Obama confuses "Sanford and Son" with "The Jeffersons"

RALEIGH, N.C.--Barack Obama seemed to mix up black television sitcoms "Sanford and Son" and "The Jeffersons" in a speech Wednesday, where he was making the point that if Social Security had ever been privatized--as Republicans tried to do a few years ago, folks invested in the stock market would have been whacked with giant losses because of the economic meltdown.

"Can you imagine if you had your Social Security invested in the stock market these last two weeks, these last two months.

You wouldn't need Social Security. You'd be having a, ya know like Sanford and Sons, 'I'm coming Weezy."

One of Fred Sanford's signature lines was 'I'm coming Elizabeth."

Weezy was the nickname for Louise Jefferson.

Obama departed from his prepared remarks in making the Sanford reference

So, what? Lynn Sweet, what is your point?
I'm an African/American and I grew up in
watching these black sitcoms during the
1970's and 1980's, very few whites dared to
mention them...let alone, watch them.
I, myself and many other blacks have forgotten
some of these characters and may at times, confuse them as well. Its not as if they are getting any Prime-time airing these days.

Believe me, to most Americans its not big deal, if Obama or any other African/American confuses these played-out characters.
but thank you!

OMG....there is NO WAY this socialist/communist/marxist can be president of the United States.

Mixing up Weezie and Elizabeth?

Are you serious?

If it's not on the teleprompter, he doesn't get it right.

Okay, big deal he mixed the names up. I sure the point was understood.

Actually the Redd Foxx character's name on Sanford & Son was Fred Sandford not George Sanford. George was the first name of lead character on The Jeffersons. If I was Fred Sanford I would give you "5 across the lips" for messing up my name like that but I guess we all get mixed up sometimes.

My conscience will not allow me to vote for a candidate who mixes up two of our most treasured TV institutions.

It's like mixing up Saved By The Bell with Head of the Class.

It shows that Mr. Obama perhaps has better things to do than sit in front of a TV. I'm disappointed and appalled.

I demand an apology on behalf of my extended TV family.

See what happens when he doesn't read what someone else wrote for him?

Gosh, I wonder if he thinks he can just be "present" in the White House too?

God help us all if this man got enough voters to drink his Kool Aid. McCain/Palin '08!

God Bless Senator Obama. Jessee Jackson Sr. had this same problem with Mr. Obama.
This is a mistake the brothers from the street would not make, even we never saw "Elizabeth". While he is not from the streets, Mr. Obama is still the Man.
Mr. J. J. knew Mr. Obama had no street sense & thought he was talking down to the brothers. Mr. Jacksons big mistake is he got caught speaking his personal feeling on Tape, when he should have meet with Mr. Obama to air his feelings.

That does not seem to be a big deal. Sometimes we are too critical of people and that criticism drives off a lot of brilliant prospective presidential candidates. People also take things out of context, just like they did with VP Chaney at poclt.com. It was President Bush they mentioned not VP Chaney.

Been funny if Webster walked out and said 'what chew talkin bout Barry?'

then snorted a line with him. rotflmao wink

Is this really an issue or even important enough to write about? Give me a break. I will be glad when this election is over.

No! That does it...I am now voting for McPailin!

(sarcasm)

Your desperation isn't very becoming Lynn Sweet.

I'm wondering which hangover would be worse, the one after playing a McCain "my friends" drinking game, or an Obama "ya know" drinking game.

Redd Foxx DID provide memorable economic advice: "I went to the store and candy was two for a quarter. I asked the owner, 'How much for one?' He said, 'Fifteen cents.' I said, 'I'll take the other one.'"

Hey, Obama is starting to sound like Bush! You know if this was McCain, the liberal media would be all over him as being "out of touch".

what is wrong with these people.Who cares about a sitcom what about health care and the economy

I don't think he was mixed up much. I remember Fred Sanford always saying he felt "a big one coming on" when something he didn't like was happening. Maybe Obama was remembering that.....

Big deal -- I'm glad his head isn't chock full of TV sitcom trivia!

