CHICAGO--America's health-care crisis would be worse than it is without non-profit groups providing the health care that government and the private sector do not, former President Bill Clinton said in Chicago today.

"Most people do not know the cope of the problem," Clinton said at the Palmer House Hilton in a speech to about 700 supporters of Chicago House, a non-profit that provides housing and care for 1,100 people with AIDS.

Clinton just met with Democratic senators in Washington Tuesday, urging them to pass health-care reform this year. Clinton shared some of the arguments he made for urgent action:

"We are spending 16.5 percent of our income on health care," he said. "The next most expensive country is Switzerland, at 11.5. The next most expensive is Canada, at 10.5. All of our competitors -- Germany, Japan -- are between 9 and 10 percent. We are cutting a check at the beginning of evrey year and burning it."

The high cost of health care in America shows up in our homeless rates, fewer college graduates and high unemployment rates, Clinton said.

"In parts of Michigan where they have 30 percent unemployment after the collapse in the car industry, part of that is because Gen Motors had $1,500 a car in health-care costs and Toyota had $110," Clinton said.

"Let's assume they pass the best health care bill imaginable," Clinton said. "There will still be a gap between what the government can provide and what the private sector can produce."

Chicago House gets about 60 percent of its budget from government sources. Its chief executive, Stan Sloan, said much more is needed, especially better funding of Medicaid funneled through the state.

Since 1985, the non-profit has run about five buildings in Uptown and the West Side where people living with AIDS are housed, Sloan said. Today's fund-raiser was expected to bring in about $400,000, he said.

Clinton mentioned the shootings at Fort Hood, Texas, and tried to tie it into a broader discussion about people of the world respecting each other's differences as he says he sees in Chicago.

"You have people from more than 150 different ethnic and racial groups," Clinton said. "Think about what sparked the tragedy at Fort Hood. Some of the most moving things I have read since the Fort Hood tragedy have been the comments of our Muslim veterans who were horrified by what happened and feel no one will ever trust them again."

Clinton looked out at the diverse crowd and said it was different than a crowd of white men that might be seen on the TV show "Mad Men."

"You ever watch that TV series 'Mad Men?' " Clinton asked. "If I keep watching this program, will I ever find a happy person? Great television. Good drama. But a lot of really painful reminders in that show about how black people were supposed to run the elevators... were supposed to ask permission before they get on an elevator. The way women were treated is appalling, and only occasionally funny to me."

Clinton lies again. He's pushing a bill that would multiply health costs as something "to control costs"!

For the House to approve the Obamacare scam, Obama and his accomplices ended up bribing (at our expense) Big Pharma, AARP, AMA, congressmen and congresswomen including Cao, insurance companies, etc. Among the latest to be bribed were insurance companies, which are now happy because Obama will send us to JAIL if we fail to buy COMPREHESIVE health insurance!

* Section 7203 - misdemeanor willful failure to pay is punishable by a fine of up to $25,000 and/or imprisonment of up to one year.

* Section 7201 - felony willful evasion is punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years." [page 3]

And how much will the stay-out-of-jail insurance cost? The Joint Committee noted that "according to a recent analysis by the Congressional Budget Office, the lowest-cost family non-group plan under HR 3862 (the Pelosi bill) would cost $15,000 by 2016."

Obama's bill only provides subsidies to help pay this enormous sum after families making about $45,000 have paid 8% of their income for insurance and after those earning a household income of about $65,000 have kicked in 12%.

The bill increases taxes and costs for everyone who has an income. Those barely in the middle class will end up poor after paying for mandatory health insurance or destitute after losing their jobs.

Pres. Clinton is a wise man and a man concerned with the whole and not just the part who is wealthy and well-connected!

Democrats must not be "hoodwinked and fooled" into an abortion fight that does not really exist! We should know that Speaker Nancy Pelosi would never let abortion go by the wayside. We should be smarter than that... AND, we must keep our "eye" on the Prize -- and the long awaited and wished for Goal of healthcare for all Americans and lower premiums for those who are already insured. Democrats have a chance to lead by actually doing something good for Americans -- like health care, which is tied to the deficit and the bankrupting of businesses and families. We must keep our "eye" on the Prize and not be labeled with the title of another "do nothing Congress"!

GOP politicians and operatives continue to dishonestly and deceptively say that they cannot support a public option, they claim that they want to keep costs down for the American people! Really? This they claim all the while knowing that a public option/competition is the only way to really control cost and to bring about true reform thereby putting a definite Halt to the “out of control” medical costs and premiums crippling people and businesses today, making it harder and harder for average Americans and young people to realize and take advantage of the slowly, slipping away American Dream. One could ask themselves, If you happen to lose your job today or tomorrow in these unstable economic times and at a time when we currently do not have healthcare reform for all, who would pay you or your familiy's health care costs, that is, if you are lucky enough to be able to see a doctor without insurance? This American Dream, now being called Socialism by the GOP has slowly been slipping away, and is in the last throes of dying, if we do not forge a new path onwards toward inclusion and cooperation for all. This dream of America will die to be replaced with just another third world country -- only to go into the history books as another failed experiment.

