay is the daughter of an Air Force Colonel currently serving overseas. On Friday, March 30th at 5:30 PM PT Mrs. Obama will deliver remarks at a Democratic National Committee Event in San Francisco covered by a print pooler.
