When did Obama know about Ayers terrorist background? My search for Ayers and Dohrn

NASHVILLE--Since the McCain campaign has resurfaced the matter of Barack Obama's relationship with Bill Ayers--the former terrorist now Chicago education professor---there are some matters I am curious about. I say this as one who has explained time and again in print and on television Ayers, by the time Obama met him in the 1990s, was a respected academic who was welcome into Chicago's civic life.

On Monday, Obama chief strategist David Axelrod said Obama was not aware of Ayers' terrorist background when he attended a political coffee at Ayers Hyde Park home at the beginning of his state senate race sometime in the fall of 1995. Ayers and Obama first crossed paths in 1995 while involved in the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, a foundation dealing with urban education issues.

So the question is--I'm just curious and I wonder about this as one who has defended Obama's association with Ayers, the education expert (not Ayers, the terrorist)---when did Obama finally learn about the Weather Underground background of Ayers and his wife Bernardine Dohrn?

As a young reporter working in Chicago, I was well aware of the Weather Underground couple on the lam from the law; Ayers father ran the local electrical utility company and was a big shot in the city. But this was years before Obama came to Chicago. As a rookie at the Sun-Times I tried to find Ayers and Dohrn working some connections, but nothing ever panned out and eventually they surrendered in Chicago in 1981.

I asked Obama chief strategist David Axelrod on Tuesday afternoon here when and how Obama learned about Ayers and Dohrn and their days with the violent radical 1960s group.

Axelrod offered no details and needed to move on to his next interview, since he was in high demand in the media filing center at Belmont University, where the second presidential debate will be held between Obama and John McCain.

Turns out ABC's Jake Tapper was also curious about when Obama learned about Ayers violent past and pressed Axelrod on the subject during a Tuesday interview.

"Not that there's been any clear explanation of this relationship forthcoming from the Obama campaign," Tapper wrote on his ABC blog, Political Punch.

"So, when did Obama find out that Ayers had been a member of an organization the FBI called a "domestic terrorist" group, and had been, for years, a fugitive from the law?

"I don't know," Axelrod said and Tapper reported.

"I mean it was sometime after their first meetings. And you know, he became aware of it. I don't know the exact moment."

He wasn't aware of who "Ayers" was?

"Yeah," Axelrod said, "I mean, the fact is that like a lot of people who, you know, didn't live through that era -- particularly those who didn't live though that era in Chicago -- It just wasn't. I mean, when he came to Chicago, Ayers was advising Mayor Daley on school reform issues, and that was his profile, was that he was an expert on education."

So, did he know who Ayers was when he went to his home in 1995?

"My understanding is that when he went there, he did not," Axelrod said.

Reporters noticed that clause -- "my understanding is" -- and pressed further. Did Axelrod ask Obama if he knew Ayers' history when he first met with him?

"Yes," Axelrod said.

And he did not know?

"Yes," Axelrod said. "That's what I've said -- I answered the question when I was asked the other day. But no one's suggesting that he never knew. I mean that's not -- we weren't offering that. I wasn't offering it -- I was asked a question that you just asked me and just answered it. I wasn't making an argument about it."

I'm not arguing either. I'm just curious.

Seems like a huge issue that goes beyond just being a "curiosity" query. My vote may depend on the answer to when he knew about Ayer's unpatriotic background activities.

Once upon a time I met someone who would later become a friend. At the time of meeting him, he seemed well spoken, had made great strides in his community. He supported acts to reform domestic violence, assisted the elderly, worked in soup kitchens from time to time.

He was quite a wonderful being. Turns out however, when I was young, I was naive and trusting. I let the man into my home, and while he has done nothing out of the ordinary, I found he his past was murky. He had done things he wasn't so proud of.

My friends and colleagues now condemn me, even though many differing books on religion point to a level of "understanding" and fairness. My life is now shattered because of his actions, when I wholeheartedly knew nothing of his past.

Irrespective of his current progress in life, reforming himself, he should forever be condemned for his actions 20 years ago. In fact he should face the death penalty. There is no reform, once a bad person, always a bad person period. We need the punishing laws of the US where if someone gets a parking ticket, it will forever remain on their record.

Job Interview: "Have you ever been convicted of a crime?" xYes No

Off with their head. We don't need a society who is forgiving of the past. We need a society that cries over the milk we spilled last week. What else is there to focus on in this economy. Politics?

Didn't get the answer I guess. Good story.

To the Editors:

So Gov. Palin asserts Sen. Obama and Bill Ayers are close, and so he's paling around with terrorists? She's supposed to be a fundamentalist Christian, who knows her Bible, yet she seems to have missed the bit about getting the mote out of your own eye before noting it in someone else's.

Specifically, Sen. McCain's pal and convicted felon G. Gordon Liddy: allow me two quotes from Media Matters :

"How close are McCain and Liddy? At least as close as Obama and Ayers appear to be. In 1998, Liddy's home was the site of a McCain fundraiser. Over the years,
he has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns—including $1,000 this year."

"...national talk show host and Watergate felon G.
Gordon Liddy instructed his radio listeners how to kill federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms officials. He urged his audience to "kill the sons of bitches" by shooting them in the head. (Minneapolis Star-Tribune, 2/24/95)

In addition Liddy told his listeners how to construct a bomb using ammonium nitrate, diesel fuel and dynamite. He specifically said:
"And that would do enormous work; the work would either take out a wall of a quarry, or take out that building." (Dallas Morning News, 4/20/95)"

It would seem that Sen. McCain is paling around with a terrorist who was advocating terror recently, not thirty years ago.

This Baraq Obama witch hunt about being a friend
of a former "terrorist" [according to Sarah Palin's cackling] seems to me to be the unearthing
of the Weather Underground tomb to pile some dirt on Obama. But this attempt is ignorant's fare, not an ethical issue for Obama.

There was a left wind social upheaval that spread like a brush fire across Europe in the 1950's that helped the Soviet Union consolidate Eastern Europe without firing a shot [literally]. That brush fire then spread to Latin America and the
first U.S. military intervention in Guatemala in 1954. Then came Fidel Castro's liberation of Cuba,
the idealism of Che Guevara, U.S. puppet dictators and death squads in Latin America, and
revolutionary idealism in the U.S. - Malcom X, Black Panthers, Weather Underground, and other who felt George Armstrong Custer's America was not their own.

That was a re-adjusting time in American social values, jurisprudence, civil rights, women rights,
etc. The idealists, like Bill and Bernardine Ayers, fought for their ideas, and some died in the process while others did prison terms. But it wasn't in vain. Because of those struggles, we are
a better and more tolerant society today. After all that was the essence of democracy for Plato and Aristotle, and as a Greek myself I know better. Most people don't know that ancient Greece
was built by "Elotes" [slaves], as the Egyptian pyramids were, too.

Slavery was not abolished by degree, or by the
compassion of oligarchs, aristocrats, tyrants, or
kings and Sultans. It was abolished by those who fought and died for, and at later years by those who dared to take up the cause. The Ayers certainly were caught in the idealism of the time,
but they served a useful purpose in bringing some
equality to the poor and disadvantaged. Therefore,
neither they, nor Obama deserve the lynching and terrorist labels spilled out irresponsibly on the media.

At a time when 3.5 trillion dollars have been lost in shares values for the average American and
retirees, America shall be preoccupied how to cover the sinking hole on the Wall Street -rather
than grind and rehash a half a century old issues
that the sinking in the polls republican hopefuls try to use as a campaign lifesaver.

My comment on the matter of Barack Obama and his association with Bill Ayers is that this is a ridiculous means to attack the character of Barack Obama. You question the actions of Ayers while Obama was an 8-year-old child. What the heck does that have to do with the election of the presidency in 2008? If truth be known, there were numerous protests about the Vietnam War. No, everyone did not set off bombs, but they did protest in various ways. Many people disagreed with the laws and protested for civil rights during this same period. Are they considered to be terrorists? How about the true terrorists that existed then and now, racists? In the South, many blacks were murdered for standing up for their rights, marching for new laws, and for simply being black. Has the McCain campaign sought out their murderers for prosecution? No, and they never will. Palin is one of the most unqualified people to address the American public as a political candidate that I have ever seen. She is a little pee-on that has been sent out to look like an idiot like the Republicans are so good at doing. In a couple of weeks when the Republicans see that their little strategy has not pulled the American people from the true issues that face this election, they will hang her out to dry by trying to disassociate themselves from her.

Ayers' political views (wiki)

In an interview published in 1995, Ayers characterized his political beliefs at that time and in the 1960s and 1970s: "I am a radical, Leftist, small 'c' communist ... [Laughs] Maybe I'm the last communist who is willing to admit it. [Laughs] We have always been small 'c' communists in the sense that we were never in the [Communist] party and never Stalinists. The ethics of Communism still appeal to me. I don't like Lenin as much as the early Marx. I also like Henry David Thoreau, Mother Jones and Jane Addams [...]"[27]In 1970 Ayers was called "a national leader"[28] of the Weatherman organization and "one of the chief theoreticians of the Weathermen".[29] The Weathermen were initially part of the Revolutionary Youth Movement (RYM) within the SDS, splitting from the RYM's Maoists by claiming there was no time to build a vanguard party and that revolutionary war against the United States government and the capitalist system should begin immediately. Their founding document called for the establishment of a "white fighting force" to be allied with the "Black Liberation Movement" and other "anti-colonial" movements[30] to achieve "the destruction of US imperialism and the achievement of a classless world: world communism."[31] In June 1974, the Weather Underground released a 151-page volume titled Prairie Fire, which stated: "We are a guerrilla organization [...] We are communist women and men underground in the United States [...]"[32] The Weatherman leadership, including Bill Ayers, pushed for a radical reformulation of sexual relations under the slogan "Smash Monogamy".[33][34]

Slowly but surely "rock star" Barack Obama's lipstick
is coming off with every bad decision, and by now even
his vice president candidate Senator Joe Biden had to
admit: Mrs. Clinton would've been the better pig pick.

Have a nice one...

Great, thoughtful comments here! Not the usual one breath tripe. Thank you.

Like Clinton, didn't inhale and draft dodge and Bush didn't draft dodge while on coke...of course he knew who he was! He may not have known the first time he met him but of course he knew at some point. But is as bad as the aforementioned? Having to work with committed political idealists?

It doesn't matter that he was on the board! Is Mr. Obama supposed to not pursue his goals because a 60's radical is participating? No. You learn to work with people to achieve your goals. For both of them that goal was fair housing.

All of these questionable associates are what makes Obama qualified. If you can stay clean and still get the goals of your constituency met then you are headed for leadership. For the current administration their constituency is defense contractors, oil companies, energy providers, etc. and they have done well.

Obama wants to cast a wider net to those left out and it is going to work because of the climate of unbridled greed created by this administration.

Who care really? Most of the youth (Obama's voters) in this country have no idea who the Weather Underground was or what they stood for. People are very angry at the government and I don't think this issue matters. Most young people would rather see a candidate consort with radicals than lobbyists and bankers.

