Sunlight Foundation Calls for Online Public Scrutiny of Stimulus Legislation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 9, 2009

Contact: Gabriela Schneider 202/742-1520 ext 236

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the Sunlight Foundation issued a statement urging Congress to post the Stimulus legislation online for at least 72 hours bill before consideration. Additionally, Sunlight urged President Obama to post the final version of the bill passed by both the House and Senate for at least five days on WhiteHouse.gov.

The statement is online here, and is also below:

The Sunlight Foundation has long advocated that all legislation be posted online for at least 72 hours before final consideration. We believe that the consideration of the Stimulus Bill should not be an exception. While there is currently no formal requirement to do so, the House and Senate should each ensure that lawmakers and citizens alike have at least 72 hours of online access to the Stimulus Bill before its final consideration.

Further, because the scope and public import of this legislation demand a measured and transparent process we strongly urge President Obama to post the enrolled version of the bill on WhiteHouse.gov for five days before signing it, in accordance with his campaign promise. While access and feedback from the public after final passage is not as effective as providing online availability of legislation before final passage, it would still give the public an opportunity to make their views known to the president.

It is impossible for lawmakers to read, much less fully evaluate, any complex legislation that is hundreds of pages long in the few short hours they often have between the time they first see a bill until final consideration. Worse, citizens may not have access to legislation until after it has been voted on, too late for them to have a meaningful response to legislation that may directly affect their lives.

Online access to legislation for at least 72 hours before consideration should be universally adopted by both chambers of Congress. Legislation of such magnitude needs the scrutiny of both legislators and American citizens.

Here Here, Anything and everything considered by out government, for the people and by the people should be subject to at least a 5 day public review and comment, before the President can sign the bill into law. This should also, be the standard for executive orders, and the people business as a government.

Do you really think that their going to listen to us? huh!!!

Couldn't agree more. It seems like everything that's taken place since the inaguration has been "spun" as keeping us from going from "crisis to catastrophe". We rushed to get our Treasury Secretary approved because he was the only one that could turn things around in the troubled financial markets. His initial attempt was not as successful as we'd all hoped it would be. We all want this to work without selling out our children and grandchildren's futures. Let's take a couple extra days to allow everyone to digest the magnitude of this proposal. There is a difference between being an obstructionist and being responsible- the American public knows the difference.

Sincerely, Jeff Towns

Basically, Democracy respects the result following heated argument to seek fresh, productive, and progressive ideas, then now will be the time for bipartisanship to ensure success of the project for job generation and the 21st century infrastructure based on advanced science. If united, the world is certain to hail the democracy-driven, country-first decision thereafter, I believe.

NOW WE WANT TO PUT MORE ALPABETS IN THE SOUP,
LET'S GET ON WITH PROGRESS AND STOP FOOLING
OURSELVES, THE FORMER PRESIDENT DIDN'T EVEN WANT
TO ADMIT WE WERE IN A RECESSION, AND WE HE LEFT
OFFICE HE HAD THE AUDACITY TO SAY HE INHERITED
A RECESSION, WHICH WAS UNTRUE, NOW WE HAVE A REAL
WORKER ON PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE AND YOU GUYS WANT
THE PUBLIC TO READ A BILL AND WAIT 5 DAYS, FOR
WHAT, JOHN CONYERS TOLD YOU GUYS AWHILE BACK THAT
THE CONGRESS AND THE SENATE DON'T ACTUALLY READ
ENTIRE BILLS BEFORE THEY VOTE ON THEM, AND NOW
WE ARE REQUESTING THIS, FOR WHAT, KARL YOU MUST
BE A FAT CAT TO THINK THIS WAY!
LET'S GET ON WITH PROGRESS AND STOP THE DOG AND
PONY SHOW!
PRESIDENT OBAMA IS ON THE CASE!

WE are Broke! The Republican base voted out those Republicans that were on a spending spree, and now that we have ones that want to get back on the track to stop spending, 3 of them voted for this, and need to be shunned by the Republican Party!

For yrs. they talked about S.S. going broke, and nothing was done. They have robbed us blind. Now they extended SCHIP to illegal alien's kids, and force us to pay for condoms & abortions for foreigners!

Not to mention we are in hock to China, and lord only knows, what they will do to us in this financial war.

If Obama wanted jobs for Americans, then why did they not put in E-verify that would keep illegal aliens from getting those jobs? And why doesn't Pelosi stop yelling for more Visa workers?

It truly boggles the mind to see anyone smart enough to type support anything about this Democratic ripoff being called 'stimulus'.
We have a 1,000 page document, full of God knows what, that has been drafted by God who knows who, passing laws that God only who knows does what, and all done without the vast majority of people AND Congressmen even knowing what the first 20 pages contain.
And, God hasn't been reached for His comment yet.
The enemy is at the gates people, and they are mostly wearing grey suits.
This is taxation without representation, and is absolutely against the Constitution.

Oh wait, the mindless, brainwashed masses of the anti-educated have recently determined the Constitution is simply an 'outdated, archaic relic' of a bygone era. . .
You know, back when the People were expected to support THEMSELVES and fight for whats right, not simply demand whatever gives them a free ride through life at the expense of others.

AGAIN!

The reason for being in such a mad rush is that stealing must be done quickly!

To vote on anything without reading it is so incongruous as to defy all reason!

If 'government deficit spending' boosts the economy,
we would have been in excellent shape long before this.
Infrastructure upgrades are only 3.6% of the entire fiasco.
DEBT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS BILL

* Under the auspices of a “Comparative Effectiveness Review” the package heavily funds the first steps towards the government-mandated rationing of health care and tramples your right to medical privacy.

* The so-called “Stimulus Package” is being sold to taxpayers as an investment in useful infrastructure like roads and bridges. But the facts prove otherwise. Only 3.6% of the scheme’s $838 billion price tag would actually go to real, practical infrastructure projects--roads and bridges.

* This trillion-dollar debt and spending scheme will provide little or no stimulus, but will put each and every American household in at least $6,700 of new debt, to be paid by our children and grandchildren.

Congress is voting on this Stimulus Bill, June 26th while the rest of America's attention is on Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett. How convenient. Our little protection is being washed right down the drain- we will all be scrubbing the floor!
