CHARLOTTE, N.C.--The day before the presidential election, Barack Obama
and his half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng said Madelyn Dunham, their grandmother passed away after a battle with cancer. Obama traveled to Hawaii to visit with his ailing grandmother on Oct. 23 and 24. The woman Obama called "Toots" died at her Honolulu home near 4 a.m. eastern time. Obama was told near 8 a.m.

The campaign released a statement about Mrs. Dunham's death shortly after his campaign plane touched down in Charlotte, where Obama is en route to a rally, the second to last in his campaign.

Obama lived with maternal grandparents for a time during high school, while his mother remained in Indonesia.

The statement, released jointly from Obama Soetor-Nig said "It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer. She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility.

"She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.

"Our family wants to thank all of those who sent flowers, cards, well-wishes, and prayers during this difficult time. It brought our grandmother and us great comfort. Our grandmother was a private woman, and we will respect her wish for a small private ceremony to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to any worthy organization in search of a cure for cancer.

Hugs & Love,

Obama Soetor-Nig? Don't you mean Maya Soetoro-Ng?

My condolences goes out to the Obama family. Just before one of the biggest moments in Election history, the family is hit with some very sad news. I'm sure the family's lovely grandmother's last words were of peace, encourgement, and love. Similar to what my grandmother said to our family before she passed away.
'May God continue to Bless the Obama family during their breif moment of sadness and during the extended moment of happiness on their quest to the White House.'
Kind Regards,
Derrick

God Bless Mrs. Dunham and may she rest in peace. She was a solid rock for Barack Obama and we are grateful for her constant love and care for him.

Please work on the editing - there is a final "o" in Soetoro, and there is no "i" between the N and the g n Maya's name. Freudian slip?!

With that said, I'd like to express my condolences to the Dunham family and descendents for the loss of their matriarch. If only she could have held on for one more day.

To the family of the late Mrs. Madelyn Dunham, my prayers are with you in these difficult days.

God is with you. On the 4th your Grandmother has the best seat in the house, to watch her Grandson become America's next President. Best wishes to you and your family.

Senator Barack and family. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I know what it means to have a grandmother who loves you conditionally. Please know that your grandmother had already claimed greatness for you. She may not be with you tomorrow physically but she will always be with you spiritually. My grandmother BKA Bigmama was a great women. I have volunteered each and every time with my 11 year old daughter in honor of my grandmother. She is smiling once knowing that grandmothers work, love and tears was not in vain.

You are protected and annoited by God. You are the man that this world needs. I stand on tiptop waiting for tomorrow to come so that the announcement can be made that you will be the next President of the Unites States of America.

I stood in line for 2.5 hours in Richmond, Virginia so that I could tell my story about you. You are awesome. I pray that you and your family continue to do the work that God has placed on your heart along with Michelle.

God Bless you

LCT

Senator Obama...You have my utmost sympathy in the loss of your grandmother. Grandmother's, like mother's, are sometimes more special because they never fail to step in when the need causes them to do so. You were blessed that your Grandmother loved you so much. From my family to yours - we love you so much and will be praying for you Michelle, and your precious daughters God Bless You.

My deepest sympathy to the Obama Family... However, please keep in mind it's the SPIRIT that remains and TRAVELS and with that said, your Grandmother is NOW Cancer free and NOW closer to GOD than anyone of us and as you win the BIGGEST ELECTION in HISTORY tomorrow look above and don't forget to say THANK YOU GRANDMA because, she raised an amazing individual that gives Americans chills down our spine as you speak and WIN VICTORY on Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 and become the PRESIDENT. YOU DESERVE IT! This is an amazing ACCOMPLISHMENT in HISTORY and I hope to GOD you enjoy the excitement tomorrow as you become the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES "BARACK OBAMA". May GOD Always SHOWER YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WITH MANY BLESSINGS!

To Senator Barack Obama and Family,

I have enjoyed these past several months working in your campaign for the presidency. It is obvious that none of us endures solely on our own strength--you with your Grandmother's and me with the strength of Mae Francis', my mother. I share my condolences with you.

As sure as your Grandmother lives on in spirit above you, about you, around you, and within you . . .

Be safe, strong, and encouraged!

Oh ya.....finally get to see the WHITE half of his family. Same grandma and mom he tossed under the bus while he was busy being "black".

