Obama on McCain mocking him for call to inflate tires: "They need to do their homework."

Hat tip Ben Smith at Politico for the video.

In Berea, Ohio, Obama turned McCain's attacking him for suggesting--very prudently, I think--that we keep our tires inflated to conserve oil--on end.

"They're lying about what my energy plan is," Obama said. And "they're making fun of a step that every expert says would reduce our oil consumption by 3 to 4 percent. It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant. You know, I mean they think it's funny that they are making fun of something that is actually true.

"They need to do their homework. Because this is serious business. Instead of running ads about Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, they should go talk to some energy experts and actually make a difference."

Claiming that tire inflation is Obama's entire energy policy is the latest example of the use of a common strategy: Distortion of an opponent's position to make it sound ridiculous. Of course, Obama's point was that tire inflation would actually contribute more to meeting our needs for oil than off-shore drilling.

Perhaps the real problem with Obama's suggestion is that oil companies don't make any money from it.

There are a lot of little things we all can do that would make a big difference to lessen our dependency on foreign oil. The simple act of properly inflating one's tires is one of them. Driving less, using public transportation more, biking or walking when feasible are other good ways. McCain just sounds desperate.

Oh please, McCain's tire pressure joke was just a creative & humorous way to try to raise money. Anyone with half a brain can find out that keeping your tires properly inflated can reduce fuel comsumption. The underlying point to be made is that Obama's energy plan has nothing more substantial than steps such as these. While these efforts are important, where's Obama's plan for dealing with large companies that repeatedly waste resources & destroy the environment? The USA isn't the only contributor to global warming either - China has been limiting industry for over a month in and around Beijing and STILL has major air quality problems - if any city in the US did this, the air would be perfect! Together, China and India contribute a large amount of the emissions behind global warming - what's Obama's plan for them?

Bravo. It is this kind of response that will bring this election to a close.

McCain do you support ignorance?

McCain does not support ignorance which is why he made the joke about Obama and tire inflation. he realized that Obama HAS NO energy policy other than reducing consumption by obvious measures that most already practice. We should have been drilling offshore for the last ten years. Obama thinks that the US is the only polluter in the world, yet people DIE from drinking water from the Yangtze in China. We should not sign a treaty to reduce pollution unless the major polluters China and India sign also. Let rock star Obama have his publicity, but he has no platform for improvements that any 8th grader has not done.

JOHN MCCAIN'S SPEECH AT THE GOP CONVENTION WILL
PUT EVERYONE TO SLEEP INCLUDING THE RODENTS!
HE IS IN WAY OVER HIS HEAD, AND HE KNOWS IT,
THAT'S WHY HE HAS RESORTED TO A NEGATIVE CAMPAIGN,
HE MEANT WELL AT THE BEGINNING, BUT LOSING TO
BUSH 8 YEARS AGO, AND NOW THIS, AND ALSO NOT
BEING AN ADMIRAL LIKE HIS GRANDDADDY AND DADDY,
HE IS LIKE A WOUNDED ANIMAL, AND YOU KNOW WHAT
THEY ARE LIKE, HE WON'T TAKE HIS WHIPPING LIKE A
MAN, HE WILL SPEW VENOM UNTIL HE IS COUNTED OUT!
ENJOY YOUR RETIREMENT JOHN, YOU HAVE BEEN IN THE
SENATE 26 YEARS AND OBAMA HAS YOUR NUMBER, GOOD
LUCK IN YOUR FUTURE ENDEAVORS!

This Canadian is so pleased that Obama responded to McCain's ignorance. It's true there is a big change coming and as a citizen of this earth, I'm relieved that Obama and his like will be leading the way.

Not everyone will inflate their tires. Maybe 10% will. And how many will run out the door and trade their old car for a much more expensive fuel-efficient car. The point is that a plan based on what "everybody" should do is not a plan. Nor is relying on the development of future technology years from now. Planes, trucks, and cars run primarily on gas .... now. What has Obama offered for now? Nothing but inflate your tires.

maybe some exposure to something other than faux news will help.
