WASHINGTON--The Obama girls, their mom and grandmother are checking out their new home on Tuesday afternoon, visiting the White House residence at the invitation of First Lady Laura Bush.
Last week, Michelle Obama and Laura Bush toured the residence and associated living space while President-elect Obama and President Bush met.
Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7 have been in Washington since Sunday night checking out new schools with their mother. Michelle's mom, Marion Robinson, who will move to Washington with the incoming First Family is also with the family.
Obama spokesman Katie McCormick Lelyveld told me, "The First Lady graciously invited Mrs. Obama, her mother and the girls to visit what will be their new home. Of
course, Mrs. Obama greatly appreciated this invitation to provide an opportunity
for the girls to feel at home and be comfortable in this transition process."

I look at those adorable happy little girls and think they just don't know how lucky they are to be in an stable secure intact black family, which seems to be rare these days. It seems as though having 2 responsible reliable stable secure parents is a privilege in the black family and not a right.
Many parents chose private schools to shield their kids from the pathology of public schools.They fear that the kids there will negatively influence their kids and the kids bad behavior will rub off on them.

Much like President Carter, Obama should send his daughters to a DC public school. Given that the District spends well over $20,000 on each student, surely they are great schools, right?

It is nice to see the Obama family actually prepare for the demands of State by having Grandma move in to watch the girls while Mom and Dad are called away. This way the girls will always have a family member home to be with them instead of a constant rotating staff of nannies.
And while the idea of public school is nice- can you imagine the burden that ensuring the girls safety would place on the already underfunded public schools? Better to send them to a private school where their safety can be better controlled. That's what many elected officials do, and it's more about common sense than school quality.

Susan-- While I agree with your sentiment about choosing private schools for security reasons, I'm pretty sure it's not the reason they're there. I support their right to put their kids in private schools. And they can afford to pay the tax for public schools AND still send them there. They WILL get a better education (the many religious based private schools notwithstanding, generally students at private schools DO come out better). I just wish all of us could bypass that "public school tax" if we wished out kids could go to private schools. My mother was a public school teacher. That's why she wanted me in a private school. It took help from my grandmother to pay for it, but it shouldn't have to be that hard for people who care about their kids' futures. Hopefully the Obama administration will consider this fact and help promote vouchers, etc, so more "average" people (i.e. in my case, someone whose mother is a public school teacher and thus not very well paid, can still have that option of private school even if they don't have a grandmother willing to foot the bill, which I'm sure is the exception rather than the rule) can attend better schools of their choice.

I am quite tired of people complaining about paying for school taxes if they don't have children going to public schools. Get over it.
Do you drive on every road your taxes pay for? Do you expect the police and fire and ambulance to only go to a taxpayer's house? Not everyone needs all the things all the time.
The way you GET future emergency & protective staff is to educate them. The simplest way is for all of us to pitch in and help everyone's kids get the best education they can.
I went to private schools, and barely got an education. I would have been better served in a public school. My parents did pay the property tax because THAT'S WHAT GROWN UPS DO.
