Mark Bennett, a Democratic National Committee canvasser, was knocking on doors in northwest Washington D.C. Tuesday looking for donations for Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign. He stopped by chance at the home of Chicago Sun-Times Washington Bureau Chief Lynn Sweet. Here's his pitch.

You've got the wrong video up. I really want to see the pitch.

Lynn: I'm sorry but you've been had. This is the oldest trick in the book. Morton Blackwell taught us this 15 years ago. To get free press, just so happen to have campaign activity in a neighborhood of a local media person.

I used this tactic in Galesburg in 2006 when I was trying to get good press for Andrea Zinga. I had Knox College students work the neighborhoods of the publisher and main political reporter on two seperate weekends. It resulted in the paper asking for a reporter to walk with Andrea as a candidate door to door and write an article on the experience. Some of the best free press we got for the entire campaign.

Here is the article:

I tried to donate a penny in order to get into the dinner date with Obama lottery, but the Obama for America site wouldn't take anything less than $5.00.

So, the solicitor's get a cut of the cash once they hit that majic number + $130??. What a wonderful way to promote a great America, full of opportunity and representation by a conglomorate PR machine wanting to run this country, while making a few extra bucks for law school. Grass root's? or opportunist's.

Of course, recruiting law students as campaign beggar's will only increase their opportunities after graduation.

He is paying them all to canvas

I can see why he needs so much money then.

Would be nice to see a list of all the people he pays.

Interesting--thanks

Fake wives. Fake campaigners.

Obama pays field staff organizers but not individual canvassers. These people are volunteers. I know - I do it every weekend in Brooklyn. I know New York is already solid blue, but this kind of work ensures that it will NEVER be red. I know Republicans are aghast at the concept of volunteer work, but the reality is that actual real world organizing, and not whining on blogs, is why Dems will win this election.

Righto, Jon. And this former Hillary supporter is waiting to see how she's treated before before getting back out into the REAL WORLD of campaign work for the dems where I've BEEN WORKING the past 30 plus years.
Or not.

I RECIEVED A LETTER FROM THE DNC/BARACK OBAMA
CAMPAIGN FOR CHANGE.
WE HAVE HAD A GOOD LAUGH ABOUT THE SAPPY LETTER ASKING FOR OUR MONEY.
JESSIE JACKSON SAID OBAMA TALKED DOWN TO BLACK PEOPLE. WELL, I'VE GOT NEWS FOR YOU JESSIE. HE TALKS DOWN TO ALL PEOPLE. AT LEAST THAT LETTER WAS NOT FOR ANYONE OVER THE AGE OF 10.
MY 13 YEAR OLD GRANDSON SAID HE WOULD NOT GET A GOOD GRADE IF HE TURNED IN A PAPER THAT WAS SO REPETATIVE, AND LACKED ANY SUBSTANCE WHAT SO EVER. NO THANKS BARACK I CAN'T SUPPORT YOU AND I CAN'T SUPPORT THE DNC ANY MORE. I BELIEVE IN ALL VOTES BEING COUNTED AND I DON'T LIKE THE BACK ROOM DEALS THAT PUT MR. OBAMA IN AS THE NOMINEE.

GOSH, I THOUGHT MY LETTER SOUNDED PRETTY GOOD.
I GUESS IF I HAD LIKED OBAMA IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN PRINTED'--OH WELL I'LL GO BACK THE BEN SMITH.

Let me get this straight. This "grass roots" campaigner get paid if he makes over 130 dollars?

That doesn't sound very grass roots to me.

I really can't believe these bitter Hillary supporters and their silly conspiracy theories. I live in Nebraska. This is red as red can be. Bush still had a positive approval rating here until fairly recently (if it's not still positive). But on caucus night this year I saw something incredible. Hundreds of Democrats gathered in the same room, excited to be invited back into the political process, interested in the candidates and their arguments, and ready to actually work hard to revive the Democratic party in this state. What was the breakdown? 70-30 for Obama. The reason he won the nomination is that he could inspire that in a state where most people hide the fact that they are Democrats. He won the nomination because he ran the FAR superior campaign, hired the more mature, less selfish staff, and created and then steadfastly followed the better strategy. They won because Hillary ("Ready on Day One") couldn't manage her own campaign, with diverse voices going in their own directions and stabbing each other in the back. The so called power-house, inevitable candidate got beat by a better politician, a better organizer, a better orator, and by a more enthusiastic set of supporters who believe in the future that his leadership offers the country.