And I know a racist-tending white person or so who just LOVES Sanford & Son and knows all about the characters, in kind of a creepy way.

Barack Hussein Obama is not does not come
from the same background, as most African Americans.

Few African Americans would have confused
those characters.

Barack Hussein Obama is mixed race,
his Dad was an African from Kenya.
He spent some of his formative years
in his stepfather's homeland, Indonesia.
How many black sitcoms were on Indonesian television.

If Barack Hussein Obama were your typical
African American, with the confrontational
attitude, like his wife, Michelle Obama,
he wouldn't have come within striking distance
of the Whitehouse.

Just ask Jesse Jackson.

Barack Hussein Obama was raised very
differently from his wife, Michelle Obama.

She would have gotten those characters right.

I do think that Barack Hussein Obama,
makes a far superior candidate than
John Sidney McCain for the Presidence
of the United States.

McCain would have confused "Ozzie and Harriet" with "My Three Sons". That Beaver.....

I sure hope that the next President I'm voting for has better things to be concerned about than getting TV characters straight. To graduate with honors in jurisprudence is a lot more important for being the leader of our country. Get your priorities straight, please! To uphold the Constitution, I'd like someone to be familiar with it. Have you even read the U.S. Constitution or the Bill of Rights? I'm sure Obama has. Probably knows it by heart. I suspect those sitcoms were not written by any brothers anyway...I want a President who is smarter than me and for sure smarter than you! Obama in 2008 and 2012. Let's keep a good thing going! It's time voters stopped looking at Presidential Candidates like contestants on American Idol, don't you think? This is a lot more important.

I DON'T THINK A GUY WHO HAS A LAW DEGREE FROM
HARVARD ACTUALLY WATCHED EITHER SHOW ANYWAY!
IT IS NO BIG DEAL, LIKE HE SAYS PARENTS SHOULD
TURN OFF THE TV SET, TURN OFF THE VIDEO GAMES,
AND READ TO THEIR CHILDREN!
THAT'S WHY HIS TWO CHILDREN ARE ON TRACK TO DO
GREAT THINGS, THEY HAVE TO EDUCATED PARENTS WHO
READ TO THEM AND LIMIT THE TIME THEY WATCH THE
TUBE!
BARACK OBAMA HAS RUN A GREAT CAMPAIGN AND EVEN
JOHN MCCAIN KNOWS THAT!

Every brother is not a brother.

Seriously? This is your commentary? You've GOT to be kidding me? The man probably hasn't had a good nights sleep in over 2 years you think his main concern in his speeches is making the right sitcom references....this is a ridiculous waste of my time....i can't even believe i just commented on it. Oh and for those of you who think that you can't have a law degree and be up on pop culture...you're nuts too.

Hey George Jarret, grow up and get a life.

THAT'S A LIE ABOUT MICHELLE OBAMA, HER MOM AND
DAD RARELY ALLOWED THEM TO WATCH TELEVISION, YOU
ARE WAY OUT OF LINE ON THAT REMARK, SHE ATTENDED
WHITNEY YOUNG HIGH SCHOOL, PRINCETON FOR UNDERGRAD
AND HARVARD FOR LAW SCHOOL, YOU NEED TO GET YOUR
FACTS STRAIGHT AND THINK BEFORE YOU BLOG, THAT'S
WHY OBAMA IS BETTER THAN MCCAIN, HE DOESN'T SPEAK
AND THEN THINK, LIKE YOU DID IN YOUR BLOG!
THAT WAS A VERY RACIST REMARK, AND YOU SHOULD BE
ASHAMED OF YOUR RACIST SELF!

Get over it!!! One would think Lynn Sweet had something bigger on the Pesident to report....Reload try again please!!!! If that is all the man did hell...good... Who cares what they watched!!! They made it...they are smart and they are doing the damn thing. We cloud our minds with little stuff....Hey!!!
Lynn Sweet Its July 2009 ...Lets talk about Sandford the Governer LOL!!! Im sure Obama or no one else will get this wrong. He is a lieing cheating ...wont say it , but what do you thing he was watching when he grew up that made him screw up?

WHAT A TOOL!