When Obama knew about Ayers' background matters for several reasons. It is another example of Obama's lies. Obama and Ayers were a lot closer than just a fundraiser. They spent more than six years working together at the Chicago Anneberg Project and the Woods Foundation. Obama and Ayers oversaw the spending of $100 million dollars from the Anneberg Project over a six year period. Obama and Ayers were board members of the Woods Foundation. Ayers and Obama directed a $75,000 grant to an organization run by the Mona Khalidi, wife of Rashid Khalidi a longtime friend of Ayers and Obama. Ayers raised money for Obama's campaign. Yet evidently, Obama was worried enough about Ayers'background, that Obama LIED about how well he knew Ayers saying "Ayers is someone who lives in my neighborhood". He did the lawyerial thing and omitted facts and distorted other facts.

Obama has repeated this type of behavior with his statements about Reverand Wright. Obama called Wright my spiritual mentor and friend of twenty years. Yet when Wright's controversial sermons came to light Obama changed his tune, saying he was never present when the Reverand made controversial statements.

What about Rezko. Obama stated "It was a bonehead move" when talking about how he and Michelle paid well below market price for a part of the lot the Rezko's owned next to Obama's new home. Obama had been in the Illinois Legislature for six years, he knew who Rezko was and what Rezko was about. He knew Rezko tried to buy or bully political influence. Heck, Rezko raised $159,000 in campaign money for Obama. Yet according to Obama, it was an innocent mistake.

Obama keeps changing his story on these issues, just like he changes his political views depending on what he thinks people want to hear.

So the issue of what Obama knew about Ayers' and when he knew it is important, because it is another example of Obama saying anything, including lies, to get elected.

The only purpose in bringing up Ayers name is so that Palin can put "Obama" and "terrorist" in the same sentence. This is to bolster the more nefarious messages that are currently going out in e-mails claiming that Obama is a muslim Manchurian candidate. Either charge on its own his fairly absurd. The McCain campaign is hoping that the combination will create enough fear to get their man elected.

As far as the actual charge about associating with Ayers? These people just can't let go of the past. They are so desperate to prove that America was right in Vietnam, waging war on a third world country for twelve long years that they're willing to repeat the whole thing over again.

It's plain and simple to see we are fighting 2 wars, the sad part is the first war was a decoy to get us into the second war(where are the weapons of Mass Destruction?). All this talk about who was friends with who doesn't really matter, it's really plain to see, if you like what has been going on in the last 8 years, vote McCain, who is buddies with Bush, Bush who's personal family had close ties with Osama Bin Laden( a recent terrorist let's not forget ) It's not like any of the two candidates is what we need right now, but if Obama wants to end this war, then I'm all for it, they said the same thing about Clinton when he took office, that he couldn't protect us, but 9/11 didn't happen on his watch people! Think about it!

I believe that it is not just a witch hunt or anything like that. The problem is on the Obama himself because he's been saying I do not know or recall all the things said and done by his "former" close friends. American people deserve a straight answer. I denounced them isn't enough because we feel that he said that out of political convenience. Who is this Obama, who would not tell you how he got into Harvard Law School? Why no one of his Harvard classmates or his college friends say anything good about him? Why almost all the media are not curious about it? Because they already know but they don't want you to know about it?

2 words for John McCain - John Hagee.

And how about we learn the history of Sara Palin and when she knew she was going to fly being 9 months pregnant? And when exactly her water broke? And when exactly she flew back to Alaska?

And when doctor's started advising pregnant not to fly at what stage of their pregnancy?

Talk about judgement issues...

It seems that Obama is above reproach on Ayers, Rev. Wright etc. I find Axlerod's statements disturbing. No I don't believe that it is fair to claim that Obama palls around with terroists. But I do believe it is fair to question his past associations.

Similiar quesions would be asked and pressed if McCain or Palin launched their political careers in David Duke's living room or were members of a Church for 20 years where hatred and extream views rained down from the pulpit. Of course they would.

What a sad, weak jab. The "association" is an insignificant relationship with a man who was a terrorist 3 decades previously and is now a pillar of the community. The only Americans stupid enough to think that any guilt attaches from such an association were going to vote Republican regardless.

Moreover, the Obama campaign has been holding back on all the dirt it has available to throw at McCain, waiting for McCain to act dishonorably enough to justify it. In view of the McCain campaign's unfair attacks on incidental associations like Ayers, Obama is now fully justified in highlighting the far more relevant and damning associations of McCain with Charles Keating and the Keating Five, *among others*.

It will take a truly unusual person to both be willing to believe that the trivial Ayers association with Obama is significant, and to concurrently fail to recognize that McCain's association with Charles Keating and the Keating Five is vastly more important, more relevant to current financial issues, more damning evidence of McCain's complete failure to exercise good judgment, and not incidental but rather directly reflective of McCain himself. Such an unusual person ... one might say they are "stupid squared" ... might actually be moved toward the McCain camp by the net result of these attacks. But for the other 99.9 % of undecided voters, the attacks and counterattacks are going to net out strongly in favor of Obama.

This particular guilt-by-association attack is a weak punch that has opened McCain up for a devastating counterpunch. Take what satisfaction in it you can, right wingers. Those of you with a little more intelligence will realize that McCain has so much questionable history to draw from that each and every one of McCain's attacks against Obama can and will be met by a much more effective counterattack ... leaving McCain looking worse than Obama in terms of judgment, associations, etc., and hypocritical to boot.

If McCain had retained his principles and stayed on the high road he might have had a ghost of a chance of dissociating himself from GW and winning this election. But he's abandoned his principles to pander to the right wing, and has chosen the low road for his campaign. To change metaphors, he's decided to throw stones. But he lives in a glass house, and the neighbor he's throwing at has much bigger stones to throw back. Unlike the surprised John Kerry, Obama has all those stones lined up near to hand.

The Republicans thought they really had the Democrats' number, that they could sling mud with impunity because the Democrats were too decent to sling it back. Well, the Democrats aren't quite as dumb as you think. They've figured out, as the Israelis did in 1967, that counterattacking can be much more effective than initiating an attack. Initiating an attack exposes the attacker as the aggressor, while retaliation is morally justified; so if the retaliation is effective, the attacker not only loses but has no grounds to cry foul. It's why Israel got control of Gaza, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights, without being seen as aggressors.

So bring it on! While your wimpy punches will barely connect, our counterpunches are going to be brutal. Keep up the slugfest, and by the time it's over McCain's reputation is going to be beaten to a pulp, and Obama is going to win by even bigger margins than he would have otherwise.

Or don't keep it up. The McCain campaign can choose to lose with or without honor. Schmidt being a Rove protege, there's no question which he'll choose. But McCain can't say he wasn't warned.

RE:the comment by Katzenelson- seriously? What bad decisions are you referring to? Insisting the fundamentals of the economy are solid when bank after bank collapses? Insisting that we are "winning" in Iraq? Insisting that we should have gone there in the first place? Claiming to be an advocate for regulation overnight when his entire career has been spent fighting for deregulation? Choosing a running mate that doesn't even know what the Bush doctrine is and can't even name a supreme court case aside from Roe vs. Wade? Oh wait, that would be McCain. Not that "other one".

Gee, Lynn, maybe you should also wonder about John McCain and his ties to retired Gen. Jon Singlaub's group, the U.S. Council for World Freedom, back in the '80's.

You'd think that having his name on the letterhead of this fascist outfit for two years might be something worth exploring now that there has been an AP story on it.

I'd bet the farm that you won't be writing anything about this in your smear Obama blog, though.

slightly revised...

Hi, Lynn-

I think this entire inquiry is misguided.

The appropriate question is:

When did the Annenberg Foundation, founded by a Reagan Republican, realize that Bill Ayers was a domestic terrorist and why did they give him $50 million to improve education in Chicago?

Or to back up one more step:

When did tens of Chicago educators and administrators realize that Bill Ayers was a domestic terrorist and why did they submit a $50 million grant proposal with him to improve education in Chicago?

In 1995, when Obama was asked to chair the CAC board, 100s of people were already involved in organizing the Chicago Annenberg Challenge; multiple foundations, administrators, and educators were already working with Ayers.

This group included bank presidents, business leaders, university presidents, and foundation heads. Many involved were older and from Chicago, and unlike Obama, certainly knew Ayers' history as a domestic terrorist during the Vietnam era.

Was it an issue for any of them at the time Obama was asked to join?

Would they have warned him? Would they have considered it a concern? Would they have even mentioned it?

Ask them.

I think one of the questions should be, why is an unrepentant domestic terrorist considered a "respected academic"?

Mr. Ayers was featured in Chicago Magazine in 2001 standing on an American flag and saying that he didn't think the Weather Underground had "done enough".

http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/August-2001/No-Regrets/

Surely an Illinois pol, such as Mr. Obama, would have read an article about a friend who had hand picked him to be the Chairman of the board for his multi-million dollar Annenberg grant.

This was no ordinary crime. This was BOMBING the PENTAGON, same as Osama Bin Laden!! Mr. Obama should withdraw from the campaign immediately. I am so embarressed for my Democrat party. How sad.

Hi,

I just want to know why people who support republicans are always on the attack about someones character. Is it their insecurity? Can they not argue without insulting (like the above comment) or is it that they are just arrogant, and short sighted. I understand that you want to win in an election, but trying to find people who you met or was once labeled a terrorist is idiotic. Every great name was once a terrorist. Gandhi was labeled a terrorist by the British, our own forefathers who liberated us from Colonialism were labeled terrorist. So labels such as these are a very loose terminology and one should be open to the circumstance that these labels were used in.

Hmm... I don't suppose there are any actual Christians left in America? You know, the religion of FORGIVENESS? Ayers served his sentence and is now a productive member of society.

If you want to condemn everyone who committed crimes in the past, then why is it that you voted for George W Bush (drunk driving, multiple forms of illegal drug use, most likely got a previous girlfriend a back-alley abortion, etc)?

If Lynn Sweet would talk to Dick Kay, a retired Chicago journlist, I think she would find some answers. Last weekend, I heard him on the radio, and what he had to say was genuinely illuminating. He has the Obama-Ayers story from the beginning. Roberta

I'm not really sure how much this matters- as a Liberal Democrat I've come into contact, and sometimes become friends with, rednecks, Conservative Christians, Republicans and even some people who displayed racist tendancies.

I can even say I've been friends with Army officers, policemen and hunters.

Please don't hold that against me any more than Barack Obama knowing a guy from the Underground

What I am curious about is why you wrote this article. The subject is irrelevant since when Obama met him Ayers had already reformed and had become a constructive member of society. Why don't you ask about McCain's service on the advisory board to the World Anti-Communist Leaguethe U.S. chapter of an international group linked to ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America? They had ties to ex Nazis.l does this mean McCain was a Nazi sympathizer? This is all, like your article, irrelevant to the economic crisis we face today as a nation and to the election at hand.

