President Obama official schedule and guidance, June 24, 2009. Health care reform

Office of the Press Secretary
June 23, 2009

In the morning, the President will receive the Presidential Daily Briefing, the Economic Daily Briefing, and meet with senior advisors in the Oval Office. These meetings are closed press.

In the afternoon in the Roosevelt Room, the President will meet with five of the nine governors from both parties - Governors Jennifer Granholm (D-MI), Jim Douglas (R-VT), Jim Doyle (D-WI), Mike Rounds (R-SD), and Christine Gregoire (D-WA) - who co-hosted Regional Forums on Health Reform earlier this year. This meeting will provide the governors with the opportunity to share with the President the lessons they took away from the Regional Forums, and to discuss the need to enact health reform that finally gets America's spiraling health care costs under control. There will be a pool spray at the bottom of the meeting.

In the evening, the President will participate in a town hall on health care in the East Room. The event will be recorded live-to-tape and will be broadcast on ABC at 10:00PM EDT. There will be print pool coverage, embargoed until 10:00PM EDT.

Also in the morning, the White House will release a new video with Van Jones, Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality, showing how the President's vision a clean energy economy is already becoming a reality. The video will be available at 10:30AM EDT at At 3:00PM EDT, Van Jones will conduct a live-streamed chat through Facebook and the White House website around the video.

Briefing Schedule

1:45PM Briefing by Press Secretary Robert Gibbs

Let’s assume I'm the Government: I receive ten thousand dollars a year from you in the form of taxes. However, if you are not able to go to work, then my payment drops. If you don't work a full year, then I don't get paid anything. It seems to make more sense to take care of you and most likely get all my money from you. Let’s say I decide to spend a thousand a year to make sure you stay healthy, then I have ten to one return on my dollar. I fail to see how anyone can argue with this. Well one group could: the group that is stealing from the group that needs health care and can’t afford it. We all know the members of that group.

America is waking up; we know we are going the wrong way and destroying our own health. We are looking for better health, not ways to pay for bad health. The employment lifestyle has polluted our air, land, water and food and destroyed our quality of life. It has separated families and left generations without family supervision and guidance. We can overcome the world problems we created with the employment lifestyle by turning to a garden paradise lifestyle. Instead of trees, plants and pets that provide no fresh food around us, we can choose useful ones. That solves world problems easily, quickly, and inexpensively. It is the only sustainable lifestyle through eternity.

Science has proven that prayer, faith, herbs, sunshine and light exercise with fresh food is the best health restoring program available. It is not wisdom to go into debt, take on new bills, and be stuck in employment to pay for bills we generate because we do not choose a garden paradise lifestyle. It is the best God has for us. If we want it, we must call for it and begin it.

Healthcare reform proposed by the Federal Government may actually eliminate affordable medical insurance from the private sector entirely. While publicly funded healthcare may seem to create affordable medical insurance for more Americans, it may actually create a bigger problem.

Private insurance companies must not only cover their costs and earn a profit; they also need to maintain a reserve of cash to pay out claims. If a new public health care program is developed and then pays medical costs at a reduced rate like the current systems do, it means there will be an increase in expense shifted onto private insurance to make up the difference. This increased cost will need to be offset through higher premiums for the people covered under private medical insurance plans. As those who have private insurance become forced to pay increasingly higher premiums, the number of Americans who no longer find private insurance an affordable health coverage option will increase. Those people will then need to turn to the newly formed public healthcare program and will then become part of the increased costs passed on to private insurance by underpaid doctors and hospitals.

As more unpaid costs from private health insurance continue to be pushed into premium prices and more people become unable to pay those premiums, eventually private health insurance will be completely unable to compete with public programs and will face the inability to stay in business. Affordable healthcare in the private sector will become impossible to find.
