Joins candidate in a flurry of Thanksgiving week campaigning

(Chicago) Former Chicago Public Schools chief and leading national education reformer Paul Vallas endorsed Gery Chico for mayor of Chicago today in front of Orozco Elementary, a school built under their leadership at CPS during the 1990s. Vallas said that bar none, Chico is the best person for the job.

"Nobody is better equipped to lead this city to new heights than Gery Chico," Vallas said. "Gery's resume is built for the job of mayor. From ushering in urban school reform for our children to improving the safety of our citizens, Gery is a guy who gets things done."

Vallas joined Chico for a day of campaigning at stops that included a "Neighborhood Chambers of Commerce Summit" at Athena Restaurant in Greektown, where community chamber leaders gathered to discuss ways to help neighborhood businesses grow in Chicago. Throughout the day, Vallas pointed to Chico's strong knowledge of city issues and track record of results improving the city, like putting more than 1,000 extra cops on the streets.

"Gery has led Chicago to a better place before and as mayor, he'll do it again," Vallas said.

Chico and Vallas led the turnaround of CPS from the "worst in the nation" according to the then-U.S. Secretary of Education, to a national reform model, according to President Bill Clinton. With Chico and Vallas at the helm, CPS saw six years of increased student test scores, balanced budgets, labor peace, the end of social promotion, more schools built and rebuilt than ever before in history, mandatory summer and after school programs, and the expansion of charter and magnet schools.

Vallas also served alongside Chico at the mayor's office as Budget Director and mayoral chief-of-staff, respectively. As Superintendent of the Recovery School District of Louisiana, Vallas is currently leading the rebuilding of its school system in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
