Obama ribs Rahm Emanuel. "Everyday is a swearing-in ceremony."

CHICAGO--President Obama ribbed chief of staff and friend Rahm Emanuel Saturday at the Alfalfa Dinner. These dinners are marked by speeches that often are marked by self mockery and mockery of those around you. Obama's quips about Emanuel made note of his well known use of profanity.

Obama's zingers, as provided by excepts from the White House:

"Now, this hasn't been reported yet, but it was actually Rahm's idea to do the
swearing-in ceremony again. Of course, for Rahm, every day is a swearing-in
ceremony.

"But don't believe what you read. Rahm Emanuel is a real sweetheart.

No, it's true. Every week the guy takes a little time away to give back to the
community. Just last week he was at a local school, teaching profanity to poor
children."

Alfalfa Dinner

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Washington, DC

I am seriously glad to be here tonight at the annual Alfalfa dinner. I know
that many you are aware that this dinner began almost one hundred years ago as a
way to celebrate the birthday of General Robert E. Lee. If he were here with us
tonight, the General would be 202 years old. And very confused.

Now, this hasn⿿t been reported yet, but it was actually Rahm⿿s idea to do the
swearing-in ceremony again. Of course, for Rahm, every day is a swearing-in
ceremony.

But don't believe what you read. Rahm Emanuel is a real sweetheart.

No, it's true. Every week the guy takes a little time away to give back to the
community. Just last week he was at a local school, teaching profanity to poor
children.

But these are the kind of negotiations you have to deal with as President. In
just the first few weeks, I⿿ve had to engage in some of the toughest diplomacy
of my life. And that was just to keep my Blackberry. I finally agreed to limit
the number of people who could email me. It⿿s a very exclusive list. How
exclusive?

Everyone look at the person sitting on your left⿦ Now look at the person
sitting on your right⿦ None of you have my email address.

Obama shows he does indeed scrape the barrell for the best and brightest -- and those with the most expansive vocabulary.

But why didn't he discuss the most important personal criteria for selecting cabinet members and important advisers? Daschle, Geithner, Richardson = tax dodgers, influence peddlers, and insiders

I am so glad that he's standing up for middle America - are these the leaders by example we want and need?

Does anyone understand that the words 'profanity' and 'obscenity' do not mean the same thing? It is another of the many shames of the current occupant of the White House that he can joke about teaching profanity to children. Profanity is not a joking matter.

Naturally 'obscenity' is great fun... and very suitable for children.

Public Officals need to be awfully careful with humor.. in a few weeks tape of Rahm and Blagojevich may well become public and the public many not like what they hear.

Jokes like this will be thrown back at Obama.

It just wise to avoid comments like this on very serious stuff.

Tread carefully, Mr. Obama, with jokes like that. They just might border a little too closely to the TRUTH, especially with some of those Chicago-politicos… Believe it or not, a sizeable portion of America is really getting fed up with LOW-LIFES and GUTTERSNIPE, and joking & laughing about it just might strike some voters the wrong way. (You know, people tend to get a little humorless and touchy and thin-skinned when they lose their house, job, health care benefits, retirement pension, 401K account balance, and a lot of other things all in one or two short months…) So why don't you people knock off all the self-congratulatory, sophomoric humor and bad-taste joking, and GET BUSY AND BAIL OUT THE AMERICAN ECONOMY!!??
