WASHINGTON--First Lady Michelle Obama, talked to ABC News Robin Roberts about her concerns for military families during their Thursday afternoon interview, conducted after Mrs. Obama met with military families at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. The interview was broadcast Friday morning on "Good Morning America."

At the end of their talk, Roberts asked the First Lady what she does to relax in the evening away from the public.

"I must confess," Mrs. Obama said, "Sometimes I click on some non-important TV and just veg out.

"I'm usually asleep right after the kids go to be. I get up early and work out. That tends to be my relaxation. It happens in the morning."

Lynn Sweet footnote: I'm told by the East Wing that Mrs. Obama works out in the White House gym.

On Friday, March 13, Robin Roberts' exclusive interview with First Lady Michelle Obama aired on ABC News' "Good Morning America."

ROBIN, BACK TO YOU AND YOUR INTERVIEW WITH THE FIRST LADY.

WE BEGIN WITH OUR EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH MICHELLE OBAMA. HER FIRST INTERVIEW SINCE BECOMING FIRST LADY. A RECENT POLL SHOWS THAT 69% OF AMERICANS VIEW HER FAVORABLY, WHICH MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE AMBITIOUS AGENDA SHE SET FOR HERSELF. SUPPORTING MILITARY FAMILIES IS
WHAT SHE WANTED TO TALK ABOUT. WE WERE THERE YESTERDAY, AS HE MADE HER FIRST MILITARY TRIP AS FIRST LADY, TO FAMILIES AT FT. BRAGG, IN FAYETTEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA. THE FIRST LADY WAS GREETED LIKE A ROCK STAR. THE MEN AND WOMEN EXCITED BY HER VISIT.

IT WAS FANTASTIC. IT WAS WONDERFUL. I'M PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN.

Reporter: EVEN AS SHE MADE HER WAY OVER TO COME TALK TO ME, THERE WAS ONE MORE PICTURE TO BE TAKEN. ONE MORE PERSON TO HUG. AND WHEN WE TRIED TO CHAT, WELL, YOU CAN SEE WHAT HAPPENED. YOU ARE QUICKLY FINDING YOUR SEA LEGS AS FIRST LADY.

YOU KNOW? WE'VE TALKED BEFORE. I'M STILL JUST TRYING TO BE ME. AND -- IF I AM STILL BEING GENUINELY ME, IT'S EASY FOR ME TO FIND MY LEGS BECAUSE IT'S
JUST ME BEING ME HERE. JUST HAPPEN TO BE THE FIRST LADY NOW.

THAT'S HOW YOU LOOK AT IT. THAT'S THE ONLY THING THAT'S REALLY CHANGED. LOOK AT THIS, THOUGH. BUT FOR ALL THE CHEERS, THE FIRST LADY IS HERE ON SERIOUS BUSINESS. THIS IS HER FIRST OFFICIAL TRIP OUTSIDE OF WASHINGTON. AND SHE CHOSE THE OCCASION TO HIGHLIGHT AN ISSUE NEAR AND DEAR TO HER HEART, THE STRUGGLE OF OUR NATION'S MILITARY FAMILIES.

I THINK I HAVE THE FUN PART.

Reporter: HOW'S THAT?

WELL, YOU KNOW, THE THINGS I DO ARE UNIVERSALLY POPULAR AND IMPORTANT. AND IT'S VERY EASY TO RALLY A NATION AROUND MILITARY FAMILIES. YOU KNOW? IT'S NOT A HARD THING TO DO. PEOPLE UNDERSTAND IT, ONCE THE ISSUE IS BROUGHT TO THEIR ATTENTION. AND THEY'RE READY TO DO WHATEVER THEY CAN.

Reporter: THIS IS YOUR FIRST TRIP OUTSIDE OF D.C. WHY?

