WASHINGTON--In announcing her retirement on Monday, White House reporting legend Helen Thomas, 89, said "I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians.

"They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that pace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon."

Thomas turns 90 on Aug. 4.

UPDATE TUESDAY, JUNE 8 - 12:38 p.m. Chicago time
Last month, Thomas spoke at a fund-raiser for Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) in Chicago and this blog covered the event.

In the wake of the controversy, Schakowsky issued this statement:

Schakowsky: "I was appalled at Helen Thomas' statement that Jews should leave Israel and "go home" to Germany, Poland, America and elsewhere. Her comment was inappropriate and highly offensive. Helen Thomas has had a long and pioneering career - one that has been uplifting for women in journalism. But that in no way excuses such an insensitive and reprehensible remark."

WASHINGTON - Helen Thomas announced Monday that she is retiring,
effective immediately.

Her decision came after her controversial comments about Israel
and the Palestinians were captured on videotape and widely
disseminated on the Internet.

Thomas later issued a statement: "I deeply regret my comments I
made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians. They do
not reflect my heart-felt belief that pace will come to the Middle
East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect
and tolerance. May that day come soon."
Thomas will mark her 90th birthday on Aug. 4.

Helen Thomas is such an old liberal bag, I'd love to just slap her upside the left side of her right head.

Lynn,

I hope to see you in that front row seat someday.