Again, let us not be fooled by the GOP Trojan Horse "abortion" to distract us and divide us while they laugh gleefully behind our backs as to how they have beat us once again on a myth and an illusion!

(FYI: The Conservative blog "Powerline" barred me from commenting on their blog because my ideas were opposite theirs. This is something a Liberal blog would never do -- censor free speach because it did not agree with theirs!)

Well, if anyone should know about mistreating women it would be Bill Clinton! He IS an expert at doing it, after all!

Bill Clinton:
"The way women were treated is appalling, and only occasionally funny to me."

The irony of this statement, and who made it, is nearly immeasurable!

(FYI: The Conservative blog "Powerline" barred me from commenting on their blog because my ideas were opposite theirs. This is something a Liberal blog would never do -- censor free speach because it did not agree with theirs!)

Please. Liberals like Kos and Mad King Charles of LGF ban people for disagreeing with them all the time. I even remember kos outright admitting it a few years ago. Go express liberal ideas at hotair or ace of spades and see if you get banned, and while you're at it cut the circle jerk crap. Some liberal blogs as well as some conservative blogs don't tolerate dissent. Some do. Liberals are not and never have been paragons of free speech standing above everyone else.

Libs don't censure free speech? What alternate universe do you live in? The anti-free speech fascists are on the lib side! And you are admitting, "Angellight" that the Demo party is the party of death. Too bad about all those dead babies, right? Shame on you.

Now if we could just get him to discuss how Muslims treat women...

"(FYI: The Conservative blog "Powerline" barred me from commenting on their blog because my ideas were opposite theirs. This is something a Liberal blog would never do -- censor free speach because it did not agree with theirs!)"

That's funny....I wonder why I was banned from about 7 liberal blogs then?

Clinton is a liar and was proven to be one by the Congress.

He "claims" that the reason Democrats got ousted back when he tried to pass universal health care was because they didn't succeed. That's ridiculous! If the voters were mad that Democrats didn't pass health care while Republicans opposed it, then why on Earth would they vote IN the Republicans and not vote in more Democrats to get it done?

"This they claim all the while knowing that a public option/competition is the only way to really control cost and to bring about true reform"

Ummmm....I guess you never heard of Tort Reform? If you want competition, then allow all the hundreds of Heath Insurance Companies to sell health insurance across state lines!

Strange I don't hear Liberals complaining that clothing retailers are evil like they do the HC Insurance companies.....clothing is a necessity like health care and the profit margin is 10 times higher than what the insurance companies are getting.

Democrats never mention what the CBO analysis of their health care reform bill found.....

Even with all the monetary penalties and possible imprisonment the unconstitutional mandate forcing Americans to buy insurance would do, it would STILL leave 25 million Americans without health insurance! That is what the CBO analysis found.

If the object was to insure all Americans and we are going to be saddled with Trillions of additional deficit, then you'd THINK it would actually DO what they claim it would! But it won't.

About the TV program Mad Men, former Pres. Clinton says "...The way women were treated is appalling, and only occasionally funny to me." He should add, "I really know how to treat women with respect, particularly young women who work for me. While in a position of power I seduce them in private and then smear them in public. I lie under oath about them in court, if necessary. These kinds of things are only occasionally funny to me." He could add to that, "You can trust me to tell the truth about health care because I only lie under oath when I'm in court and then only when it involves sex, not health care."

Give me a break. Making up numbers to support a lost cause-- one that the American people don't even want-- does nothing to help his cause.

And Angellight, you're not too bright if you think that liberal blogs don't delete comments or ban members. Not even the mainstream Obama-praising media lets comments go without censoring. MSNBC immediately deletes any comments critical of the current administration.

Typical leftist thinking that the side you agree with is fair, just because you personally haven't been subjected to their policies.

So how is this Health insurance legislation going to lower healthcare costs and cover everyone? I see quite a bit of rhetoric about "don't be fooled by GOP lies". But I never hear or read a sensible explanation about how this legislation will reduce people's health insurance costs. The argument of "public option to force insurance companies to lower their prices" is ridiculous. Either the public option is so robust that everyone chooses it and we have government-run healthcare, ie no choice (which most Democrats state is the last thing they want). Or the Public Option is not a threat to private insurance - because why? It's too weak, won't compete? so it's not really an option, why is it offered? Reminds me of the movie "Idiocracy": Brawno has what plants need! What's that? It's got electrolytes! What are electrolytes? It's what plants need!

Angellight-

I don't know what else you are delusional about, but Powerline doesn't have comments - they had to stop them years ago because of the vile filth preople who disagreed with them used to post - and the separate forum page, now also discontniued, never banned anyone without warning, never banned anyone for differing opinions, and only ever banned repeat offenders for violating the rules of civility which they enforced.