Ya....she WAS a great grandmother and mother who trudged the path..raised him and took all the flack for doing so.....yet the message never got through. Hey.....where exactly was the BLACK half this family during his up-bringing? Not present was it? Kind of like his voting. Go to where the winds take you. He needs a million "advisors" so he never has to take responsibility for his own decisions.

My husband said the only reason he got married was so he'd never have to be wrong again. LOL Not my fault.....she made me, she lied to me, she conned me....what ever excuse will do.

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.

(All appologies to George Harrison and his family for this.)

If you stand for nothing....you fall for anything. Obama hasn't STOOD firm on anything. He's dancing like the floor is full of hot potatoes.

Obamas Daddy was a head honcho in Africa and his fathers sister is illegal here? SHE fears for herself in Africa and her beloved nephew doesn't know anything about her? So much for "family values". So much for GLOBAL understanding. Guess these people figure a "close family" is something I don't define as the same. Is that why 1 drop of black blood makes you black but 99 drops of white blood doesn't make you white?

Heck I was stumped with the actual ancestors....let alone, half and quarter and second cousins removed and all the rest. Forget multiple husbands and wives and in-breeding and all the rest. Us white people were tossed in jail and killed years ago for doing that.

Guess we are all the same....we are each others brothers and sisters with that much breeding going on.

Dear Barack & Family,

We offer our sincerest condolences for the loss of your GrandMother.

God's Blessings to you and your family.

Warmest regards,

I will keep you and your family in my prayers. My grandparents raised me since I was a very little girl. I lost my grandfather about four years ago and it was very hard but to me it will never get easier. Just look up to the sky knowing that one you will be with her once again. My family and I will keep in our prayers and thoughts. I agree with everyone how wonderful you are going to be as our president. This is my first time voting and I am so excited to vote you in. Good Luck in everything that you do for our country. I know you will make a difference.

GRANDMOTHER TOOT RAISED A WINNER, MY DEEPEST
SYMPATHY AND GOD BLESS YOU, YOU ARE A BEACON OF
LIGHT FOR THE FUTURE OF AMERICA!
YOU WILL NEVER FORGET THE VILLAGE THAT RAISED
YOU SIR, YOU ARE A GREAT EXAMPLE OF WHAT HARD
WORK OF GROWTH FROM A BOY TO A MAN, WHAT CAN
OCCUR, YOUR FAMILY STORY IS ONE OF GREATNESS,
FROM KANSAS TO KENYA TO HAWAII TO INDONESIA TO
HAWAII AGAIN, TO CHICAGO!
GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!

condolences to Obama family. Let nothing demoralise or torn you in the walk of your journey of life. Be strong and continue the journey. God bless your family and all people in the world.

KW how ignorant of you to leave such a comment when the article is speaking of his grandmother. America can do without your ignorance! Hate of your form has been embarked on this country for to long.I would love to see your face when one of your children bring home someone darker than them and say meet your new son/daughter in law! I wish you many sleepless nights and may your blessings from God be blocked!

KW - It is sad for a human being to harvest so much ignorance and hatred in the heart. How can you look at yourself in the mirror each day and teach such ignorance to your family -- if you have one. I hope that one day God does not strike you or anyone in your family dead because of your hateful ways.

HE WAS BEING HONEST WHEN HE TOLD YOU HOW HIS
GRANDMOTHER WAS SCARED OF BLACK MEN, IF THAT IS
THROWING HER UNDER THE BUS THEN YOU WIN, BUT IT
ISN'T, YOU ARE PROBABLY SCARED OF BLACK MEN AS
WELL KW!
YOU GUYS CAN'T HANDLE HONESTY, YOU LIKE THE
DECEIVERS AND ROCK THROWERS IN LIFE, YOU DON'T
LIKE TO HEAR THE TRUTH, THE TRUTH WILL SET YOUR
RACIST BEHIND FREE!
YOU TOLD ON YOURSELF WHEN YOU SAID THE WORD WHITE
I TOO, HAD A WHITE GREAT-GRANDMOTHER I NEVER MET
HER BUT SHE IS MY RELATIVE, STOP BEING A CLOWN
AND GROW UP!
OBAMA IN A LANDSLIDE FOR GRANDMA TOOT!
