Obama on Mayor Daley not seeking re-election. UPDATE. Obama, Daley chat

Update...
President Obama spoke with Mayor Daley on the phone around 5:45 p.m. eastern time. end update.

President Obama never came up through Mayor Daley's City Hall, though Senor Advisors David Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett worked for Daley and Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel was a Daley appointee--who started his political career as a Daley fund-raiser. First Lady Michelle Obama worked in Daley's City Hall between 1991 and 1993. Obama issued a short statement on Daley's surprise announcement today that he will not seek a seventh term:

"No mayor in America has loved a city more or served a community with greater passion than Rich Daley. He helped build Chicago's image as a world class city, and leaves a legacy of progress that will be appreciated for generations to come."

THANK GOD HE WILL LEAVE THE MAYORS OFFICE!!!!!!!

I am so glad that he is not seeking re-election. (PEACE) two fingers... YOU will not be missed. I just hope that the person that intends on running for mayor is serious about our childrens health, education, job security for our teachers and not just in it to make their own pockets fatter.

Thank you Mayor Daley! You are quite simply the greatest Mayor, period.

be careful what you ask for - the next crook might be worse. Is that actually possible? Only time will tell...

Please stop blaming the city and the police for the crime. It starts in the home. Deadbeat parents need to wake up and take responsiblity for their undisciplined children!!!!!

AFTER OBAMA LEAVE OFFICE HE NEEDS TO COME BACK TO CHICAGO AND FINISH WHAT DALEY HAS DONE,HE WOULD BE PERFECT AND COULD USE THAT AS HIS RETIREMENT JOB RIGHT IN HIS HOME TOWN

Chicago without da Mayor? Wish the man well and give him a "Thank You" for all he's done for Chicago. Now you guys may have a Mayor like other city's.

How about the job that guy did in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina? How about that guy? You want a mayor like him?
You may get him.

Coming from Chicago I knew what a great Mayor was and after 10 years in the South I know what lame, useless Mayors are. Sure you got problems, ghost employees, scandals and such - It's Chicago - the fix is in. Even where they ain't got the fix in they got ghost employees and fraud and "some" scandal. Not on a level with Chicago but they got the same problems.
But more problems than you could imagine without a solid leader. Da' Mayor may not of been slick, didn't always sound the best in front of the mic but he led. His leadership touched every corner of the city and you knew when things looked bad the end wasn't just around the corner. You may not have liked him but you knew life would continue, not like some other city's. When the mayor of some city's speak you evacuate and fast, because the guy whose mayor hasn't a clue what to do.
Daley always looked like he was in charge. He knew how to get things done, not everybody is a "can-do guy".
Your next Mayor may look good on TV and sound like a professional, but will he get it done?
Now you gotta live without that great leader.
Now you gotta live like everybody else.
