U.S. Holocaust Museum shooting; at least two wounded

WASHINGTON (AP) ‹ At least two people were shot Wednesday at the U.S.
Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, authorities said.

D.C. police spokeswoman Traci Hughes said a person walked into the museum at
about 1 p.m. with a rifle and shot a guard. Hughes says the shooter was also
shot.

Hughes said the victims¹ conditions were not known. Both were being rushed
to a hospital.

U.S. Park Police gave slightly different information, saying three people
had been shot. Fire department spokesman Alan Etter told CNN a third person
was hurt after being cut by broken glass.

The museum normally has a heavy security presence with guards positioned
both inside and outside. All visitors are required to pass through metal
detectors at the entrance, and bags are screened.

The museum, located just off the National Mall near the Washington Monument,
is a popular tourist attraction. It draws about 1.7 million visitors each
year.

Roads surrounding the museum have been closed.

THIS WAS A COWARDLY ACT!
VERY SHAMEFUL, IT SHOULDN'T BE MENTIONED THAT
THIS PERSON WAS IN WORLD WAR ll, HE DISGRACED
HIMSELF, HIS FAMILY, HIS FELLOW SOLDIERS, TO
WALK IN A MUSEUM, A HOLOCAUST MUSEUM AT THAT, AND
TO DO THIS, VERY SHAMEFUL,PUT THE WORD OUT TO THE
NRA, THAT'S WHY GUNS SHOULDN'T BE FLOWING SO
RAMPANTLY IN CERTAIN INDIVIDUAL'S HOMES, I DON'T
THINK A GUY LIVING IN ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND DID
ALOT OF HUNTING!
THIS IS ANOTHER SAD CHAPTER IN AMERICAN HISTORY!
TO THE FAMILY OF THE OFFICER WHO DIED IN THE LINE
OF DUTY, SAVING OTHERS, I AM VERY SORRY FOR YOUR
LOSS, YOUR FAMILY MEMBER IS AN AMERICAN HERO!

Dear Editor,

May God receive him, and comfort his family.

And I wish to express my outrage that the Holocaust, unlike any other historical event, is not subject to critical examination. Furthermore I deplore the fact that many so-called democratic states have laws that criminalize an examination and understanding of the Holocaust. It is my position that the veracity of Holocaust assertions should be determined in the marketplace of scholarly discourse and not in our legislatures bodies and courthouses.
