Malia and Sasha Obama visiting the White House this afternoon to check out their new home

WASHINGTON--The Obama girls, their mom and grandmother are checking out their new home on Tuesday afternoon, visiting the White House residence at the invitation of First Lady Laura Bush.

Last week, Michelle Obama and Laura Bush toured the residence and associated living space while President-elect Obama and President Bush met.

Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7 have been in Washington since Sunday night checking out new schools with their mother. Michelle's mom, Marion Robinson, who will move to Washington with the incoming First Family is also with the family.

Obama spokesman Katie McCormick Lelyveld told me, "The First Lady graciously invited Mrs. Obama, her mother and the girls to visit what will be their new home. Of
course, Mrs. Obama greatly appreciated this invitation to provide an opportunity
for the girls to feel at home and be comfortable in this transition process."

I look at those adorable happy little girls and think they just don't know how lucky they are to be in an stable secure intact black family, which seems to be rare these days. It seems as though having 2 responsible reliable stable secure parents is a privilege in the black family and not a right.

Many parents chose private schools to shield their kids from the pathology of public schools. They fear that the kids there will negatively influence their kids and the kids bad behavior will rub off on them.

Another sign of how great a country we live in -- outgoing 1St Lady invites incoming 1st Lady for a second round of house visiting.

God Bless Laura Bush and Michelle Obama! Two great women...

Boy, with Grandma living there too, it'll seem just like the beverly hillbilly's

Uh-oh, there goes the neighborhood...

Much like President Carter, Obama should send his daughters to a DC public school. Given that the District spends well over $20,000 on each student, surely they are great schools, right?

Yep, and gun control works, too.

What???? There goes the neighborhood - How ignorant are you? If Mrs. Robinson decides to move to the White House with them, it in no way compares to the beverly hillbilly's

It is nice to see the Obama family actually prepare for the demands of State by having Grandma move in to watch the girls while Mom and Dad are called away. This way the girls will always have a family member home to be with them instead of a constant rotating staff of nannies.

And while the idea of public school is nice- can you imagine the burden that ensuring the girls safety would place on the already underfunded public schools? Better to send them to a private school where their safety can be better controlled. That's what many elected officials do, and it's more about common sense than school quality.

Well, it's seemed like the Beverly Hillbillys for the past eight years.
I have prayed to the Lord God to thank him for blessing this country with the Obama family.

How gracious of Mrs. Bush! With the addition of the Obamas, the neighborhood is looking a whole lot better.

Susan-- While I agree with your sentiment about choosing private schools for security reasons, I'm pretty sure it's not the reason they're there. I support their right to put their kids in private schools. And they can afford to pay the tax for public schools AND still send them there. They WILL get a better education (the many religious based private schools notwithstanding, generally students at private schools DO come out better). I just wish all of us could bypass that "public school tax" if we wished out kids could go to private schools. My mother was a public school teacher. That's why she wanted me in a private school. It took help from my grandmother to pay for it, but it shouldn't have to be that hard for people who care about their kids' futures. Hopefully the Obama administration will consider this fact and help promote vouchers, etc, so more "average" people (i.e. in my case, someone whose mother is a public school teacher and thus not very well paid, can still have that option of private school even if they don't have a grandmother willing to foot the bill, which I'm sure is the exception rather than the rule) can attend better schools of their choice.

IT IS GOOD THEY ARE GETTING TO SEE WHERE THEY WILL LIVE IN ADVANCE. PRAY FOR THEM AND THEIRS PARENTS.PRIVATE SCHOOL IS THE WAY TO GO. PUBLIC SCHOOL WOULD BE TO MUCH TO KEEP THEM SAFE

I think that private schools are

Grammar: Learn it.
Caps Lock: Cruise control for stupid.

THE SAFETY ISSUE IS OVER-HYPED, IT'S ABOUT KEEPING
THE YOUNGSTERS IN THE SAME ROUTINE THEY ARE IN
NOW, THEY ATTEND PRIVATE SCHOOL NOW!
THEY WILL BE ATTENDING ANOTHER PRIVATE SCHOOL IN
ANOTHER CITY, BECAUSE GUESS WHAT, THEIR DADDY
JUST BECAME THE 44TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED
STATES!
CAPS LOCK BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT I DO!
READ AND LEARN, READING IS FUNDAMENTAL!
PLEASE ALLOW THIS SPECIAL FAMILY TO ADJUST TO
THEIR NEW HOME, NEW CITY, NEW RESPONSIBILITIES!
TO THE TEACHER WHO WANTS VOUCHERS, DO YOU REALLY
THINK THAT A VOUCHER IS GOING TO GET YOUR CHILD
IN ONE OF THESE PRIVATE SCHOOLS?

I am quite tired of people complaining about paying for school taxes if they don't have children going to public schools. Get over it.

Do you drive on every road your taxes pay for? Do you expect the police and fire and ambulance to only go to a taxpayer's house? Not everyone needs all the things all the time.

The way you GET future emergency & protective staff is to educate them. The simplest way is for all of us to pitch in and help everyone's kids get the best education they can.

I went to private schools, and barely got an education. I would have been better served in a public school. My parents did pay the property tax because THAT'S WHAT GROWN UPS DO.

Quit whining about it. If you don't like the public school, go become a teacher and make it better.

