Mayor Daley concerned about Obama election night rally costs.

My Chicago Sun-Times colleague, ace city hall reporter Fran Spielman was just at a press conference in City Hall in Chicago where Mayor Daley was asked about the costs of the city services associated with Barack Obama's election night rally at Grant Park, expected to draw thousands to the lakefront for the historic event.

The mayor asked about the Obama rally said, "That's what we are talking about."

Asked if he has a price tag yet, Daley said, "That will be the issue."

Daley decoder Spielman tells me that Daley's comment indicates that there are discussions going on--or will be-- between City Hall and the Obama campaign about the rally costs.

Chicago is hardly in any position to pay for any of this.

Daley charges the Bears, the Cubs, the Bulls, the Blackhawks and the White Sox an hourly fee to reimburse the city for traffic control enforcement during games. They pay $18.25 per hour for every traffic aide assigned to their events, to go up to next year.

Daley is grappling with a $465 million deficit and has just proposed a budget that lays off 929 city workers and raises amusement and parking taxes and a laundry list of fees.

ombama's campaign has plenty of cash to fund the election night historic event

I'm sure that the Obama Campain has the resource to pay for it, I no that the city of Chicago need the money with a #465 Million dollors deficit, And be careful because the Obama Campain can go to another town with easy, And again the people of Chicago would miss out on a part of history that could has been good for the town,

WHY HES GOT ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD- CHARGE HIS CAMPAIGN, THEY CAN AFFORD IT

Senator Obama, please don't give a rally at Grant Park. Chicago do not have enough money to pay for such an extravagant historical event for its citizens. Remember we are trying to attract the 2016 Olympics NOT the FIRST PRESIDENT from this Great City.

Understand Mr. Obama, it is easier for graft, backroom deals for contracts which politicians feel are fair to give three to five percent of the total government contracts from the city to a population which is well over 35 percent. Some of these politicians and their constinuents will say the people are lazy but not admit if reviewing the population totals why is one group more heavily politically connected than the other. Matter of fact it even includes individuals who are not necessarily citizens of America.

Population from 2000

White 1,215,315 41.97%
Black or African American 1,065,009 36.77%

My apologies to Spanish speaking Chicagoans - but some fall under two catergories and not sure which to choose. Please correct and add your numbers where feasible.

I don't know one person who works as a traffic aide and makes $18.75/hr. That is a fairly decent wage even for a college graduate for the first three to seven years after leaving college if not able to acquire work in their respective field of study.

I am just saying!

Obama For America will have plenty of money left over after the election .. I am sure that they and the Democratic Party will be more then willing to reimburse Chicago.

Douglas makes an excellent point...Chicago wants to host the Olympics in 2016, yet they can't handle a Grant Park rally? lol...sounds a bit ridiculous to me! If Obama tried to have his rally anywhere else, people would be up in arms. No matter what it's always d@mned if you do, d@mned if don't.

What's wrong with a PARTY? Would be the best money the city's spent in a WHILE seems to me.

Someone needs to tell Douglas that President Reagan lived in Chicago when he was about 4 years old. He was the first president from Chicago, not Obama.

Perhaps some of the charges to the media to cover the event are going to the city for services.

The City should charge a non refunable down payment of half of What Daley offered.

We all know Obama owes the City of Chicago and could never ever repay them.

THE OLYMPICS IS ONE THING, OBAMA MANIA IS ANOTHER
BARACK CAN REALLY DRAW A CROWD!
DON'T WORRY BARACK WILL PAY FOR EVERYTHING, HE
IS A QUALITY GUY!

I wish I could go home after work and then come back into the city for the rally, but know that on a work night, it's unrealistic for me to plan to do something like that. But to be a part of history in the making would be fantastic, up close and personal. I hope all the party goers have a fantastic time and I sincerely hope it's for victory!

As demonstrated by this conversation, this rally certainly raises a LOT of questions/issues about the Olympics in Chicago. Head over to www.chicago2016.com to see more on the economic impact of the games in Chicago. Chicago2016.com is NOT the official website of the Chicago 2016 Olympic Bid Committee. That site is located at chicago2016.org.
