The Chronicle of Philanthropy a year ago profiled future first lady Michelle Obama's work with Public Allies, a Chicago-based charity that works nationwide to train young people for public-service jobs. She said at that time that her work inspired then-Senator Barack Obama to commit to expanding national public service: "He saw me work in that environment," she said in an interview. "Of all the jobs I've had, if I were to do anything again at the drop of a heartbeat it would be to work on this kind of program. I was really passionate and engaged; this was like a family, there was drama, everyone knew everyone."