It seems like we're missing something big about Ayers here: he is impenitent. He's not just a "former" terrorist. In fact, he says he wishes he'd done more. In other words, now he's philosophically a bigger terrorist than he was then. He hasn't changed his mind; all he did was change jobs.

And how has Obama handled it? He's backed up on his mistake, but only after he was called on it. Why don't we know when Obama found out about Ayers' background? Because he didn't think it was important enough to stand up and publicly denounce Ayers-- until it was making him look bad.

Still, Obama wants to brush off the question. Sure, he's "denounced" Ayers-- with an "aw gee" attitude. But the allegation that he's "palling around with terrorists" is a huge one, which obviously hasn't gone unnoticed. Voters will feel it's an unanswered (i.e. possibly credible) accusation until Sen. Obama makes a single, loud and clear denunciation.

Try this: "Maybe I should have spoken out more loudly when I found out about the bombings. But let me be loud and clear now: Ayers' acts were unacceptable, and it's unacceptable that he still thinks those acts were somehow justified. This is a free country, and we have better ways to make ourselves heard than killing innocent fellow-Americans."

So, Obama knows someone who was once a terrorist but is now a education professor and this is a big deal how?
This is America, and last time I checked we believe in allowing people to change... it sounds like this guy changed for the better. Obama was not involved in his past actions, and it should not be an issue now.

Honestly, who cares if Obama did or didn't know Ayers past history? In the whole scheme of things, does it even matter? Has anybody been watching doddering McLame? I could of times I found myself wanting to reach through the T.V. and steady him. He looked old, fragile and out of touch with reality.

We have reached the fork in the road, folks. One road goes straight into an economic and foreign policy abyss and the other towards a light, a hope, that we will get back on track and retreive the respect and admiration we used to have from the rest of the world who saw us as the country to emulate.

Your choice.

I would not be concerned by Obama's friendliness with this man were it not for:

1) Ayers is completely and utterly unrepentant and has stated, more than once, that he "wished he had done more"

2) This is not the only person with whom Obama has been friendly that has an unsavory history. In fact, Ayers is not the only person who has professed a complete and utter dislike of the country itself - so much so that one wonders why they haven't immigrated elsewhere

3) Obama has first called these assorted people "friends", then "like family", then "mentors", then "acquantences", then basically removed himself from them entirely in some cases. That brings up questions as to his truthfulness first and to his loyalty second.

Too many questions about Obama's judgement of people, and his loyalty to people and ideas. I don't like what I see here.

Why is it that every time Obama (or one of his surrogates or supporters) is asked about his relationship with Ayers, the answer changes, or an attempt is made to change the subject?

It seems pretty obvious to me. If the full truth was told, the overwhelming majority of the American people would reject Mr. Obama at the ballot box.

If it was widely known that Senator Obama sought and received the support of the New Party, a socialist group, in his bid for Illinois state senate, and that his support for their positions was promised in the run up to the election, the overwhelming majority of the American people would reject Mr. Obama at the ballot box. That explains why this important detail is omitted from Mr. Obama's biographies and website.

Senator Obama is making an attempt to seem centrist, but he is not. He has not voted that way. He has made the decision to align himself with people who do not believe that way. He has said that he wants to be appear to be a blank slate so that others can project their beliefs onto him.

Is this really the kind of person we want to be President of the United States?

And, to Obama supporters - I'm really not interested in your attacks on Mr. McCain as an answer to these questions. Don't change the subject - aren't you the least bit curious as to why these questions are being answered directly?

I may be out of the main group of serious thinkers here but I believe Obama knew and IF he didn't know about Ayers past then he's truly too dumb to be trusted with "MY" national security.
Bill Ayers calls his 'buddies' 'Comrade' ANYONE would think that was odd...if they lived in the US of A. Impossible not to know AND I believe since he met his wife through Dohrn while working at the law firm they worked in 84-88?? I mean seriously folks; since Obama met Michelle through Dohrn does any one really doubt Bill Ayers and Bernadine's past was never a topic of conversation? Seriously......just about impossible.
Does that make Obama a liar? Well, it puts him in the 'really good politician category' FOR SURE!!!

I’d be very happy to read Comrade Bill Ayers’ Obit, Bernadine’s too!!
American traitor who should be in jail at the very least: As Bill Ayers has said, “Guilty as hell and Free as a bird”.

Wonderful, just wonderful and such a nice thing to say right before he starts teaching his class……..those kids are being taught by a baby Osama who backs an Obama!!

ONLY in AMERICA!!!

This is not difficult to understand. Any example of someone making a personal movement away from violent extremism to the civil pursuit of social progress should be of great interest to our leaders, because it is this kind of movement that we are seeking on a global level, right? Or are we only interested in blowing the bad guys out of the water?

Obama didn't sit down for lunch with this guy to talk about how pipe bombs are the solution to the problem, he wanted to learn about someone who made the decision that we're hoping is made by any organization worldwide that would resort to violence and terror tactics to accomplish their goals. I appreciate a leader that is open to breaking barriers and opening the doors to this kind of productive dialogue.

I'm not curious at all because this is just common sense obvious to me.

If this alleged character issue is important to anyone, that person will never vote for McCain.

McCain has ties to an actual felon, and someone who advocated domestic terrorism (that's on top of Liddy's plans to assassinate a journalist); G Gordon Liddy. McCain is on the record praising Liddy and claiming to respect him.

Palin’s husband was a member of the Alaska Independence Party for 7 years, an organization that advocated violence against the United States.

Given Obama’s very tenuous alleged ties to Ayers, someone who has not even been convicted (what happened to the quaint American notion of innocent till proven guilty?) and who has admitted that his claim regarding are exaggerated; McCain and Palin make Obama look like a Saint on this issue.

It's obvious that the official talking point from the Obama campaign is, "He was only 8 years old when Ayers was a domestic terrorist!"

I think what the Obama campaign is missing here is that TODAY Ayers is an UNREPENTANT domestic terrorist. Any comment from Obama on that fact?

In addition, this idea that he didn't know who Ayers was when he went to his house? LOL!

That is either a blatant lie or Barack Obama is stupid.
[Hint: I don't think BHO is stupid.]

Regarding: Nikos Retsos comment to the L Sweet blog.

Mr Retsos, your comment referring to slaves building the pyramids is historically inaccurate. Farmers who were quite free and independent built Cheops as well as all of the great Pyramids. To some it was a spiritual mission while the Nile was in recession during the year; to others, especially the quarry workers near Aswan, it was for money.

Your views are your own, but are remarkably ignorant of the facts of revolutionaries like Che and Ayers...these people were self serving and never accomplished any of their objectives...NONE. Their so called idealism was rejected by 98% of those who learned their message, the remaining 2% were criminals. Don't compare their iconoclastic methods to the great revolutions of society. The latter embraced true ideals and used freedom as its basis...not some far left socialist concept of government.
As a father of a school aged child, I am very happy that you are a "retired academic".

Slowly but surely "rock star" Barack Obama's lipstick is coming off with every bad decision, and by now even his vice president candidate Senator Joe Biden had to admit: Mrs. Clinton would've been the better pig pick.

I see you are from the alternate universe, where it is Obama making the bad decisions and not John McCain.

Over here in the real universe, it is John McCain who has been making all of the bad and rash decisions, and it is being reflected in the polls.

This "Ayers connection" is a non-story because by the time Obama ever came around Bill Ayers, he had been completely removed from his prior activities of the 1960s and had become a respected educator who served several positions of trust and advice. It was the version of Ayers that Obama met with and served on a couple of boards with. The only reason why Ayer's past matters now is the fact that someone is running for president and their opponents need a negative aspect to attack that person with.

It must be noted that Bill Ayers has never been convicted of a crime, despite all of the allegations.

Better yet, let's talk about John McCain's actual participation in the Keating Five affair. Without McCain, it would have been called the Keating Four, if there would have been an affair at all.

The following is an excerpted quote from Obama's memoir, Dreams of My Father. It indicates that he is someone who is highly cognizant of his friends. Should we believe his association with Ayers to be anything different?

"To avoid being mistaken for a sellout,I chose my friends carefully. The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist Professors and the structural feminists and punk-rock performance poets. We smoked cigarettes and wore leather jackets. At night,in the dorms,we discussed neocolonialism,Franz Fanon,Eurocentrism, and patriarchy. When we ground out our cigarettes in the hallway carpet or set our stereos so loud that the walls began to shake,we were resisting bourgeois society's stifling constraints. We weren't indifferent or careless or insecure. We were alienated."

Obama's relationship with William Ayers fits this mold and then some. Obama has people hoodwinked and bamboozled. He must think we are all stupid.

It is nice to finally see someone question the Obama/Ayers relationship. Your story goes to the heart of the issue as opposed to the rhetoric about Obama being 8 yrs. old when Mr. Ayers was carrying out his acts of terrorism.

To quote an earlier post from Rita, "What the heck does that have to do with the election of the presidency in 2008? If truth be known,"...that is the whole point....if the truth be known?

When attention to this issue was brought forward Mr. Obama told the nation "he is just a guy in my neighborhood". He stood on a podium and lied to the american people....why?

The problem Mr. Obama has is that this is not the only highly questionable relationship he has:

Ayers
Wright
Rezko
Khalidi
Odinga

When you start to play connect the dots on all of these "guys in my neighborhood" it starts to look like a pretty scarey neighborhood.

It seems that Mr. Obama and his campaign believe they do not have to explain these relationships and so far the MSM have allowed them to follow that course. Someone needs to answer these questions and even more importantly Mr. Obama needs to be held accountable for his relationships with these people.

If we think the Ayers issue is tough...wait until they start on Khalidi and Odinga.

McCain camp is out of touch and is now bankrupt of any ideas or vision for this country. This Ayers stuff is such a non-sense and shows McCain's campaign is staring down the abyss. Obama campaign is decent enough not to raise non-issues like:
1. McCain's association with cheating Keating 5.
2. McCain's association with anti-semite Nazi group.
3. His association with Jack Abrahmoff.
4. His association with AZ land developer and McCain fund raiser. McCain aided this McCain crony in the land swap of federal land deal in return for bundling campaign contributions.
5. His running mate Sarah Palin's asscoiation with sessionist movement- Alaskan Independence Party.
6. McCain's for sex escapedes.
The list can go on and on. One can fight over these associations or explain to people as to who can better serve them on the issues that is greatly affecting the people now.

Barak Obama's good friend Tony Rezko bamboozled Chicago out of millions in fake remodeling projects, directed to him by Obama. Obama won his senate seat by having lawyers disqualify all opponents.

Rezko did not have the money to purchase and then practically give Obama his home and the adjoining property. It was loaned to Rezko by Iraqui-born billionaire Nadhmi Auchi, who is suspected of selling weapons to Saddam during the Oil-for-Food embargo.