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE FOR ME. AND IT STARTED TAKING SHAPE THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL. I THINK I WAS LIKE MOST AMERICANS. PRETTY OBLIVIOUS TO THE LIFE OF MILITARY FAMILIES. SORT OF TAKING IT FOR GRANTED. I JUST ASSUMED THAT IF WE CARE ABOUT OUR TROOPS AND WE SEND THEM TO WAR, THAT NATURALLY, WE'D BE TAKING CARE OF THEIR FAMILIES. I DON'T THINK MOST OF US KNOW THAT MANY MILITARY FAMILIES ARE MOVING MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF A CHILD'S LIFETIME. AND EVERY TIME THEY MOVE, THE SPOUSE HAS TO WORRY ABOUT WHETHER SHE CAN FIND A JOB AT THE PAY RATE THAT SHE LEFT THE LAST JOB. OR WHETHER THE SPOUSE CAN FINISH HIS EDUCATION. WILL HIS CREDITS TRANSFER? AND WILL THEY HAVE ACCESS TO DECENT AND QUALITY CHILD CARE AT THE NEXT FACILITY THAT THEY'RE LOCATED IN? AND HOW ARE FAMILIES LIVING? SOME OF WHOM ARE YOUNG ENLISTED WHO ARE LIVING RIGHT AT THE POVERTY LINE BECAUSE THE PAY ISN'T ENOUGH. THESE ARE THINGS THAT I WASN'T AWARE THAT WAS GOING ON.

Reporter: YOU ARE MARRIED TO THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF. AND A WOMAN SAYS, I'M ON FOOD STAMPS.

UH-HUH.

Reporter: HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL WHEN YOU HEAR THAT?

IT HURTS. IT HURTS. YOU KNOW, THESE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE WILLING TO SEND THEIR LOVED ONES OFF TO, PERHAPS, GIVE THEIR LIVES, THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE. BUT YET, THEY'RE LIVING BACK AT HOME ON FOOD STAMPS. IT'S NOT RIGHT. AND IT'S NOT WHERE WE SHOULD BE AS A NATION. THAT'S WHY ONE OF THE THINGS THAT BARACK HAS DONE IN THIS CURRENT BUDGET IS PUT MONEY IN THERE TO INCREASE THE PAY OF MILITARY BY 2.9%, WHICH IS ONLY A DOWNPAYMENT ON WHAT WE NEED TO DO. BUT EVEN SMALL PERCENTAGES ARE GOING TO MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN SOME PEOPLE'S LIVES. SO, THAT HURTS. YOU KNOW, THAT'S THE KIND OF
THING THAT I DON'T THINK ANYONE IN THIS NATION, IF THEY WERE AWARE, WOULD TOLERATE. YOU KNOW, IF WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO HAVE A STRONG MILITARY, WE DON'T -- WE HAVE TO CONTINUE TO RECRUIT AND RETAIN FAMILIES. AND WHAT WE HAVE TO REALIZE IS THAT YOU'RE NOT JUST RECRUITING
THE SOLDIER. YOU'RE NOT JUST TRYING TO RETAIN AN INDIVIDUAL TROOP. YOU'RE TRYING TO RETAIN THAT FAMILY. AND IF -- WHEN IT'S TIME TO REENLIST THEY LOOK AROUND AND THEY CAN'T FIND A LIFE FOR THEMSELVES, I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT SPOUSE WILL SAY, LET'S GO. LET'S CALL IT A DAY. LET'S PULL DOWN OUR TENT AND MOVE ON TO SOMETHING ELSE. AND WE LOSE SUPPORT THAT WE DESPERATELY NEED AS A NATION.

Reporter: YOUR HUSBAND HAS REALLY HAD THE -- HIT THE GROUND RUNNING WITH ALL THE ISSUES THAT ARE FACING OUR COUNTRY RIGHT NOW. PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT WE'RE GOING TO ALL HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER AND MAKE A SET OF SACRIFICES. AND THEY HAVE FAITH, AS I DO, THAT OUR CURRENT COMMANDER IN CHIEF WILL SEE US THROUGH THESE TIMES.

Reporter: WE ASKED OUR AUDIENCE TO ALLOW SOME QUESTIONS. AND ONE THAT THEY ASKED, IT SAYS, ROBIN, PLEASE ASK MRS. OBAMA, HOW CAN SHE STAY SO POSITIVE ABOUT THE ECONOMY?