I'm sorry that you're bitter that Hillary lost. She's a great woman who deserves our respect, but by putting Obama down, you're not respecting her. He beat her fair and square under the rules that she and her campaign agreed to BEFORE the election. That was their bad strategy, but it shows a severe lack of integrity to deny that the system was one all agreed to, it worked the way it was supposed to, and Barack Obama won the delegates necessary to be the party's nominee. Seriously, get over it.

Or don't - and suffer the consequences of a McCain administration. I'm a young, attractive, white, upwardly-mobile man with multiple degrees - I'm going to be fine, my body will be fine, my pocketbook will be fine under a McCain administration. The people who will be most hurt are the same people pining away for Hillary. You, not I, have the most to lose. And if you think that she will be the nominee in 2012 - forget it, given the way that her "supporters" and her husband continue to act (sore losers) - there is no hope for them in any future Democratic primary. I'll just have to wait and hopefully vote for Chelsea some day.

You guys are so pitiful. They are volunteers... they don't get paid. I know because I'm an Obama Fellow... all we did was go for training for 3 days and that was it. No one gets paid.
Sometimes it amazes me how ignorant and guliable people can be sometimes.. Must explain how we ended up with two years of BUSH.

And to the person who said they are a Hillary supporter that is "waiting to see how she will be treated"... get grip on some sanity... and hold on tight. Hillary lost. Get OVER IT! Her campaign didn't plan for the races after Super Tuesday and she fell short on delegates. That's why she lost 11 states in a row... and that's her fault. Not Obama's. She ended her campiagn with $30 Million in the hole... and not only that, but Barack is helping to pay off HER DEBT! Do you think she would do the same for him? NO! Clinton's think only about themselves, and Hillary is proving that right now.

Ed--I don't want the repugs in power anymore.
Why should I just SHUT UP AND ENJOY how the Dems are screwing this thing UP?
Don't get me wrong---part of me really really suspects the PUMA folks are repuglicans.
I'm not.
I believe in democracy.
And the party I've served for so long.
It was, however, a matter of a dead heat and a selection at the end of the primary campaign.
Hillary would have had a 20 point lead now!
Picking Biden would be following further the trend to the RIGHT
recipe for disaster Michael Moore warns about:
http://www.michaelmoore.com/mustread/index.php?id=1036

Having said that---Moore was WRONG to tell the left that Hillary was not the candidate because of the arm twisting she buckled to. A President is NOT SUPPOSED TO LIE.
Can we PLEASE focus on the REAL ENEMY.
Can we please IMPEACH THEM?
RUN AS LIBERALS?
Ron Susskind’s blockbuster about REAL EVIDENCE that we cannot IGNORE about the lies that brought us into WAR!!!

Hope this will be brought up at the convention.

I used to do this. These are most definitely not volunteers. These are employees of a political consulting firm contracted by the DNC to do door to door and street level (talking to people on a street corner) fundraising. You make money by raising money. You have a daily quota of $130 so as long as you average that much per week then you will be paid a set rate. The incentive is that as you go beyond that minimum quota you begin to trigger bonuses based on how much you raise. So you can make decent money doing this. I believe that the DNC ends up pocketing about 20% of what is raised. The benefit to the DNC is that they are getting 20% of whatever is raised without ever lifting a finger, they accumulate the data that is collected (telephone #'s, addresses, emails of people who are willing to make contributions). These people are ripe for a follow up solicitation which will be more professional (especially considering that they were willing to part with their money to an amateur who just showed up at their door or stopped them on a street corner. FYI- The company that runs this claims that they don't make money doing any of this but they do. They obviously make enough to pay thousands of canvassers and pay rent in over 48 offices across the country and because they then turn around and get the contract to do all of the follow up phone calls. Also, I think they are currently being sued in a couple of states for minimum wage issues because they claim that they are not bound by wage laws because of the type of work that people are doing.

Just a note, the canvaser worked for the DNC and not for the Obama campaign. The money will likely not even be used to solely support the Obama campaign, but used to support congressional election races across the board.

It is really sad what these last remaining Hillary supporters are doing.

They are just like Republicans and should stop faking and go on and join the GOP. Or start their own party.

Stop claiming the DNC and just move on.

Find another party to poison.

JOhnathan--YOU SHOULD NOT ASS U ME these are Hillary supporters.
And they are doing NOTHING wrong---I'm trying to make sure Obama doesn't go to the center.
It's my right. It's their right.
Frankly--you seem more like a repug troll to me--and you don't want to, right?
