WASHINGTON--President-elect Barack Obama did NOT buy a $33,000 rhodium ring for wife Michelle, Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt said Tuesday morning, following reports in British papers that he did.

"No ring was purchased," said LaBolt.

The Daily Mail said the ring was being made by Italian designer Giovanni Bosco, to be ready by the Jan. 20 inauguration.

He'll put it on lay-away like other middle-class american husbands would do for their wives' gifts..

It looks like he hasn't paid for it yet. If it's being made, someone is paying for it !

The original story was so ridiculous in the first place. Wish the media would stop reporting such baseless nonsense.

It is not a big deal for a successful husband to buy a nice ring for his wife. She worked so hard to support her husband and children for so many years, she deserves it.

The 44th President of the United States of America certainly should buy his and our First Lady a ring of that magnitude. She certainly deserves it.
(Don't hate-it is soooo unattractive!)

Hey, He could buy FIVE of them if he returned Palin's clothes...Oh I am sorry, she is still wearing them!!!!

I suspect if Barack were doing something like this, he would be way discreet. It's none of our business.

Seriously people, Pickles wears ONE DIAMOND on that ugly a$$ necklace of her's (see photos of the only state dinner at Buckingham Palace showing Pickle's necklace) worth more than $40,000, the 3 carat emerald cut at the cleavage, and no one batted an eye.
Let Obama give his lady a nice ring and it's all "hypocrite" and "Spendthrift".
yet another example of the VRWC spin machine.

John, your color is maroon!

Palin returned all the clothes the RNC bought (for the entire family, btw), many unopened. Most used clothing went to charity.

She'd rather have worn her own, but deferred to Election Fashion experts.

American media is filled with mindless nonsense and this is an example of the trite garbage we are pesented with as news. Just think how much better off we would be, as a people, if we could all pretend to be a little better than we actually are, rather than taking a dive for the bottom.

If a Democrat in any way shape or form becomes successful and spends money, he or she is a hypocrite. Look how much criticism Edwards got for advocating for those left out in this economy while he had the nerve to spend money he earned on a big house. But wealthy Bush, son and grandson of privilege, has long been portrayed as just a regular guy on some ranch (not a mansion) clearing brush in his spare time. Sadly, the GOP has successfully labeled their opponents as elitists when the reverse is the truth, but the label has stuck and changed political discourse. Obama's been widely criticized on the right as a millionaire, well, folks, he earned almost all of that by work: he wrote books that people wanted to read.

all you stupid democrats got fooled! obama hides everything! thesis papers, birth certificates, shall i go on???

Lev,

The reason Dems are criticized for this behavior is that they denigrate Capitalism as the Great American Evil, they make lofty promises to stick it to the super-rich, sadly the poor and middle class buy their "I'm in your corner" hype, they rise to power, and immediately embrace the Capitalist ideals they purported to despise. I find it interesting that Obama is going to stick it to the rich, when he is himself rich...

It's called hypocracy, and as a general rule, people don't like to be led down the garden path.

Stop it! The man can buy what he wishes with HIS hard earned money. Even if they aren't buying it, the company may loan it to them (what jeweler would turn down the opportunity to make a ring for the first African American First Lady?)then auction it off later for profit or put it in a museum.

YOU NEED TO GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE!
PRESIDENT-ELECT OBAMA CAN'T GO TO THE LAVATORY
WITHOUT AN ESCORT AND YOU ARE WORRYING ABOUT A
RING FOR HIS WIFE, GIVE THE MAN SOME AIR AND WATCH
THE COUNTRY GET BACK ON TRACK!!