BECAUSE I BELIEVE IN THIS NATION. AND I BELIEVE IN MY HUSBAND. THOSE ARE TWO THINGS. I WOULDN'T WANT ANYBODY BUT BARACK OBAMA TO BE WORKING AT
THIS TIME BECAUSE HE IS A FOCUSED, CLEAR-THINKING, RATIONAL MAN. THAT'S WHAT WE NEED RIGHT NOW. I GOT TO TRAVEL AROUND THIS COUNTRY FOR TWO YEARS. AND PEOPLE ARE DECENT. AND THEY'RE READY TO WORK. PEOPLE AREN'T LOOKING FOR A HANDOUT. YOU KNOW? THEY JUST WANT A FAIR SHAKE.
AND THAT'S A GOOD PLACE TO START AS A NATION, WHEN YOU'RE TRYING TO MOVE TO THE NEXT LEVEL AS A SOCIETY. SO, I -- YOU KNOW, I'VE GOT FAITH IN US, AS A NATION.

MRS. OBAMA HAS NOT FINALIZED HER AGENDA AS FIRST LADY. BUT SHE DOES KNOW MILITARY FAMILIES WILL PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN THAT.

THAT MAKES SENSE. THEY ARE LARGELY FORGOTTEN, AS SHE SAID. A HUGE NEED THERE.

WE SPENT A MAJORITY OF THE TIME TALKING ABOUT THAT YESTERDAY. ALSO, WE'LL SEE THIS LATER COMING UP. NEW DETAILS ON HOW THE KIDS ARE ADJUSTING TO LIFE INSIDE THEIR NEW HOME. HAVE THEY POPPED INTO THE OVAL OFFICE AT ALL?

OH, YEAH. --

THEY'VE DONE THEIR POPPING.

THEY HAVEN'T BROKEN ANYTHING IN THE HOUSE HAVE THEY, YET?

NO. WE'VE HAD SOME GUESTS THAT HAVE BROKEN THINGS. BUT NOT THE KIDS. AND THEY KNOW WHO THEY ARE.

THOSE GUESTS KNOW WHO THEY ARE. THAT'S AHEAD IN OUR NEXT HALF HOUR.

IN THIS HALF HOUR, WE HAVE MORE OF OUR EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH MICHELLE OBAMA. AS WE SAID, WE TRAVELED WITH THE FIRST LADY TO FT. BRAGG, IN
FAYETTEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA, TO MEET WITH MILITARY FAMILIES. SHE ALSO TALKED TO US ABOUT HOW SHE'S HANDLING THE TRANSITION FROM WORKING MOM TO FIRST LADY. AND HOW SHE'S PROVIDING A SENSE OF NORMALCY FOR HER DAUGHTERS, AMID THE DECIDEDLY NOT-NORMAL SETTING OF THE WHITE HOUSE. WHEN I MET UP WITH THE FIRST LADY, IT WAS DURING A JAM-PACKED DAY AT FT. BRAGG. MEETING WITH MILITARY FAMILIES. AND TALKING ABOUT THEIR NEEDS. BUT, OF COURSE, NEEDS OF HER OWN TWO, LITTLE GIRLS, ARE NEVER VERY FAR FROM HER THOUGHTS. HOW ARE THEY DOING?

THEY'RE DOING GREAT. AND I THINK THEY'RE DOING GREAT BECAUSE I'VE BEEN ABLE TO STRIKE A BALANCE. I THINK I HAVE A PRETTY FULL PLATE. BUT I STILL HAVE TIME TO BE HOME FOR HOMEWORK. AND TO MAKE SURE I'M THERE BEFORE THEY LEAVE AND TO GO TO THEIR PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES, A AND ALL THE
THINGS THAT IS IMPORTANT TO DO AS A PARENT. SO, THEY'RE DOING GREAT. THEY KEEP US GOING.

Reporter: HOW BIG OF A HELP HAS YOUR MOM BEEN?

OH, SHE -- IT'S -- YOU KNOW. IT'S IMMEASURABLE. I THINK THAT ALL OF OUR TRANSITION HAS BEEN EASED BECAUSE OF HER PRESENCE. SHE'S JUST -- FIRST OF ALL,
SHE'S ONE OF THE FUNNIEST PEOPLE I KNOW. AND SHE'S SO NONIMPRESSED BY ANY OF THIS. SHE KEEPS ALL OF OUR FEET ON THE GROUND. AND LIKE TODAY, WHEN I'M OUT AND ABOUT, I'M GONE ALL DAY, SHE'S PICKING THEM UP. SHE'S GETTING THEM THROUGH HOMEWORK. MAKING SURE THEY PRACTICE PIANO. ALL THE THINGS THAT MOMS WOULD DO. BUT SHE DOES IT WITH THAT LITTLE EXTRA KICK OF LOVE. AND A LITTLE EXTRA PIECE OF DESSERT TONIGHT, I'M SURE IS GOING ON. SO, IT'S JUST BEEN GREAT TO HAVE HER. SHE'S ENJOYED THE TRANSITION, AS WELL. SO, IT'S BEEN GOOD.