Ayers' wife, Bernadette Dohrn, celebrated the murder of Sharon Tate and Billy Ayers urged people to kill their parents. I was there during the 60's, and these types of people were embarrassing filth that forever polluted the image of hippies. Two years ago Ayers praised Hugo Chavez while a guest in Venezuela.

Obama actively campaigned for the losing socialist presidential candidate (and member of his Muslim Luo tribe) Raila Odinga. Members of the tribe subsequently went on a spree raping and killing 1000 Christians. So much for Obama's foreign policy expertise; he can't even keep a fellow tribesman from fomenting genocide.

The issue is not what Ayers did when Obama was 8 years old. The issue is not even Obama's association, per se, with Ayers. The real issue, and one unexplored by nearly everyone, is what Obama did after Ayers made him Chair of the CAC: he supervised doling out millions of dollars to organizations dedicated to the radicalization of school kids. One of the major organizations was headed by, you guessed it, Ayers. THAT is the real issue. Barack Obama is now, has been and will continue to be a radical. Pure and simple.

Some Questions for the News Media:

  • If a leader of the K.K.K. had organized several lynchings of blacks in the 1940s when McCain was a young boy...
  • Then 40 years later when McCain was an adult...
  • And McCain knew of that man's history as a terrorist...
  • But McCain had nonetheless attended a fund raiser hosted by that terrorist...
  • Would THAT be covered by the press?
  • Would THAT be an enormous ISSUE in this campaign?
  • ANSWER: Of course it would be. But of course, John McCain did NOT attend such a fund raiser.
  • Barack Obama did attend such a fund raiser.

    Obama claims BLANKET IGNORANCE about:
  • Jeremiah "God bless America" Wright (tongue planted firmly in cheek),
  • Father Michael "I'M WHITE!!!" Pfleger,
  • William "I wish we had [bombed America] more" Ayers, and
  • Tony "Here, let me help you buy that house" Rezko
  • Wake up people. Obama will bring "Chicago Politics" to us all. Your really don't want that. Once they have power they don't share it and they never give it back. Ask some one who lives in Chicago. Ask Mayor and his brothers. Pay-ola.

Sen. Clinton brought this up during the primaries and no one claimed she was "racist" for the comment but Gov. Palin says something about it and she is "racist" and a nut case. What a double standard.

It's not important to prove how chummy Obama was with Ayers, or even how many times they met. Ayers was the worst kind of 60's radical, anti-American homicidal bomber. According to Obama, he's mainstream now and working in "education". Well, sort of. Back in 1972, a witty and entertaining Saul Alinsky writes Rules for Radicals telling the bomb throwers and other yippie detritus to wise up, cut their hair, stop saying "Pig" and "Motherf****r" because it scares people, and join the establishment to effect revolutionary change from the inside, by any means necessary. It's very influential and many radical groups around the country (and in Chicago) codify and use it's principles, a young Hillary Clinton falls in love with the writing, internalizes it and writes her thesis on it, and years later Barack Obama gets a paid gig to train ACORN leaders in it's application. So Ayers somehow becomes a college professor (?!) and starts getting himself involved with educational policymaking in the Chicago area. Swell. In the mid-90's some grant money becomes available from a very respectable source, the Annenberg Foundation, and Ayers cooks up a scheme, in the name of improving low income education in Chicago, and nabs a $50 million grant to start it. The first board director is Barack Obama. It doesn't matter one bit whether he was personally selected by Ayers, or even how many times they sat in together. This is an Ayers project, with Obama at the wheel. The only problem is the money doesn't go to actually help education, or even directly to schools, but rather to fund slimy groups like ACORN to introduce radicalism into the school system, seeding the next generation not to excel academically or join the system, but to fight it (ie: Change). By it's own measures, at the end of 5 years there was no measurable improvement in what we would consider academic achievement. This is a significant part of Obamas' resume, but one he doesn't talk about much, except in very general terms of Community Organization.

As I understand it, Obama didn't mention his work on the Annenberg Challenge in either of his books - he spent at least five years there and presumably learned something about education - which presumably is a credential that supports his candidacy.

Also, I am a little tired of his story that he comes from modest means and his mother was on food stamps. Wasn't she on food stamps while she was pursuing her education - her graduate school work? Wasn't he raised by his grandmother - who was a bank vice president in both Washington and Hawaii? I am not suggesting his family was wealthy - but it sounds like he was raised in a solidly middle class household.

Obama has done little to earn the office he seek exceot campaign. I do not respect his candicacy at all.

If Obama was working with Ayers while Ayers was commiting these bad acts this would be a real story.

The reality is that Ayers is a rehabilitated criminal who was on the run and eventually turned himself in at the mercy of the courts. The FBI or whatever did some illegal wiretapping and he got off. (That doesn't make sense, but that's the story)

It seems that since he admitted his crimes that you wouldn't need wire taps to find him guilty.

The point is he is rehabilitated. Some criminals do make it back to society. He's a schoold teacher at one of the top schools in the country. I bet many of his students didn't know his past either.

That being said. Ayers is now a respected contributor to society and the boards they worked on together were charities of all things with one being a republican charity.

There is no story here. Obama needs to come out and say EXACTLY when he found out about Ayers and close this issue out. Spokesmen saying this or that means nothing. Obama can close this case with a 5 minute press conference.

Why aren't you also interested in the 30 odd tapes McCain cut for North Vietnam's propaganda machine. What would they tell you about the candidate?

I'm very curious, how many of you can recall exactly when and how you learned something unusual or startling about the many in your lives with whom you shared only a limited association? I know all of our abilities to remember such details differ, and I know in my own case I don't have such specific recollections even with regard to some who became very important in my life, though with regards to some I can picture very clearly our first meeting and other occasions. Even with regard to them, I would be lying if I said I could specifically recall the occasion of learning something specific about them, and they are the ones with whom my association was neither brief nor sporadic. I have a professional degree, and I am respected in my professional community, but I am curious, am I a fatally deficient human being in this regard, or am I normal? Sometimes the only honest answer to a question is, I don't know.

It's encouraging to see some of the luster beginning to tarnish.

When did McCain know about George Bush?

    Niksos Retsos...

You're an " academic "? What garbage. If you think the 50's were great because of the rise of Communism, you're a sick man.

If this liberal Democratic scum philosophy is so great, why are you still here in America, and not in your glorious Cuba?

You Democratic Liberals are all the same; enslave the proletariat, and preserve you own privileges. Get lost.

the issue is not when Obama knew Ayers was a former terrorist; it is when did he understand that Ayers is still an anti American radical. When did he understand that Ayers' educational ideas about "teaching for social justice" are a way of delegitimating the American ideal; when did he understand that Ayers is absolutely unchanged, intellectually, from the thug who engaged in a bombing campaign in the 70s; when did Obama learn that his friend and sponsor gives friendly interviews to the Revolutionary Communist Party and makes visits of solidarity to Venezuela to praise his fellow thug Hugo Chavez? Alexrod is a pathetic liar and the writer of this article is a fool for allowing him to gull her. The question is not what Ayers was doing when Obama was seven years old. It is what he has been doing since coming up from the underground--a bombing campaign by other means--and used his family's connnections to get a handhold in Chicago politics where he could give someone like Obama a boost in his climb up the greasy pole.

This Ayers flap is truly not productive and of marginal relevance. Apparently the first time Obama was asked about Ayers, he blew off the question with an incomplete answer. He didn't deny knowing Ayers, and what he said about him wasn't inaccurate, just incomplete. Now, that may not be an ideal response to some, but it hardly disqualifies an elected official from seeking higher office. Indeed, the ability to limit what you say while doing no violence to accuracy is an essential ingredient of a president's job.

It should also be kept in mind that in Obama's neighborhood, Hyde Park, there are a lot of folks on both the far left and far right with very strongly held opinions. The University of Chicago, which is located in that community, is famous for producing both leading conservatives and liberals. So in that environment, Ayers would not have seemed especially remarkable even though he is clearly well to left in our politicial spectrum.

And by the way, why do those criticizing Obama on this make it sound as if he and Ayers were some kind of twosome. Apparently, both boards they served on were fairly large with other members who were actively involved -- and some were even Republicans. I have served on several volunteer boards and knew almost nothing about the political views or personal history of the other board members. What I did ascertain promptly were qualfications that earned my fellow board members a spot on the board. In the case of Ayers, his academic position and his work to secure the Annenberg challenge grant for Chicago would have been the obvious credentials.

It's not as if under Ayers' influence, Obama suddenly began espousing a host of radical causes. One thing that makes Obama attractive as a potential president is his willingness to deal calmly with those who hold a range of views, including views he doesn't much like -- and I would guess that Bill Ayers falls into that category.

"If you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, You aint gonna make it with anyone anyhow"
"John Lennon" from the song Revolution

After reading this and other blogs, I have to honestly say that I feel suspicious of all candidates now.
I do wonder about Obama in ways I did not before. I want to know what he truly is about and where his effectiveness in Policy Leadership can be shown.
I have become uncomfortable with what is being said about some of his associations and do not know how to separate the wheat from the chaff (sp?) regarding any of the "Gossip of Real Concern".

It is possible that I would end up not voting at all (for President) if this gossip cannot be dealt with clearly and with a straight-forward forth-rightness by Barack Obama and/or Michelle Obama.

HOWEVER, I would NEVER vote for McCAin/Palin.
To me their self-serving agendas, war-mentality, forced "Pro-life" agenda is B.S. She is Brutal to wildlife,(publicly promotes aerial wolf-hunting and bounties on severed wolf-legs) neglectful of her many children and lets her husband help her do her Governor job as advisor. He has been a member of a screwball Alaska anarchist/successionist group. She's an OIL$$$$ viper.
McCain is a manipulative old warrior that is stuck in some replay of a past long gone. He wants to make us more of a militaristic Nation than we already are, and has some very shady associations and actions in his past.
NEVER, that ticket. The most destructive and manipulative combo next to Bush-Cheney. NEVER!

I live in Pennsylvania, you know the ones who believe in God and guns as Obama put it, and anyone who is running for the highest position in the United States and most powerful figure in the world should come clean an explain his connection fully. What is Obama trying to hide?

From my research he was and is very close with Ayers. Obama sat on boards with him, started his political career in in livingrome, was put in charge to distribute money to questionable education organizations, and other links. Obama also was a lawyer that helped hide ACORN's illegal mortagage and voter registration in the Clinton era. Obama also trained the ACORN by request of the organization head. He also was involved with many other shady characters in Chicago and when he went to college!

Yes he has to explain to me and the rest of the United States How, When, Why and Where he aligns with the bad people in his history and now.

Don't forget the individual that caused the Freddie and Franny problem advise him and are his friends (Franks, etc...) now! Also, it appears he knew about this economic problem and helped it along. I think I know what he is but lets leave him try to talk his way out and not have his staff cover everything up by say it is racial or association!

I love this country that was built by God, guns and guts, and some smooth talking lawyer like Obama is going try to ruin it!

