Poland Ambassador to U.S. Kupiecki in Chicago: Rahm, Quinn meetings; Cubs pitch Saturday

Poland's ambassador to the U.S. Robert Kupiecki is in Chicago, meeting with Gov. Pat Quinn, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Rep. Bob Dold (R-Ill.), Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.)--and tossing out the first pitch Saturday at the Cubs game.

Kupiecki arrived in Chicago on Thursday, said the Polish Embassy spokesman, Artur P. Orkisz, a former Chicagoan.

"Our two countries share common values and have overlapping interests and shared goals. I look forward to conveying this message to Governor Quinn and to Members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation," Kupiecki said in a statement. "I am also pleased to be able to congratulate Mayor Emanuel on becoming the 55th Mayor of the great city of Chicago -- the Mayor has been a good friend and ally to Poland going back to his days in the U.S. Congress. I look forward to discussing ways Chicago can continue expanding initiatives like the sister city program that Warsaw and Chicago have shared since 1960 and to continued cooperation between Chicago and Poland."

On August 19, Ambassador Kupiecki will meet with young Polish-American professionals at the Polish Consulate in Chicago.

On August 20, the Ambassador will be the guest of the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, where he will throw out the first pitch at the Friendly Confines.

"I am delighted to witness America's favorite pastime in one of its most historic ball parks, and to throw out my first pitch ever as the Cubs face off against their historic arch-rival, the St. Louis Cardinals," the Ambassador said. "I look forward to rooting for the Cubs and a lively game. I would like to sincerely thank the Ricketts Family and the Chicago Cubs for their kind invitation."

Congressman Mike Quigley of Chicago's 5th District -- which includes Wrigley Field as well as one of the largest Polish-American communities in the U.S. -- will accompany the Ambassador to Wrigley Field.

Ambassador Kupiecki will visit Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism in Evanston on Thursday, August 18 to promote a journalism contest on independence in Belarus for current students and recent graduates sponsored by the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the Embassy.
