President-elect Barack Obama visited the Bronze Soldiers Memorial at Soldier Field this morning with Tammy Duckworth at his side.

Duckworth, director of the Department of Veterans Affairs for Illinois, lost both of her legs and partial use of one arm in the Iraq War.

According to pool reports, Obama, wearing a dark overcoat, picked up a wreath and placed it in front of the memorial and carried it a few feet forward, then set it directly in front of the bronze memorial. He then bowed his head for a moment, and saluted before walking away with Duckworth.

Obama issued the following statement:

"As we mark Veterans Day, all Americans are united in honoring the extraordinary service and selfless sacrifice of our nation's veterans. Our veterans are part of an unbroken line of heroes who have defended the American people and stood up for American values - from the beaches of Normandy to the battles in East Asia; from the deserts of Kuwait to the skies above Kosovo; from the cities of Iraq to the mountains of Afghanistan. Since 9/11, a new generation of American heroes has borne a heavy load in facing down the threats of the 21st century, and their families have been asked to bear the painful absence of a loved one. These Americans are the best and bravest among us, and they are all in our thoughts and prayers.

"On this Veterans Day, let us rededicate ourselves to keep a sacred trust with all who have worn the uniform of the United States of America: that America will serve you as well as you have served your country. As your next Commander-in-Chief, I promise to work every single day to keep that sacred trust with all who have served. May God bless our veterans, and may God bless the United States of America," said President-elect Barack Obama."

Looking at the pictures of Tammy Duckworth with the President-elect reminds me how sometimes we all take things like walking for granted, and get so absorbed in petty worries at times. Talk about guts and determination to go on in life. Thank you for your service and sacrifice Tammy.

TAMMY IS TOUGH, SHE HAS A BIG HEART, SHE IS A
WAR HERO, SHE REPRESENTS THE GREAT STATE OF
ILLINOIS WITH PRIDE!
HAPPY VETERAN'S DAY TO TAMMY DUCKWORTH!

Wow. No other comment is required.

To all those veterns who thought that Barack Obama wouldn't care about them, take a hike!!!

My father was a veteran of two wars Korea and Viet Nam, which he served to tours in Viet Nam. He made it through both wars, but unfortnately he didn't live to witness in his lifetime the first Black President of the United States. I know he would be as happy and joyful as all of us are today to see two great honorable people together Tammy Duckwoth and President Obama honoring all of our great veterans.

May God Bless and Keep the both of you.

The dead Veterans are the ones that we all owe our freedom to because Freedom is not Free!
I feel sad by the huge amount of lives that wil never enjoy the full benefits of the freedom that they so rightly deserved.

Go Obama!

one would never see the current president do such a thing.

happy 4th year of alive anniversary, Tammy!
And please Presd. Obama- keep all the ethnic people in the US and bring us up as one under God.

with all of this passion, it's a bit difficult to be honest about the fault behind all of this iraq war/die for freedom stuff. one can lose friends that way. nonetheless, i'd encourage a tad bit more thought to tossing around 'fighting for freedom' and such slogans, and take a closer look at what history unfolds. drag, painful, but real.this was/is a war of CHOICE, folks.

It is good to see that Obama is following Bush's great example and honoring veterans in a very heartfelt and real way like our current President always has.

How dare Obama salute he is not the president, YET> It has always ticked me off when a non military president Salutes.

SORRY YOU GOT TICKED OFF, PRESIDENT ELECT OBAMA
WAS TRYING TO BE RESPECTFUL, DON'T YOU THINK?
I DON'T THINK HIS GOAL HERE IN THE COLD WAS TO
BE DISRESPECTFUL!
I HOPE YOU HAD A GREAT VETERAN'S DAY!

I salute Tammy Duckworth for her bravery and courage and determination to go on... She is maimed, but not broken... her limbs are decimated but she has not collapsed or crippled.

President Elect Obama could not have chosen a better company/partner to honor veterans who are frequently foot-soldiers in good policy and bad policy executions.

I was thoroughly moved upon seeing Tammy Duckworth and Mr. Obama's picture (the embrace) in a New York City newspaper.

I doff my hat!

Most sincerely,
Paul I. Adujie
New York, United States

I certainly hope that there is room in the 'Big Tent' of the new administration for the courageous likes of Tammy Duckworth. She is an American to be proud of for her compassion and wisdom in looking after the interests of our veterans.

Here's hoping that the governor appoints Tammy to succeed Pres-elect Obama in the Senate.

Go Ladda!

Let us hope that Tammy can be of some help to our Veteran. They need it more than people are aware. Most people think McCain was a hero, NOT SO, according to many, many official Veterans websites. So as a war veteran I hope that if she becomes a Senator she ACTUALLY WILL be of some HELP to Veterans. Clearly she is a qualified spokesperson for them.

To all those veterns who thought that Barack Obama wouldn't care about them, take a hike!!!

While I was out hiking it be came clear to me that Obama couldn't pass up a photo op like this. He will do nothing fore veterans. He is discussed by men and women in uniform. Keep drinking your Kool Aid

PRESIDENT ELECT OBAMA WAS THE MAN WHEN HE WAS A
SENATOR WHO SIGNED LEGISLATION THAT VETERAN'S
AT WALTER REED WOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY FOR MEALS
AND PHONE CALLS, WHEN HE LEARNED THIS WAS GOING
ON, THE 44TH PRESIDENT WILL BE A FRIEND TO ALL
VETERANS!
ASK TAMMY DUCKWORTH SHE KNOWS WHAT A QUALITY
PERSON PRESIDENT ELECT OBAMA TRUELY IS!
P.S. HE WASN'T LOOKING FOR A PHOTO-OP!

Tammy might not get the vacated Senatorial seat, but, at the federal level, she could become Deputy, Veterans Affairs Administrator Then, in Obama's second term, take over the top job.

I am merely one civilian who had selfish reasons to be excited about Obama and Major Duckworth quietly laying a wreath on Veterans Day. It has been just one year since both of my legs were smashed off above the knee by a drunk driver. I was a pedestrian loading swimming gear into the trunk. Unisured, I went in seconds from professional to "welfare patient" with 50/50 odds of survival, After two months of uninsured hospitalization and months of struggle to receive rehabilitation, I saw in Tammy Duckworth what can happen for me! I hope in three years to be walking too. Now I see someone who has done it, albeit with help.
My wheelchair cannot make it to the graves of my mom and Dad at Willamette National Cemetery. I honor ALL VETERANS, deceased or living, whole or maimed. Civilians cannot know the complexities of any military involvement. Civilians may have and voice opinions, a priviledge for which blood has been shed.

TO YVONNE, READ YOUR BLOG I HOPE YOU GET TO MEET
TAMMY DUCKWORTH ONE DAY, I'M GLAD SHE IS AN
INSPIRATION TO YOU, SHE IS TO ME AS WELL, AND
YVONNE I HOPE YOU WILL AGAIN LIKE TAMMY IS DOING!
I THINK ALL THE VETERANS ARE GREAT PEOPLE!
MY TWO OLDER SONS ARE VETERANS!

Thank you, Phil, for your feedback. I went to Tammy Duckworth.com and learned we share some basic traits of determination and purity of purpose which is what keeps me strugling out here on the West Coast. I do hope to meet Tammy Duckworth one day, and I hope I will be on c-Legs that day! I hope your sons are healthy and well, my care provider is a veteran going back to the seventies, she tries to bring me news from the local VA, their magazines feature the latest in adaptive equipment, hope for the future. That is what is so touching about the photo of the president elect and Tammy Duckworth, it speaks of hope, not dispair, honor, not ridicule, respect of peace rather than glorifying war.