Reporter: YOU'RE TALKING, READING "CAT IN THE HAT" TO THESE LITTLE KIDS. BEFORE YOU DO THAT, YOU SAY I HAVE TWO LITTLE ONES. AND A GIRL SAYS I KNOW SASHA.

I HAVE TWO LITTLE GIRLS. THEY'RE NOT AS LITTLE AS YOU GUYS. WHEN THEY WERE LITTLE, I USED TO READ THIS TO THEM.

I KNOW SASHA.

YOU KNOW SASHA? YOU KNOW SASHA?

AND MALIA.

AND MALIA. YEAH. THOSE ARE MY LIDDLE GIRLS. I JUST THINK HOW SWEET? YOU KNOW? THAT'S THE POWER OF KIDS CONNECTING WITH OTHER KIDS. SHE PROBABLY DIDN'T REALLY KNOW MY NAME. BUT SHE KNEW MALIA AND SASHA. AND I THINK THAT THAT'S, YOU KNOW, BEEN WONDERFUL FOR THE NATION TO HAVE TWO, LITTLE KIDS IN THE WHITE HOUSE THAT THEY CAN CONNECT TO. EVEN THOUGH WE TRY NOT TO HAVE THEM TOO EXPOSED BECAUSE WE WANT THEIR LIVES TO BE NORMAL. BUT I THINK THAT LITTLE GIRL KNOWS THAT THERE ARE TWO LITTLE GIRLS, LIKE HER, LIVING IN THAT PLACE. SO, I THINK FOR HER, IT CREATES A CONNECTION. SHE KNOWS THEM.

Reporter: DO THEY POP INTO THE OVAL OFFICE AT ALL?

OH, YEAH. THEY HAVE DONE THEIR POPPING.

Reporter: THEY HAVEN'T BROKEN ANYTHING IN THE HOUSE, HAVE THEY?

NO. WE'VE HAD SOME GUESTS WHO HAVE BROKEN THINGS. NOT THE KIDS. THEY KNOW WHO THEY ARE.

Reporter: THE GUESTS KNOW WHO THEY ARE. A COUPLE QUICK QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU GO. IT'S FROM OUR AUDIENCE. WHAT DOES SHE DO FOR RELAXATION
IN THE EVENING AWAY FROM THE PUBLIC?

I MUST CONFESS, SOMETIMES I CLICK ON SOME NONIMPORTANT TV AND JUST VEG OUT. I'M USUALLY ASLEEP RIGHT AFTER THE KIDS GO TO BED. I GET UP EARLY AND WORK OUT. THAT TENDS TO BE MY RELAXATION. IT HAPPENS IN THE MORNING.

She is a wonderfull woman she is smart and intelligent and she is going to do a lot of unforgetable things for this country; I hope we should pray for her and her husband. God bless you first Lady keep going.

Wait a minute. The kids are doing great because Michelle is there for homework time, etc. Then the next sentence she says that Grandma is doing the homework time and sneaking them extra desserts and basically being the mother.

I don't know how anyone can think that this woman is intelligent. She's just got the confidence of a narcissist.

And no, going to Princeton and Harvard proves nothing when you're an affirmative action student. She admits herself that she did not have the scores to qualify for these schools.

And no, I am not a "hater" who dislikes MO because she's black. I dislike suchshallow egoists of any race.

What she said is "when I'm gone all day" her mother helps with the homework, which means any other time she's doing it. Do people read before posting comments?!

Michelle is such an awesome role model for young girls of all races. Her confidence, dedication, and willingness to work hard is such a positive symbol for American girls.
Thank you President Barack Obama for falling in love with and marry such a wonderful woman.

If watching TV is the worse she does then we are ok. My idea of vegging out is grabbing my a bag of chips when i lay back and watch TV, try that Mrs. Obama. This presidency is not as awful as all think, he is actually having to clean up alot, so cut him some slack.