Please expalin it to me - Sensei Andy Moyer

You know what? Obama MAY be on the up and up. Obama MAY be telling the truth. Let's pretend for a second that Obama is trying to get into the most important office in the world. Let's pretend he is trying to become president of the USA. I don't know about you but "MAY" just doesn't cut it for me. I want to know for sure ... 100% that the person leading this great nation has NEVER ... EVER ... HAD ANY POSSIBLITY of being an aquaintance with a terrorist. If you are willing to take that chance just because you hate Bush so much then I am worried about the direction of this nation and it's people.

Here's a thought: Now this is "probably" not true. Let's imagine again that Obama was more than just an "aquaintance" with Ayers. Let's pretend him and Ayers plotted to get Obama in office so Obama could finish what Ayers failed to do. Ok, Ok, Ok ... don't get all upset. I said we were pretending. Like I said, this is "Probably" not the case. In fact, I wouldn't hesitate to say it is about 99.9% false ... kind of makes you wonder though. Condoms are 99.9% foolproof too.

Regardless of how we all feel about Bush. We really need to think about the future of our country. Obama isn't the right choice. There are too many question marks ... too many what if's ... too many "aquaintances".

    I do not trust Obama.

Some perspective is needed here. No one can defend or excuse terrorism. But a few things have been forgotten in the discussion:

-Ayers and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn, turned themselves in to the authorities in 1981, ready to accept the penalties for their actions. Hardly the actions of "unrepentant terrorists." They were never charged with committing terrorist acts, because there wasn't sufficient evidence to charge them. Neither has believed for decades, as evidenced by their careers in education and law, that armed action is the right way to achieve political ends.

-Ayers and Obama were "associated" with an educational project funded by the Annenberg Foundation. The project's board also included the former presidents of Northwestern University and Harvard's Graduate School of Education. This was no Weatherman bomb-making workshop--it was an educational reform organization with a mainstream agenda.

So why do Obama's critics portray him--the best-educated guy in the race, the candidate who has invested the most in his own intellectual development--as an empty vessel into which others pour their political view? Do they really think he's incapable of maintaining ideas and values different from anyone he associates with? And could they get away with saying this if he were white?

Shouldn't someone be investigating the organization that todd Palin was a part of for years and that his wife often attened meetings of that hated the US government so much they wanted alaska to succeed from the Union anex part of Canada and becoem a seperate nation?

Then just look at the organizations and people John McCain has consorted with ovwer the years.

Mr. Ayers even if he is unrepentent is no longer acting on his beliefs. He isa working within the system to create change for the good. The Annenberg Challenge, set up by a conservative Republican family would not have put Mr. Ayers on its board, or tolerated his bering there if they did not feel that he had something important to contribute and that his past views were irrelavant to the project.

Heck the State of Connecticut has iuts former Republican governor John Roland a convicted felon on its payroll pitchihng the virtues of the City of Waterbury.

It makes no difference whether Mr. Obama knew of Mr. Ayers association with the Weather Underground he would still have seerved on the Board of the challenge because it was important to him and the people he was serving. it was up to the people who recuited the board to disqualify him. also if a man lives in your nieghborhood and you work on the same project you will have a personal relationship with this person even if you don't agree with him.

Lets stop this awful guilt by association it is something everyone of us will loose-- we all can assocaited with someone who has a murky past-- besides it is how people like Hitler justified what they did. We as American's I hope are better than that.

With youth comes indiscretion and bad decision making. It's a rite of passage for many. Is Ayers a criminal on the lam today? No. People mature and rehabilitate themselves. While Ayers didn't do time, isn't a transformation like his the goal of our penal system? Why must people vilify others for things done so far in the past, when their more recent behavior demonstrates value to mankind.

Funny how McCain/Palin throws stones but forget McCain's poor judgment in handling the demise of his first marriage to his crippled wife, his poor performance in the Naval Academy, his involvement in the Keating 5 scandal and his involvement in the rush to war in Iraq. Maybe we should ask Palin why she attempted to ban books, exercised undue influence in the troopergate scandal, and created a Christian Heritage Week in Alaska. Terrorists come in many forms.

If you find this a reason not to vote for Obama you are just fooling yourself, because you're going to get far worse dishonesty in McCain/Palin -- proven out in spades this past month.

It'll be helpful if the two presidential candidates would lay out a tax cut plan in writing showing how it would benefit tax payers in different tax brackets (low-income, middle, and higher). Let them show a table, in details with full explanation for everyone's to understand instead of just keep on listening to talks and sweet promises about cutting taxes. Include also the details on their propose health plans. Then publish them both now in all the newspapers and journals throughout the United States, including Alaska Hawaii, before election. This would help the voters and non-voters understand the issue better particularly those who have little understanding about these matters who would cast their votes. By comparing their plans, voters would have an idea which plan is better and which candidate is most sincere, truthful and can be trusted.

Please can some assist interpret this "Ayers" issue to me. How does Obama knowing Ayers suddenly make him a bad guy? Some thinkings baffle me.

Now lets switch places in our imagination. How will the same people react if the tie was Ayers and McCain? Will it still carry more dust?

I guess it goes with the Chinese proverb that says "if you have no reason to kill the dog, then give the dog a bad name so it can be killed". Sorry Obama, its seems you needed to be "slaughtered" by the McCain camp, and since you are very clean, you needed to be handed a "bad" name. Sorry.

I truly can't believe that people who post on this site that appear from their words to be educated can honestly support Obama. This man is totally scarry as to his backgound, his record, his lack of any signaficant accomplishments, his judgement, and his associations. There is not one person from his backgrond, his college days, his work days, or his younger days that has come forward with any praise. His college records are sealed, his grades are sealed, and his personal associations are not public. Further investigation shows that Obama's wife and Ayres wife worked together for the same firm at the same time 20 years ago. Obama and Ayres had met at their wives company functions. 20 Years Ago!!
This is a matter of public record.

Further, you will find from public record that John McCain was exonarated of any wrong doing as a part of the Keating Five. BUT, BUT, a convicted member of the Keating Five is one of Obama's current advisors (Former Senator John Glen). When you go to the available public records (That would be the records that Obama couldn't get sealed)you find many disturbing questions.

It seems that the reason Sarah Palin is trying to make Ayers and Obama BFF's is to try and expose Obama's "hidden terrorist agenda" John McCain is asking the question "who is Barack Obama?" Is all of this suspose to be leading us to believe that Obama is part of a "sleeper cell" just waiting to become president so that he and his terrorists pals can take over our country? But if everyone would just take a deep breath and carefully listen to what is being said they would see the fundamental problem with this scenario - if there was such a plan - please someone explain why they would pick a black man with the name Barack Hussein Obama to infiltrate the office of the President of the United States. It just doesn't pass the smell test.
Barack Obama is NOT a "Manchurian Candidate" he is a real American. He loves this country. He will be one of our best Presidents. Yes we can!!

Ayers is just the tip of the iceburg. Who spends 20 years under the influence of a radical preacher(Wright), if you do not agree with his ramblings. What about the suspect tactics of Acorn. And now they are under investigation for numerous violations. There are just so many questions that he needs to set straight. I would expect the blinders to be on in Chicago, thats home court for Obama. They could care less if he killed somebody, because he speaks so nice and George Bush is the devil.

I am so surprised at this ignorant arrogant republicans in the US. Yes Obama knew Ayers. Yes he knew he is a former 'terrorist'. And yet Ayers is a dedicated citizen of America who will do whatever he can for the good of the people. My question is this. You cant forgive him, then God help America and its sins against the rest of the world!!
How close is Mcain to Bush, as someone rightly asked? The reason is that some of us think Goerge Bush and his friends are the worst kind of terrorists in the world. The ones with the power and freedom to fight who ever they choose to for their 'oil companies'. All they know is to label anyone who wont agree with them a terrorist nation and then attack, using phrases like 'u are either with us or against us' to threaten the rest of the world.

I suppose soon, you will want to know if Nelson Mandela too has endorsed OBama, given that he was listed a terrorist till a few months ago and yet he is seen in the whole wide world as a Hero and a freedom fighter.

Grow up people and see Bush/Mcain for who they are. You vote Mcain and in less than six months you will have an Iran war on yr hands and where will that leave your economy?? Further down the drain i suppose.

U want a war veteran who only thinks 'bombs and bombs', or u want a man with a vision to give world peace a chance by talking with the 'enemy'?

Remember, 'keep your friends close and your enemies closer'. Something Mcain doesn't believe in.

    Jessy, From South Africa

I feel the American people better think long and hard before voting. Are we to assume with our country in dire need, our children and eldery, with Obama in office the Africa continent will be taken care of.I feel sorry for those people but we need the help here first.I got this from Tuesdays debate suggestions.I heard someone say,As elders will we be sitting and telling our grandchildren about when America was free? Will we become a country forced to flee.He (Obama) has told so many different storys each time he speaks. I don't need more taxes.i read his books and it scares me,I see a man who will not salute our flag.A man who loves a church that hate white andon the church front page it says there allegience is not to us.If elected will he swear to all with his hand on our bible? How can he lead our country. My children worked hard for their e3ducation,and they have all fought for their country.Has he.How did he get into Harvard if they were so poorI know people who need food stamps but make ten dollars to much to qualify. When I was a child I saw people dancing and cheering in the streets and when I asked my Grandmother she said FDR was dead.To this day that has bothered me.I am a registered republican because I wanted to vote in the primary for someone.I grew up in a hard nosed democratic family that would vote for anyone if they were democrat.I vote for the persdn.I wasn't going to vote this year because of our choices but now I am hoping my vote will help keep one out.Maybe I should just vote for Mickey Mouse could he do worse?

You republicans are so damn stupid. You take things at a mere face value, and you say you are a party for religion and life. And now you dare judge Obama for his association with Ayers? What hypocrites. Let's look at Christianity, shall we? Didn't this happen to Jesus too? He was traipsing around with theives, the zealots, and the sinners. The Pharisees condemned him them. Jesus died, partly because of the condemnation. Now he's the center of a religion. So all you Repugs just make me shake my head at you ineptitude. I'm not even a Democrat, let alone, an American. But man, it's just sad to see all of you talk and think like you do. No wonder your entire country is digging itself to a grave.

I'm really surprised how a first-term Senator (who has served most of that time campaigning) with a thin resume and radical leanings as could be gleaned from his questioned associations could ever be put up by a major party as a possible US president. How unique is his vision of "change" that White America will swallow its pride and vote him into office? He ties his opponent to Bush, but so what? The latter isn't stupid to continue the failed policies of the past administration. Change is the obvious route to the future. And even as he professes to have what it takes to be president of the US, where is he going to draw the wisdom from if he has only his "community organizing" to show, never mind that it's organizing for a cause espoused by a friend who continues to root for radical causes? I don't believe that America is ready to vote a black president. More so, when one considers the qualities of the person seeking to be the first.