The money quote in this article is "wise, inspirational good deed doing" Bill Clinton claiming the treatment of women on a TV show is apalling. Bill, dude, look in a mirror!

Yes Sir, Mr. Bill Clinton on "stellar" ethics in the treatment of women. Hey Bill - how's Monica???

"The way women were treated is appalling", Now that is comedy gold.

Who believes that our government can devise a system that covers 30 million more people and cut costs?

Good God Bubba - The man with the girlie hands strikes again. Babble-babble-babble. He is closing in on Jimah Carter for wrong words wrong time lines. Crawl back under the lack of morality rock you slithered out from...

Clinton remains a great statesman, and someone who understands how to explain to the heart of the matter in clear simple words.

How can Clinton mention anything to do with GM and keep a straight face. Yes, it may cost $1500 for GM to build a car compared to the $110 for Toyota to do the same, but Health Coverage has nothing to do with it. Unions are what make GMs inferior product cost more than Toyotas.

"You ever watch that TV series 'Mad Men?' " Clinton asked ... The way women were treated is appalling, and only occasionally funny to me."

You've GOT to be kidding me.

Bill Clinton, the former President that had a reputation of dipping his (ahem) into the secretarial pool back when he was Governor of Arkansas is talking about how women are treated on Mad Men. The former President who, like Roger Sterling, engaged in sexual acts with female underlings in his office, and engaged in a smear campaigns against them when they came forward to admit their involvement with him.

Yet another example of how Democrats regularly pee on us and tell us it's raining -- either that, or they think their target audience have short memories and deficient history books.

That having been said, Barack Obama is actually more like Don Draper than Obama. Go to http://tiny.cc/madmantan for evidence.

Clinton reamians a great scumbag who understands nothing more than to exist on the other side of the world away from elephant legged Hillary.

Clinton mistreats women and then LIES about it to the entire world and people still give him credit? Are you just stupid? Clinton has raped this country for every dime he can get. Clinton made his millions off you and me, the taxpayer. If you believe Clinton, then you believe I can sell you a million dollars worth of gold for a dollar. Get real.

Yeah, right, no one EVER gets banned at Democratic Underground for deviating from groupthink. Are you really this clueless?

hmm. Neither party is a paragon of virtue, and neither party is a slavering dog of hell, despite what some may believe.

Point one, most of us do realize that this program portrays a different decade. So, anyone able to laugh at themselves yet?

Point two, Monica was of age, and flashed her thong for ONE man, not Miami Beach, so how is it she has become an innocent in that affair?

Point three, are dead babies any deader if they die from lack of health care? or abuse? or neglect? or just aren't wanted?

Point 3.5, does Alicia really think that shockingly blunt language will deter clear consideration of who controls my body? And just how many children has Alicia raised that weren't hers biologically?

Point 4, the USA is the only nation on Earth whose population wasted so much time worrying about Clinton's morals.

Point 5, I believe I have read that judging others is an activity best left for the sinless. Please note, I make no judgment, but I sure do question that of others!

to AntonioSosa-

About- "Obama will send us to JAIL if we fail to buy COMPREHESIVE health insurance!
* Section 7203 - misdemeanor willful failure to pay is punishable by a fine of up to $25,000 and/or imprisonment of up to one year.
* Section 7201 - felony willful evasion is punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years." [page 3]"

First off, the the the bill (H.R. 3962) does not specify that those that don't buy health insurance will be sent to jail. The penalty is a tax.

It is 2.5% of income, limited to cost of average premium. Please see-

"H.R. 3962, Part III, Sec. 501, SEC. 59B. TAX ON INDIVIDUALS WITHOUT ACCEPTABLE HEALTH CARE COVERAGE.

`(a) Tax Imposed- In the case of any individual who does not meet the requirements of subsection (d) at any time during the taxable year, there is hereby imposed a tax equal to 2.5 percent of the excess of--

`(1) the taxpayer's modified adjusted gross income for the taxable year, over

`(2) the amount of gross income specified in section 6012(a)(1) with respect to the taxpayer.

`(b) Limitations-

`(1) TAX LIMITED TO AVERAGE PREMIUM..." (1)

Also, there are no Sec. 7201 and 7203 in the Bill. These are sections in the Internal Revenue Code (January 2002), US Code - Title 26. (2)

And about- "Obama's bill only provides subsidies to help pay this enormous sum after families making about $45,000 have paid 8% of their income for insurance and after those earning a household income of about $65,000 have kicked in 12%."

People below a certain income, about 45,000. will go into an expanded Medicaid- "Health reform scenario is modeled that would expand Medicaid to individuals with incomes up to 133 percent of the federal poverty line (FPL), provide subsidies for individuals with incomes between 133 and 399 percent of the FPL, and require individuals to obtain coverage through an individual mandate." (3)

The Bill will lower health care costs and is projected to lower our national deficit by 81 Billion over the next decade. (4)
