Michelle Obama talks to Barbara Walters about her buff arms

First Lady Michelle Obama attributes her buff arms to "determination" in an interview with ABC's Barbara Walters, who named her one of the most fascinating people of 2009.

MS. WALTERS: ....So do you feel pressured to have great arms? Do you have to get up every day and do the exercises?

MS. OBAMA: (Laughs.)

MS. WALTERS: I'm so glad you wore a sleeveless dress --

MS. OBAMA: Of course. Of course. You know, I --

I have to say that my personal routine hasn't changed much in the past 11 years. I mean, I really started right after I had Malia, our oldest. And some of that was, you know, in all honesty, it was a little sort of revenge. (Chuckles.)

Because I'm married to a man who has worked out all of his life. And regardless of how busy he is, he finds the time to work out. And there was a point at which I got a little resentful of that.

So if there's anything that I can attribute these arms to, it's probably just determination. (Laughs.)

MS. WALTERS: You know, I understand that many nights when you and the president and the girls sit down for dinner you do something called the rose and the thorn.

MS. OBAMA: Yes.

MS. WALTERS: The best and worst.

MS. OBAMA: Yes.

MS. WALTERS: So look back over this past year. What is the rose, what's the thorn?

MS. OBAMA: The rose has been the response of people, not just this nation, but around the globe. Seeing the warmth and the excitement, those have all been roses.

Thorns -- you know, not so many thorns. I mean, as Barack says, he has the thorny job.

MS. WALTERS: Yeah.

MS. OBAMA: If there are any thorns, it's just the constant concern that I'm -- I'm doing enough and that I'm doing my best and that I'm making the country proud. And, hopefully, people are happy with the job that I've done so far.

MS. WALTERS: There was an interview with you and your husband in which you frankly talked about the fact that at some point in your marriage the fact that he wanted politics bothered you.

MS. OBAMA: Mm-hmm. (In agreement.)

MS. WALTERS: He was away a lot. You were bringing up the kids by yourself.

MS. OBAMA: Yeah.

MS. WALTERS: And when did you say it's okay?

MS. OBAMA: I always had this dilemma, because I always thought, well, if I wanted somebody as my state senator or as my U.S. senator or as my president, I would want Barack Obama. And the only reason he wouldn't do it is if I said no.

And I just --

MS. WALTERS: He would have stopped if you said no?

MS. OBAMA: He would have. And I think it's that truth, the fact that he would have not pursued any of this had I really, really put my foot down, that it made it really hard to be the person that would stand in the way of someone else's dreams and some -- and the possibilities of his leadership.

And I definitely didn't want to be in that position. And I think I made the right call.

MS. WALTERS: (Laughs.) It's a little late, if you didn't.

MS. OBAMA: (Laughs.) That's right.

MS. WALTERS: I mean, here we are.

Can we talk about your arms?

MS. OBAMA: My arms?

MS. WALTERS: Your arms.

MS. OBAMA: Why, certainly. (Laughs.)

MS. WALTERS: Yes. There has been so much written about --

MS. OBAMA: Why -- why would you want to talk about my arms? (Laughs.)

MS. WALTERS: Well, nobody said a thing about your arms!

So do you feel pressured to have great arms?

(Laughs.)

MS. WALTERS: Do you have any guilty pleasures?

MS. OBAMA: Oof! It's usually food-based. (Laughs.) And, you know, really bad TV.

You know, my really lazy days are I sit with Bo, who usually climbs up on my lap. He thinks he's a lap dog. He'll cozy up with me. And I'm just clicking through mindless shows, a lot of, you know, shows about food and design and all that good stuff.

And it's just quiet. And I'm not thinking about anything for that second, not about the kids, not about my husband, not about my schedule. And if I get an hour of that during the course of a week -- (sighs) -- it feels like heaven. (Laughs.)

MS. SAWYER: And interview questions as only Barbara can ask them. And you can see all of her most fascinating people on our website, Abcnews.com.

END.

Barbara Walters, ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I think it is about time you packed up your desk and headed for the old age home. REALLY, Michelle Obama's arms? Her arms? Does anyone else see anything wrong with this. Are there not real important and or interesting things to report about in 2009? All I can do is shake my head. the only thing about this article that is FASCINATING is the fact that is has been published.

OUR FIRST LADY IS A LOVABLE BEAUTIFUL ROLE MODEL I JUST THINK SHE IS LIKE NO OTHER GOD BLESS HER AND THE PRESIDENT THOSE SO SMART AND CUTE FIRST DAUGTHERS THAT YOUNG IS JUST LIKE HER FATHER PRESIDENT OBAMA SHE IS TOUGH AS NAILS LOVE THEM I WILL BE THERE TO SURPORT HIM IN 2012

OMG!
first she is one of the sexiest people alive and now even most interesting... how lucky can this county get?!
Well, I rather stay the way I am a boring blobb -jabba the hut if that means I don't look like chimp and married a politician.

I think this interview is disgrace to Barbara Walters and certainly an insult to Michelle. With all that Michelle Obama is doing for her husband, her family and the country, to concentrate on her arms is disgusting!

arms?!!

The most notable thing about Michelle Obama is her abnormal under-bite. She needs to take care of that -- I bet Walters knows a good plastic surgeon. She should take care of that caboose also -- it's bigger than Hillary's.

Personally, I think Michelle Obama is a great lady. In a lot of ways she reminds me of Jackie Onasis. She carries herself so elegantly, but is so outgoing and friendly. She is just plain classy in all ways possible. Love her and her family. I too will be there in the next election

yo, sandra. you can help him now. get you mre's and canteen and head to afghanistan. blog us frm there hero!

you know picking michelle obama as top 10 interesting is just about as stupid as giving barack nobama the peace prize,, i just lost all respect for you

How on earth can you call him (Glenn Beck) someone who foments violence !?! Never has he done any such thing !! He gives us information that we get nowhere else. You are an intelligent woman. I am disappointed in you. Please look a little deeper into what is happening to our country. We The People are totally incensed. Remember the constitution ! Thank you, Judy

Michelle should worry about her huge butt. It is shocking to see the largest first lady in history. She is twice any presidents size!

Why watch thing that you know you won"t like? is it so you can leave nasty comments? Stupid. This is what America has come too. Lets she one of you do better then either of them. Never have or will accomplish what either of them have.

Walters aired the next day on the View clips that were left out of the interview with Mrs Obama Walter asked if she hit her children As if to say do you woop your kids How dare she How racist What white president's wife would she ask that question?

SANDRA, you are clearly an "O-Bot". Get a life and or an education.

Is that what it takes to be fascinating?? Arms? A disgrace to say the least. There are men who have no arms because they have lost their arms fighting for our security and freedom. Barbara Walters needs to retire.

LOVE Glenn Beck and I think he IS one of the most fascinating people in the media today. Sarah Palin is great and has my vote for anything she wants to run for. She can't possibly screw up our country any more than the Marxist Twit is doing now. The rest of the contestants can go suck eggs. I don't give a rat's patootie for any of them.

She's definitely no Jackie Kennedy. When will the media stop pretending she is.

I miss first lady Laura Bush! Now she is a person with class and morals.I am sure she was not worried about how she looks to other people, especially showing off her arms. Interesting, Mrs.Obama's whirlwind of the new house, new garden, new playground, new dog, posing on every magazine cover, but they still have not found a church!
People are suffering all over this country, fighting for our freedom and what subject is covered, Mrs. Obama's guilty pleasures? Unbelievable interview, fascinating arms, give us a break!