The Republican Party has turned into something dangerous and unrecognizable. Their tactics seem to have caused a rise in racial hatred and bigotry, especially in those states where discrimination are still prevalent and very strong. However, on the other side of the issue, is their efforts appear to be backfiring on them. Even some of their own supporters have become disgusted with their slimey tactics. McCain seems to be using Palin's skirttail to hide behind, thinking that just because she a cute, pixey cheerleader type she can get away with saying just about anything negative about the other side. Yet, her words aren't just negative they've proven to be even dangerous where when the spoke at a Florida rally GOP supporters were heard chanting "Kill him!" in reference to Obama. How much lower will the republican party sink? As if they can actually go any lower. And to think I once seriously considered voting for McCain if he ever ran for president. He appeared the most respectable and honorable of that party. Now he comes across as worse than those before him.

Look, for those who have an issue with Obama's affiliation with Bill Ayers, don't vote for him. Plain and simple. Honestly, I think if you're nitpicking this association, you internally don't want to vote for him. You're just looking for the external justification.

For me, I look at our war with Iraq. Our current president and vice president "misrepresented" information about Iraq having WMD (weapons of mass destruction) and led us into a war that we should have never gone into (had nothing to do with 9-11). We spend $10-12 Billion dollars a month on this war (at least $700 Billion dollars spent), but more importantly, we've lost the lives of American soldiers, more than the number of people who died during 9-11. I cry for the soldiers who so bravely fought for us and continue to fight, their families, and friends.

But here are the facts, the Senate released reports in the summer stating there was never any evidence of WMD (weapons of mass destruction) http://intelligence.senate.gov/press/record.cfm?id=298775 . Opps!!!! And John McCain supported this war and continues to support it. He wants victory. In his debates, the only thing off the table for cuts in economic spending is defense. He never acknowledges that Americans were basically lied to about this war and our tax-paying dollars support it (while our economy continues to collapse). Nobody but Barrack Obama mentions this. I don't hear the "nitpickers" nitpick this.

So while people are trying to dig and speculate that Obama has terrorist ties and is part of this terrorist conspiracy because of being on a board with Bill Ayers (which there is no evidence of any terrorism on Obamas's part), I would say consider the despicable acts which occur everyday under our current administration and falls lock-step with the policies of John McCain. Soldiers die because we're in a war based on "misrepresentation." And lastly, these policies have done far more damage to this country than any terrorist.

Savage64 - Are you not connecting the dots, here? Obama has been embracing these people in private and public...then when outted on it, 'denounces' everything about them. His arrogance in covering his lies has got to go down in history for being the most pompous brush off any politician has ever given in any campaign.

Why isn't he double digits ahead in the polls? The guy has out spent McCain $$ three to one in campaign funding. He's been out knocking on doors for two years. He has the media in his back pocket, burying the negative stories that come out on him...what few that ever make it to the mainstream news...in his back pocket. And yet, he is only ahead in the polls by a spitting distance.

WHY? Because people don't trust him. Honestly, I think the democrats could have put Hitler on the ticket and they would vote for him...just because he wasn't a Republican.

To Bob who posted on oct. 8th,

WHen you say you are 'not interested' in hearing attacks on mcCain, I had to laugh because it sounds like you know that's to be expected. Because McCain has given plenty of reasons for the American public to attack him!!! I'm not American and I still couldn't resist. :)

Believe me, I don't care whether anyone is Republican or Democratic. Like most international watchers, all I am interested in is international politics and good leadership. Sorry to say, McCain has been very very lame. I don't have to be American to see that.

Obama is NOT perfect but he's one heck of a human being compared to McCain. If he has to answer for ALL his past relationships (whether they are relevant or not) then why don't McCain and Palin do the same? It's not as if they have squeaky clean records!! Now if the Palin problem happened to Obama, mcCain supporters would jump on it with glee. Why the double standards?

If the Obama camp didn't practise restraint, everyone will forget about the economic issues at hand and start questioning everything trivial.

I have a personal take on this. One of my lecturers had a checkered political past but he is now a very respected academic whom students really love. So should the university fire him? If McCain is so concerend about Ayers, why doesn't he say that Ayers (or people like him) should be taken out of the education system? He doesn't give a damn about Ayers or his past actions. He just wants a tool to smear the opposition.

This is a totally SILLY isse at a crucial time like this. McCain's camp is trying last minute tactics to make voters question Obama and sadly it seems to be working to some extent!! Oh the blessing of rumours and biased gossip!!

One thing is for sure, if McCain is the next president of the US, there'll be many more nations (not only Iran and some LAtin American countries) seeing the US as a bully . Anyone who supports McCain after all the outrageous things he had said is a bully in my book. A silly bully!! :) I sure miss the America I was once in and cared about.

I think if we want to play the same game as the McCain's camp, then I would like to add on a couple of more things that was mentioned earlier by MN on October 8, 2008 1:08 PM

    7. McCain's ties to Gambling (giving huge tax break to casinos and he is known to be a lifelong gambler).

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/28/us/politics/28gambling-web.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1

and the final nail in the coffin for McCain...

    8. His voting record, voted the same way with the least popular president in our history, Bush, 90% of the times over the last 8 years...and 100% so far this year.

Senator Joe Biden is so right when he said today that McSame is no Maverick, all he is, is a 'sidekick' to the lame president we have now!!!!!

In all this story about Obama and Ayers, what bothers me most as a democrat is that we might win the election and end up putting in the White House the candidate we chose, only to realize he was less than honest with us. Why did Obama say when first asked "Ayers is someone who lives in my neighborhood"? If the whole relation with Ayers was so innocent why not say that he had worked with at the Chicago Anneberg Challenge? That he had been at his house? No, his answer was not a lie but it was less than honest and in a way stupid if it was just a simple working relationship. What else has he been less than honest about? I just don't want later surprises if we finally win back the White House.

The bottom line in all of this is both Ayers and Obama were not working on some clandestine radical attempt to overthrow the United States government. They instead were working within the system to help the poor people in Chicago.

When it comes to helping those who need help the most; those crying for a better life, you sometimes have to work with those who you do not agree with, unless you are George Bush, who instead of dealing constructively with our enemies, groups them into an "axis of evil" status and shuts the door on any discussion. Fact is, both Iran and North Korea, stepped up their arms build-up and rhetoric after being lumped into the evil status. Kim il Jung (sp) has always insisted on meeting with the United States directly. In fact, it's his own paranoia that he is defending against. A little hard love there could have gone a long way, particularly for the sufferring people in North Korea.

John McCain always proudly says that he is able to work with all sides. Yet, he will still close the door on truly working with adversaries. Barack Obama, in a convoluted way, has proven he can work with those he does not necessarily agree with.

As the world watches the, American people are being to look more and more like a Banna Republic, Please tell me what having dinner , a drink, lunch or meeting with some one whom bombed a federal building makes one unqualified to be President of the USA. The more you say it the bigger the joke becomes, what a buuch of morons

The real issue is not Sen.Obama working with Mr.Bill Ayers at the charity foundation in Chicago for about five years. All of us happens to work with convicted felons without knowing anything about it.My concern is that in 1995 Mr.Bill Ayers hosted a fundraiser in his own home in Chicago on behalf of Mr.Obama when he was about to run for State Senate. My question is; Who on earth will host a political fundraiser in his or her own home for someone he or her does not know very well.Mr Obama, please do not tell me Mr. Ayers is a guy who just live in your neighberhood. How come he hosted fundraiser for you but not me.

Many do not understand the "Underground", who they were and what they stood for. To me their extremist beliefs are much more my concern than "Acts of terror when I was 8". If their relationship runs deeper and extremist radicalism is Obama's true sentiment (Re. Wright, Farrakan, et. al.), this country may be in serious danger.

Who will Obama's political appointees be... radical extremists?

It is very apparent that Obama and his staff are trying to sweep this under a rug, rather than just being honest. Their story becomes more revealing every week... which indicates that perhaps there is more to the story, and they are hiding dangerous facts.

One thing that we do know... both are far off the scale to the left (look at Obama's voting record, not what he says). Obama has just learned to talk centerist.

    THAT is a concern!

I really don't understand what is happening to our country. Listen, BHO seems like a nice guy ok. Here is the deal. Ayers' helped launch BHO political career. Ayers' wanted to kill Americans, he wanted to kill Americans. The liberal response seems to be. "Well bush wants to kill Americans." Who knows, maybe he does. BHO affiliations I feel make him a horrible candidate. For the people who are sure they are voting for BHO nothing will change their minds. I really feel he would have to be a child molester, and that still may not be enough.

Personally being a soldier BHO scares me. He is weak and will be seen as weak by those who wish to hurt us.

For all of the above that advocate turning the other cheek, or dis me for being a hypocrite for not turning the other cheek...
Bill Ayers has not apologized for his terrorist actions, in fact in September 2001 he reasserted his wish that he had succeeded in those actions, and even wished he/they, The Weathermen, had committed more acts of terrorism. By his own admission, Obama was still associating with Ayers until 2002.

Ayers is now a prominent Prof. (warts an a witch's nose are prominent too!) in Chicago with considerable influence on Chicago's urban education policy. An unrepenetant terrorist influencing education of Chicago children, seems horrifying similar to the radical Islamist terrorist's influence of education of Pakistani children in the madrassas of Waziristan, Pakistan.

"It's not important to prove how chummy Obama was with Ayers, or even how many times they met. This is a significant part of Obamas' resume, but one he doesn't talk about much, except in very general terms of Community Organization."

I see where you are going on this and you are simply doing what McCain wants us to do and what Chris Matthews says..."to complete the dots"

Look, I do trust to some degree the braintrust of the Democratic Party or at least I trust their judgement. I don't believe that Barack Obama has fooled any of them. Why? Because he isn't what the right is making him out to be. His "change" is NOT revolutionary change. The fearmongers will do anything to further their own facist endeavors. And we are the fools to keep voting them in and getting kicked in the butt afterwards.

    The Republicans loooove throwing stones.

Seriously, who cares about Ayers? No one but Sean Hannity and people who watch FOX. These people are close minded and hated Obama to begin with because of his skin color and the fact that he has a different name. They would never vote for him anyway. I personally think the Keating 5 story is more relevant than this Ayers stuff. But I don't think Americans truly care about either one. Americans care about the economy and the war in Iraq. McCain "pals" around with Bush, which to me is reason enough to not vote for him.

Republicans, keep talking about Ayers. That means you aren't talking about the economy while everyone else is. You are digging your own graves with this childish story.

    Obama/Biden 08!

I didn't go to college! I didn't graduate from Harvard!

I sure as hell had heard of Ayers and Dohrn. If you were in the vicinity of one of their bombs I'll bet you would never forget.

Obamer pleads ignorance in so many incidents and the nerwspapers WILL not delve into his background as they did to Gov. Palin. Democrats are given a free pass by their allies in the media. The media covered for Clintoon. They sat on his scandal for six months hoping to cover it up as they had covered up JFK's sexual excesses.