TELL US WHAT PRIVATE SCHOOL YOU ATTENDED, SO WE
WON'T SEND OUR CHILDREN, SINCE YOU SAY YOU DIDN'T
LEARN ANYTHING!
MY PARENTS SENT US TO PRIVATE SCHOOLS BECAUSE THE
PUBLIC SCHOOL IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD WAS OVERCROWDED!
SEE YOU AT THE INAGURATION!

um excuse me, but the obama's are nothing but something to laugh at, no matter what kind of school they go to. god forbid barack obama's kids didint get a high quality ELEMENTARY education. idiots. have fun the next four years cause after that you will be gone.

Sasha Obama is the younger daughter of U.S. president Barack Obama. Her formal name is Natasha, but she is most often called by her nickname, Sasha. She was born in 2001 to Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, who were married in 1992. Sasha has one older sister, Malia, who was born in 1998. Both girls attended the private University of Chicago Laboratory Schools in Chicago until January of 2009, when they began attending Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. Sasha entered the second grade in 2008. Her father became president on 20 January 2009.

Name at birth: Michelle LaVaughn Robinson

Michelle Obama is the wife of U.S. president Barack Obama. She is also a lawyer and a former Chicago city administrator and community outreach worker. Reared in a blue-collar home on Chicago's South Side, she was an associate at a law firm when she met Obama; he was a summer intern and she was assigned to advise him. She has worked in the offices of Chicago's mayor and its planning commission, headed a career-training program for young adults and directed community affairs for the University of Chicago and its medical center. She caught the eye of a national audience at her husband's side after he delivered a high-profile speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004 and then was elected that year to the U.S. Senate. In 2007 she scaled back her own professional work to attend to family and campaign obligations during Obama's run for president. She took her turn as a speaker on the opening night of the 2008 Democratic convention, and her husband was elected president on 4 November 2008. She became First Lady with his inauguration on 20 January 2009.

Name at birth: Barack Hussein Obama II

Barack Obama is the 44th president of the United States and the first African-American president in American history. Obama has spoken often of his multicultural background: his father was from Kenya, his mother from Kansas, and they met at the University of Hawaii. After his parents divorced and his father returned to Africa, Obama stayed with his mother and was raised in Indonesia and Hawaii. He earned an undergraduate degree from Columbia University in 1983 and a law degree from Harvard in 1991. He then joined the Chicago law firm of Miner, Barnhill & Galland, which specialized in civil rights legislation. He also taught constitutional law for 12 years at the University of Chicago. Obama was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996, and then to the U.S. Senate in 2004, beating Republican candidate Alan Keyes.

Obama shot to national fame after delivering a stirring keynote speech in support of John Kerry at the 2004 Democratic national convention. Obama ran for president in 2008, defeating a Democratic primary field that included New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, the former First Lady. He named Delaware senator Joe Biden to be his running mate at the Democratic Convention that August, and they defeated Republican nominees John McCain and Sarah Palin in the November general election. They took office on 20 January 2009. Obama published the personal memoir Dreams from My Father in 1995, and published a second book, The Audacity of Hope, in 2006. The title of the latter book was also the title of his 2004 keynote speech, and both books won Grammys for best spoken word album. Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

Extra credit: Obama married the former Michelle Robinson in 1992. They have two daughters: Malia (b. 1998) and Sasha (b. 2001)... Obama's father, also named Barack Obama, was black; his mother, Ann Dunham, was white. Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham (nicknamed "Toot"), died the day before Obama was elected in 2008... Obama attended Occidental College in Los Angeles before completing his undergraduate degree at Columbia... Obama's Senate website described him as "the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review" and "the third African American since Reconstruction to be elected to the U.S. Senate." The previous African-American senators elected by popular vote were Edward Brooke (1967-79, from Massachusetts) and Carol Moseley-Braun (1993-99, from Illinois). Two other African-Americans were chosen by state senates to become U.S. Senators: Hiram Revels (1870-71, from Mississippi) and Blanche Bruce (1875-81, also from Mississippi)... His 2008 Grammy for The Audacity of Hope beat books by two former presidents: Bill Clinton's Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World and Jimmy Carter's Sunday Mornings in Plains: Bringing Peace to a Changing World.

Malia Ann Obama is the oldest daughter of Barack Obama, the former senator from Illinois who became president on 20 January 2009. Malia was born in 1998 to Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, who were married in 1992. Malia and her younger sister Sasha attended the private University of Chicago Laboratory Schools in Chicago. Malia entered the fifth grade in 2008; she and her sister began attending Sidwell Friends School in January of 2009 after her family moved to Washington, D.C. for her father's inauguration.

Extra credit: Many sources list Malia's birth year as 1999. However, she was widely reported to be celebrating her 10th birthday in July of 2008, while her father was campaigning for president. In a video interview with Access Hollywood that year, Barack Obama can be heard joking with Malia that she "started in a hospital on [the] Fourth of July ten years ago

Marian Robinson is 71-years-old and the mother of future First Lady Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, the men’s basketball coach at Oregon State University (Beavers). Marian retired from her part-time job at a bank last summer.

She lives off the pension of her late husband, Fraser Robinson, who died in 1991, the year before Barack and Michelle were married. Fraser was a city-water plant employee and Democratic precinct captain. He had also been a boxer and was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age 30. Marian has held various secretarial jobs throughout her life, at one point at a Spiegel’s catalog store. She lives 10 minutes away from the President-elect and his family in a predominately black neighborhood on Chicago’s South Shore.

While her daughter and son-in-law were on the campaign trail, Robinson cared for her grandchildren, Malia, a 5th grader, and Sasha, a 2nd-grader and kept them on the schedule their mother has designed. She is vocal about her daughters insistence of healthy foods and strict bed time (8:30) and television limits (1 hour).

But like a good grandmother should, she breaks all the rules when the girls come to her house.

Malia is awesome she is like asister to me.
