Michelle Obama visits Corporation for National Service

Tuesday, May 12th: The First Lady will continue her outreach to the DC community and her support of national service programs by visiting the Corporation for National and Community Service, where she will deliver remarks. Mrs. Obama has dedicated herself to community service throughout her career, starting with her work founding the Chicago chapter of Public Allies, an AmeriCorps program that prepares young people for public service. This event, scheduled for 2:45 PM EST, is pooled press.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy a year ago profiled future first lady Michelle Obama's work with Public Allies, a Chicago-based charity that works nationwide to train young people for public-service jobs. She said at that time that her work inspired then-Senator Barack Obama to commit to expanding national public service: "He saw me work in that environment," she said in an interview. "Of all the jobs I've had, if I were to do anything again at the drop of a heartbeat it would be to work on this kind of program. I was really passionate and engaged; this was like a family, there was drama, everyone knew everyone."