The difference between someone that committed a crime "whether it was years ago or yesterday" is, are they repentant of what they did! Bill Ayer is not and he even brags about it! The other problem is, BO never disassociates himself from these people until the media brings it up several times or he thinks it could hurt his campaign. Like with his pastor Mr. Wright! Wake up people!

Obama certainly knew in 2001 when he served on a board with Ayers that Ayers was a radical domestic bomber. It was in 2001 that Ayers said he had not done enough bombing.
This goes to question the judgment of Obama to not have known the background of Ayers in 1995. He certainly would have spouted his radicalism even then and that was not a clue to Obama? This is someone who wants to guide America with that naivete.
Radicalism is no stranger to Obama as in 2006 he was in Kenya speaking for his cousin Odinga who led a massacre there after losing the election. Wake up America!

Lenore Annenberg, the widow of the founder of the Annenberg Challenge, Walter Anneneberg donated to John McCain's campaign in 2008. Does that make John McCain a terrorist or does it make Walter and Lenore Annenberg terrorists? Surely, they knew of Bill Ayers background when they agreed to give money to a program he was working on. By connecting the dots, it's clear John McCain is a terrorist.

Oh, John McCain is a murderer, too. He wrote a letter in support of an ex-Alabama state trooper who murdered a black man during the civil rights movement. By the standard that the McCain Palin campaign has set he is a murderer and a supporter of hate crimes.

To be a pro is to re-meld within a system and be accepted by the likes of the weak-minded. To help a condemned person is holy, but accepting an ex-radicals association with a presidential candidate is stupid. Please get some common sense; I understand it’s difficult when there isn’t a book telling you what’s what.
It does not matter what you think you know about how much time he's spent with him, you are a fool.

RECOGNIZE!!! OBAMA IS DOING THE BIGGEST BAIT AND SWITCH KNOWN TO MAN KIND!!!

    Do not be suckered.

    Vote McCain

Obama is winning the race because he has sincerely connected with the open-minded majority looking for a new future. His gift to inspire is rare and who can deny that at this time we need a leader who will help pull us together instead of drive divisions and sit back as we turn against one another? We need a leader who will help pull us together and build a society where people can work hard and afford a mortgage, health care, access to quality education and the safety to retire comfortably when we mature beyond our working years.

He is thoughtful and knowledgeable yet he understands there is always something to learn and adjustments must be made as issues develop. He's confident but self-deprecating enough to be an effective leader, knowing that no one is omniscient. This is why he surrounds himself with sharp minds and experts to weigh in on the issues. He encourages feedback and welcomes innovative ideas. He is our best chance to steer us back in the direction of the healthy democratic society we could be; The country that helps others rather than bullies them, the country that makes tough but morally responsible military decisions, that takes care of it's citizens and works as a system where if you work hard, you can make it. You can own a home, have affordable health care that protects you instead of looking for reasons to deny claims in order to be profitable.

What does the Obama/Ayers "connection" have to do with anything? Even if Obama knew about Ayers’ past, what difference would this make? Do you suppose Obama and Ayers are conspiring to take down the government and install communism? Where is this "story" going, because I don't see that it makes a difference to anyone except the McCain/Palin campaign and their attempt to gain votes with character assassination? With the global economic crisis hitting the fan thanks to an explosion of greed enabled by the policies of deregulation and no oversight on Wall Street, we are rescuing the rich so they can keep their swimming pools and classic car collection while the "regulation" of Main Street has given the government license to tap our phones and spend our tax dollars investigating us as possible terrorists. Collapsing bridges and school closures prove our infrastructure has gone ignored. Families in desperate need of help because of rising jobless rates and soaring health care costs don't have the option of a bailout plan. People who did the right thing by working hard and squeezing their family budget in attempt to pay a mortgage and taxes until they could no longer afford it because they got sick and/or lost their job, thereby losing their home and ended up living in a tent village have no golden parachute, no bailout.

The MSM is officially owned by the dangerously unqualified squawkings of Sarah Palin, et al. The real danger here is the drumming up of a lynch-mob mentality by the GOP. Since they have nothing to offer us of substance, they offer us garbage and the MSM dutifully spreads said garbage all over the space that should be reserved for what is really happening.

Sarah Palin goes to public forums with a can of gas and a book of matches to light up the anger of her base and sit back while supporters yell, "kill him!" in response to her toxic and irresponsible statements against Obama. Even McCain was taken aback momentarily as one of his supporters said he's a "terrorist" in response to his question, "who is Obama?" McCain paused and furrowed his brow a little, but he didn't respond with something responsible and professional like, "No. Come on, he's not a terrorist. I'm only questioning his politics, not his character." The MSM delivers the GOP's garbage to us as news, then certain vapid reporters waste our time sifting through it looking for some loose change they can pawn off as valuable information with substance.

MSM, do everyone a favor and stop being a parrot of advertisement for political tabloid trash. Do your job by giving us something substantial to edify and enrich our knowledge of national and global current events. Have the courage to rock the corporate boat by investigating and reporting events that affect our economy, our lives, give us deeper insight into global events and how we fit into the bigger picture. You blew it in 2003 with your collective sales pitch for the Iraq war. It’s time you redeem yourselves.

"As societies grow decadent, the language grows decadent, too. Words are used to disguise, not to illuminate, action: you liberate a city by destroying it. Words are to confuse, so that at election time people will solemnly vote against their own interests." - Gore Vidal

One Nation Under? We are failing because we tossed the most important word out. People make an informed decision. Obama is not the answer and if elected this is the begining of the end there will be no debating.

We strive on unethical behavior, the media loves it, congress ignores it, and which hollywood actor wants to run for a president. We are all fools who vote this people in office and it all steems from the one nation under fill in your name.

Aers political views.[wikipedia source bill ayres]in an interview published in 1995, Ayers characterized his political beliefs at that time in the 60's 70's i am a radical, leftist communist. maybe i am the last communist who is willing to admit it. communism still appeal to me. idon't like Lenin as much as early Marx.Ialso like Henry David Thoreau.Ayers founding document called for the establishment of a "white fighting force"to be aligned with the "black liberation movement"and other "anti colonial movements"to achieve "the destruction of U.S. imperialism and the achievement of a classless world:world communism. 1995 same year barac started his politacal career[or movement]

So if Bin Laden stays on the lam long enough, and then gets a teaching degree, then he will no longer be a terrorist.

William Ayres is not sorry; he said so as we have all heard as late as 2002. He's still hates America's government; his views are still radical. Look, in the 60's there was a radical violent move to over-throw the government. It didn't work. So those people went into other venues to do just that. Ayres is the same person he was; just slicker and wiser. Of course Obama knew. He sat on boards with him, they chatted, got to know each other; and they were friends. Now if it was just that one friendship okay, but let me make a list for you: Wright, Ed Said, Rashid Khalidi, Ayres, ACORN, Soros, Rezko. All of these people are Arabs, all of them are pro-Palestinian. Come on people. This isn't a friend, it's a click. They share the same views and ideologies. And let's add Fannie,Freddie, Lehman, Goldman, AIG. There's just too much, too, too much about Senator Obama. And from what I have read about his responsiblities on the Annenberg initiatives - - Senator Obama is no CFO, I'll tell you that. He spent money like he was playing monopoly, and you've heard how much he's requested in ear marks. Chicago - - what has Senator Obama done for your state? Why isn't your state and his city of Chicago in better shape? We better get a grip here.

Resko- Just a man I did a couple of hours of work for, Obama states at debate. LIE

Ayers - Just a neighbor, who was on a board with me for a little while, I had no personal relationship with him. LIE
    See CNN report @
    http://justsaynodeal.com/index2.html

Rev Wright- I never heard him say any controversial anti american remarks in the 20 years I knew him. LIE

    Acorn- ????????????

    Odingo- ???????????

Does this guy have any nice friends?
    The company you keep.......

Christian-bashers: you have no idea what the Scriptures say or mean, believe me. Look up "accuser of the brethren" (satan) and you'll discover who is speaking through you. John Hagee is, in spite of silly and non-authored books that he sells, a simple guy that's a pastor. Period. No terrorism... contrary to Amanpour's CNN "God's Warriors" report that you may have swallowed along with your kool-aid. I worked in the South Side of Chicago in late '60's: it was rife then with marxist Liberation theology. I was naive - in a religious R.C. order- and didn't know "come here from sic'em" but I certainly know now what these "community agitators" were all about. Some in our class went to Nicaragua to help the Sandinista's (marxists) with their "gov. housing". Hey - it's a revolution and they're about to spring it on the American people on the pretense of "racism"...the media is already going there so be forewarned.

Poor Obama, he is so clueless about the obvious. He did not know Bill Ayers was former domestic terrorist who blew up government buildings, sat in Rev. Wright's church for 20 years and never had any idea that he was listening to hate speech coming from the pulpit. Also I guess he thought ACORN was some kind of play group that he had heard of in conversation but didn't know they were a leftist group who used unwary and homeless people (plus dead people and dogs) to get out the vote and to vote numerous times.

    What next?

I am two years older than Obama and did no grow up in Chicago either. I have never been involved with radicals or radical politics yet I have known who Ayers and Dohrn were for decades. Obama was either clueless or he just didn't care.

The one thing he definitely knew about was the capability of ACORN to round up voters. How nice that his campaign donated $800k to ACORN and disguised that contribution in his FEC disclosure as one made to a front group called "Citizens Services, Inc for "advance work".Obama worked as executive director of ACORN’s voter-registration arm, Project Vote, in 1992. Joined by two other community organizers on Chicago’s South Side, Obama conducted the voter-registration drive that helped elect Carol Moseley-Braun to the Senate that year.
The next year, 1993, Obama joined the civil-rights law firm Davis Miner Barnhill & Galland, where he sued the state of Illinois on behalf of ACORN to implement the federal “Motor Voter” law, which the GOP governor at the time refused to do. Then-Gov. Jim Edgar argued, presciently, that the Clinton law would invite voter fraud.
Obama downplays his ties to ACORN, and his campaign denies coordinating with ACORN to register voters.

There are people commenting here who are obviously never going to change their vote for Obama. Even if McCain had a picture of Obama plainting a bomb at the Pentagon with Ayers, they would simply insert their heads in the sand, or somewhere lese dark, and go vote for Obama.

The connection to Ayers is not about whether or not Obama was there when he was 8. Its about judgement and its about who Obama really is. Many people in the country are not die-hard leftists and are curious about Obama. After all, he has no real record other than his association with leftist causes and voting with the liberal Democrats 97% of the time.

Who is Barack Obama, this guy trying to sound like a centrist now? Look at his position changes over the last 2 years. He said he would take public funding when it sounded populist, then changed his mind. Now he is getting millions of dollars in illegal campaign contributions. Lefties excuse it because, after all, this really intelligent guy can't know who all of these donors are, can he? And his association with ACORNm, now accused of widespread voter fraud must be outside his wealth of knowldge too, right?

