VF ADVANCE: OBAMA ADMINISTRATION BY ANNIE LEIBOVITZ

For the cover of our annual Hollywood Issue Vanity Fair decided to forgo the usual movie stars in favor of history-and a man who, when he was elected as the 44th president of the United States, arguably became more famous than anyone who's ever graced our cover.

Nearly every key player in Obama's new administration, from the policy wonks to the whiz kids to the veteran advisers-56 people in all-were brought together for "Enter Obama," Vanity Fair's portfolio of the new administration, shot by Annie Leibovitz. The photos were taken between January 15 and January 21-a time when, as everyone knows, the subjects were awfully busy. Hillary Clinton came directly from being sworn in as secretary of state, and the economic team gave Leibovitz only a couple of minutes before racing off to their next meeting. Understandably, the new president was unable to sit for a portrait. Fortunately though, Obama had sat for Leibovitz in early 2007 for V.F.'s Africa issue, shortly after announcing his candidacy. We may not have been the only ones who had a hunch at that time....

But take a look at the June 1990 issue of Vanity Fair (or click on the link below) and you'll see someone you may not have recognized back then-a 28-year-old Barack Obama, featured after becoming the first African-American to be elected president of the Harvard Law Review.
