"Smoke your lettuce;" House debating tobacco regulation bill

From C-SPAN's coverage of the U.S. House floor this morning, during floor debate on regulating tobacco products.

Rep. Steve Buyer (R-IN):

"Too often we should be careful about being cute here on the House floor. So cute means the reference with regard to lettuce. So I'll follow your logic. Do you realize if you were to take that lettuce, dry it, and roll it, and smoke it. And you go ahead and you smoke your lettuce. Do you realize that you are going to end up with similar problems than if you were smoking tobaccco. It's not the nicotine that kills. It's the smoke that kills. So It's the inhalation of the smoke. That's what causes and is responsible for the pandemic of cancers, of heart disease, respiratory disease, and other disease. It's the smoke."

You just don't get it, do you? Congress is granting a power the Constitution does not give them! The debate isn't just about health; where does the Constitution grant rights to govern people to protect them against themselves?

This is NOT a "general welfare" of the people clause. This is one more individual right being blown-away like smoke in the night! How many more of our rights are left?

It is individual's responsibility to be civil to others, inform themselves, and make their own choices, NOT the Government's job to police that!

Until the government starts returning to the REPUBLIC our forefathers intended, each and every one of our otherwise guaranteed RIGHTS are closed!

It's up to we the people to change this; what are we waiting for?

Tobacco actually gets you on two fronts. The tar and particulates from smoke are major contributors to lung issues. Nicotine (a super toxin, carcinogen)crosses into the blood stream and flows to every organ in the body increasing the probability of cancer in those organs. I actually tried smoking lettuce as a teenager. That lasted for about one-half of a cigarette as fortunately there was nothing in lettuce that made me want more.

I have absolutely no intentions of letting the government force my hand on smoking.

I have smoked, do smoke and will smoke until I wish to stop.
Nobody will decide that for me. NOBODY.
If they want a mass civil revolt they're going about it the correct way.

Here's some more information on the bill and something on the chemicals involved in cigarette production: Tobacco Bill Passes the Senate: http://www.newsinferno.com/archives/6860#more-6860

There is absolutely NO evidence that nicotine is a carcinogen. Bob Hall should do his homework. It has never been evaluated. And as bad as smoking might be there is nothing in the US Constitution that gives the Federal govt. any authority in this. Stand up and scream now, or it will soon be Lord Obama instead of President Obama. He is disregarding the law on many fronts.

NEWS FLASH - YOUR GOVERNMENT WANTS YOU DEAD! POPULATION CONTROL! THEY WANT YOU TO SMOKE TOBACCO, NOT E-CIGARETTES OR LIGHT CIGARETTES! THEY WANT YOU TO SMOKE THE FULL FLAVOR "FLAME RETARDED" TOBACCO CIGARETTE SO YOU DIE FASTER!

Why is it that alcohol is given a free pass? It's advertised on television, billboards and public transit systems, targets teens and minorities and is more destructive to public health than cigarettes ever were. While there is not a single case where doctors can say definitively that a death resulted from second hand smoke, there are plenty of second hand drinking fatalities, destroyed families, beaten spouses and terrorized children. No one ever beat their wife and kids because they smoked a cigarette.

Yes it is the smoke that kills. However, it is the the nicotine that gives the rush that keeps you smoking. One will not smoke if there is no nicotine rush.

Steve Buyer is the recipient of the largest amount of tobacco money of any Congressman in the history of Indiana. He is especially favored by Smokeless Tobacco PACs. He is nothing but a spokesperson for his corporate donors. He's the same guy who said we should use nuclear weapons in Afghanistan and who lied to Congress that he had been called to active duty in Iraq and then took a 3 week leave of absence at his home.

NICOTINE IS GOOD FOR YOU, GET A LIFE AND GROW UP, NICOTINE IS VERY BAD FOR YOU, AND LUNG CANCER CONFIRMS THIS INFORMATION, THE PERSON SHOUTING ABOUT IT NOT BEING THIS AND THAT, YOU MUST WORK FOR THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY!
NEXT TIME TELL US THE TRUTH, BECAUSE IT WILL SET YOU FREE!
SMOKING WILL WIPE YOUR LUNGS OUT AND YOUR PANCREAS AS WELL!
PUFF TODAY, GONE TOMORROW!

"where does the Constitution grant rights to govern people to protect them against themselves?"

Where does the Constitution grant the power for the federal government to define and regulate marriage?