He changes his tune on drilling, nuclear power, speaking with the leaders of Iran, North Korea, Syria and Cuba, invading Pakistan, Russia's invasion of Georgia and a number of other issues. He has simply not settled on a position on Iraq...he will withdraw in 16 months...starting when exactly?

Ayers may be respected in Chicago, but he is not respected anywhere else. He is a traitor and a terrorist. Nothing shows he has changed his views on America, although he may have changed his tactics. And that is where Obama comes in. Is Obama sympathetic to the causes of William Ayers? He is clearly not being truthful about his relationship with Ayers.

This is not a distraction. The economy is a problem, but just who we elect to solve it depends on what each man stands for. In a solution to the credit crisis, do we want to istall a socialist government that will strip our free enterprise system? It is Obama who is using the economy as a distraction. He does not want us to know who he is or what he really stands for. You can judge the character of a man by who he associates with. I don't associate with criminals or terrorists, do you?

McCain may know G Gordon Liddy, but Liddy was never accused of planting bombs to kill Americans. If McCain was a "pal" of Timothy McVay I am sure Obama would make it an issue.

After all, isn't it the left who tried to smear Palin by claiming she supported Pat Buchanan? Wasn't it the left that accused Palin of being a member of the AIP? Both charges were proven false, but the accusations still have not stopped. And these associations arenothing compared to who Bill Ayers is.

The Ayers story is far more serious and people outside the extreme left want a president who does not find reknowned terrorists to be associates ot celebrities to bend elbows with.

Negative adds tells us that McCain has no vision. That is the question
that is raised when someone chooses to run 100% negative adds in times
    when vision is needed.

What when he is whinning the election he whould be president
he will also seeks negative war solutions for the USA

Only bad leaders and regimes run negative adds and solution.
History an China, Old Russia Hitler Germany are endless examples
of these conspiracy ennemy and racial solutions. Cynically the
intensify when the leader actually needs vision and got stuck.

Negative adds show no respect and that is the basis of bad regime like
    racism.

Good luck and it is your task as a journalist to fight for decency. A
lot of people in the world watch and see that USA looses respect
amoung the leaders and therefore it is hard to respect the USA. Please
show respect and guide us. We need each other.

I've been reading on the Obama, Ayers and I've been talking with some co-workers and I've come to the conclusion that the people that are saying you're trying to condemn Obama for something that Ayers did when he was "8" is like saying in about 30 years it will be perfectly alright to run for president while being friends with Bin Laden. If you think about it it's the same concept since they are both labeled as terrorists but people are making excuses because it happened when he was a kid and the Ayers no longer takes part in terrorist activities.
So, I guess if Bin Laden reforms then in 30 years people in the US won't think twice about what he did and his friendship he could have with a presidential candidate. I'm just wondering what the difference is that Obama and his strategists see that they can explain it's ok to befriends with any terrorists, though they might have reformed, and be able to hold such a high position.

You know, I am not racist, but I have had deep misgivings about Obama ever since I became aware he was running. I never knew quite what it was that made me against him, but now, with this Ayers thing I know that I was right all along, and that he isn't to be trusted.

THE REAL RELATIONSHIP WE SHOULD WORRY ABOUT

Let's be very clear. The truth is yes, Barack Obama was on the Board of Directors for the Chicago Anneneberg Challenge. William Ayers helped to write the grant proposal that this group used to land $49.2 MILLION for the Chicago public schools. Where did this money come from? It was donated by Walter Annenberg, a lifelong Republican who served as the US Ambassador to the UK under President Richard Nixon and is well-known to have been good friends with Ronald Reagan.

At the end of the day, this relationship has brought much needed money into the public schools of one of our biggest cities.

There's also another truth. John McCain has been voting in lockstep with the Bush Administration over the last eight years, endorsing Bush's foreign policy and financial strategies. What has this cost the American taxpayer? We're currently spending of $10 BILLION PER MONTH to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq, wars that have lasted longer then World War I or World War II. Thousands of young Americans have given their lives in a war that John McCain said would be quick and easy with the Iraqis, "greeting us as liberators." And the deregulation of the financial markets helped get us into another situation that is costing us an additional $700 BILLION.

Now tell me, which relationship has had a more damaging effect on our country? I don't think it would take any of us too long to realize that we are much worse off now then we were eight years ago. And as much as the Republicans try to lay blame on the Democrats, common sense always tells us that whoever was in charge is to blame. The blame is rightfully fixed on the policies of George W. Bush, policies that John McCain has supported time and time again.

If there's a relationship that we should really question, it is John McCain's allegiance to George W. Bush.

I thikn that most people dont make the connections that really need to be made. Obama's circle of friends speak very clearly about the kind of man he is. I understand very well that he has his own beliefs and philosophys. I actually respect that. But the beliefs that Obama embraces are clearly not based on the principles that are laid out in our constitution. He wants to continue to rebuild America into what he feels is appropriate. I cannot bring myself to respect that. ''I grow weary of people that talk bad about our founders.....saying that they dont need another "old white man" to lead this country. Well, I think that the old white men that founded this country did a pretty damn good job. Unfortunatly, the bleeding heart liberals are not able to comprehend the wisdom that was exercised in the building of this great country.
Our founders had the knowledge and experience behind them to understand what kinds of government dont work, and they also had a keen understanding of human nature. The socialist agenda that seems to be overtaking this country is not in keeping with the spirit of what the founders intended, and history shows that it is destined to fail.
I worry about the future of this country if ignorant people continue to embrace the utopian pipedream that is being promised by the likes of Obama. He is definatly "change", but change is not always a good thing. We need to return to theprinciples that made this country great. How about instead of the government telling us what it is going to do for us, instead it encourages hard work, high moral codes, responsibility, honor, committment??? It is not the governments purpose to provide for its people. THe government cannot give you anything that it doesnt first take from someone else. Wake up America!!!!!

Describing Bill Ayers as an "unrepentant terrorist turned professor" doesn't take into consideration the man behind the label.

I came across this excerpt from one of his books, To Teach: The Journey of a Teacher.

"Before I stepped into my first classroom as a teacher, I thought teaching was mainly instruction, partly performing, certainly being in the front and at the center of classroom life. Later, with much chaos and some pain, I learned that this is the least of it – teaching includes a more splendorous range of actions. Teaching is instruction, advising, counseling, organizing, assessing, guiding, goading, showing, managing, modeling, coaching, disciplining, prodding, preaching, persuading, proselytizing, listening, interacting, nursing, and inspiring. Teachers must be experts and generalists, psychologists and cops, rabbis and priests, judges and gurus. And that’s not all. When we face ourselves, we face memories of our own triumphs and humiliations, of our cowardice and bravery, our breakthroughs and breakdowns, our betrayals as well as our fidelity. When we characterize our work – even partially, even incompletely – straightforward images and one-dimensional definitions dissolve, and teaching becomes elusive, problematic, often impossibly opaque.

"One thing becomes clear enough. Teaching as the direct delivery of some preplanned curriculum, teaching as the orderly and scripted conveyance of information, teaching as clerking, is simply a myth. Teaching is much larger and much more alive than that; it contains more pain and conflict, more joy and intelligence, more uncertainty and ambiguity. It requires more judgment and energy and intensity than, on some days, seems humanly possible. Teaching is spectacularly unlimited.

"When students describe us, the picture becomes even denser and more layered. Teachers are good and bad, kind and mean, unjust and fair, arbitrary and even-handed, thoughtful and stupid. For our students, we embody the adult world and we are, next to parents, among the strongest representatives and guides into that world. The hopes and dreams of youth are in our hands; their goals and aspirations are shaped through their encounters with us. Positive memories of teachers are reserved for particular and special people: the teacher who touched your heart, the teacher who understood you or who cared about you as a person, the teacher whose passion for something – music, math, Latin, kites – was infectious and energizing. In any case, teachers are a large presence in the lives of students; we take up a lot of space and we have a powerful impact. This is why I chose teaching: to share my life with young people, to shape and touch the future."

I think there is a lot more to this man who has been besieged by the media and Obama's opponents. Maybe this is the price he has to pay for his actions in the 60's. But we should also take into account his work toward promoting education, just as the Annenbergs did.

Barack Obama has so many bad names associated with him. I don't care which you pick, but they can't all be irrelevant. But that's not why I'm not voting for him. I'm not voting for him because you really don't have to look that far to find Obama's extremism.

I can only imagine HOW the media would be IF this was Bush's association with Ayers!
Did Ayers ever pay for the deaths that the bombings caused like Timothy McVey did??
Why does Ayers get off so lightly?
Do those types of personalities ever really change? YES it does matter that Obama is associated with him. AND I AM NOT VOTING FOR OBAMA!!

    Who is John McCain?

Yesterday after a week of hateful anti-Obama events, McCain told supporters that Obama is a decent man, and that that they shouldn't be scared if Obama becomes Presidents. But McCain approves the ads that claim Obama supports terrorism.

    The Ayers-McCain connection.
They both received money from the Annenbergs. Should McCain denounce the Annenbergs who hired Ayers. Should he claim that the Annebergs suppport domestic terrorism? Why has McCain not returned the money he received from the Annenbergs? Annenberg was an Ambassador during the Reagan years.

Should McCain denounced or returned the money he has received from CAC Board member and former Nixon Assisant labor Secretray Arnold Weber?

My opinion is that Obama's association with a wide variety of people is what makes him the most effective in dealing with our problems at home and in the world. Understanding others' viewpoints enables him to address foreign governments knowing their interests and reach an agreement that helps solve global problems with diplomacy instead of war.
This ability will serve him with U.S. Congress as well.

If anything shows that John McCain is just another Bushie, these baseless and distracting attacks certainly shows this to be the case. His little Alascan cutie VP candidate uses the term "palin around" with terrorist carelessly and with no regard for the truth. How in the hell can you trust someone like that? I have heard republicans repeat these same accusations as if they were the gospal. How sad when the rightous relious right can figure out what a true christian is really about. Of course we heathen leftist, who can actually reason without Fox news input, know nothing of God. I have also heard Obama is trying to buy the election; Are the republican voters for sale then? Do they know how they are perceived by their own party?
I used to respect John McCain, but no more. He has shown a side that tells me he is just another far right republican, and no more a maverick then George W. What a load of crap.

When I ever see an Obama Biden sign I think of Obama Limboden....(lim-Bod-In)
What do you think this means?

If Obama found out that Mr. Ayers had been a member of the Weathermen thirty years ago what was he supposed to do with that information? Ayers had long ago given up those activities and became a productive citizen of the community. At any rate there is no information that Obama "palled" around with him. And Obama was not himself a member of the Weathermen. I don't think the Weathermen had a jr. league to which Obama could have belonged. This issue only had legs because McCain/Palin could not have denied that they where Republicans. And the last twenty years have proven that Republicans do not know how to govern the country. That phrase "Obama palls around with terrorists" was the one thing above all that people said made them opposed to Obama. I can't tell you how many times I heard the phrase drop from their fat little mouths.
