Whoopi Goldberg told Michelle Obama on "The View," "I'm really glad to see you because ...any time you see black folks on the news, particularly women, they have no teeth, and the teeth that they have have gold around them and they can't put a sentence together and perhaps now, we can, this is, you are helping to change a perception. I know it sounds funny and silly but If you are a black women and you are tuning in and everytime you see someone who is supposed to represent black women and women not very very fair skin women, I am talking about dark black women, I just want to say thanks."

What is the point of this other than to stir more chit?
Whoopie could be talking about poor people anywhere, no? Poor white women too?
IT AIN'T THE RACISM IT'S THE CLASSISM-AND IT GOES BOTH WAYS, NO?
Why not talk about unifying themes like universal health care?
jeez louise. Are we trying to lose to prove somebody's POINT?
What Whoopie said is true. News reporters seem to seek out the most unflattering black women to interview. Most of the women don't have a command of the English language.
That comment that Whoopi made was out of touch and uncalled for. She portrayed a negative image of black women that really does not exist, especially when the two most high profile black women are Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Oprah Winfrey.
What was on Whoopie's mind? Why would she say something like that. It seems like sometimes she really hate her own race, but the fact is she hate herself. I really wish that Michelle Obama could have made a comment to what she said, Whoopie would have been set straight. But instead, Barbara Walters cut in and changed the conversation leaving Whoopie looking dumb!
WHOOPI IS WHOOPI, BUT HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE EVER HOSTED THE TONYS
AND THE ACADEMY AWARD SHOW AS WELL!
SHE ALSO HAS WON AN OSCAR FOR GHOST!
MICHELLE OBAMA IS A CLASS ACT AND SHE RESPECTS LAURA BUSH AND
HILLARY CLINTON!
THREE VERY CLASSY LADIES!
It’s really sad to think Whoopi sees black women that way. There are millions of educated black women all over the country and more coming out of colleges all over the nation each year. As a black woman and celebrity she should be a little more encouraging.
i agree with whoopi's comment 100% maybe you people are not dark skinned black women and thus, you do not feel the effects of the negative portrayals of dark black women on television.
she said what was on her mind and a very sensitive issue in the public eye. so what? why do you people criticise her as you do? is it because you feel bringing the subject of race in the presence of michelle obama would alienate white viewers of that show? who are also potential voters? i think the obamas have proved they tend to handle this stuff well.
yes we have condoleeza rice and oprah winfrey and mrs obama ofcourse, but the very fact that those are the only ones we can think of is very sad. a lot of dark skinned women in the media are seen to be aggressive, troubled, always have a problem with somebody, cant speak properly, half naked and over-sexualized, and given the role of being unattractive etc etc. and you'll notice a lot of major black male celebs tend to marry either light skinned black women or girls of other ethnicities because dark skinned black females are seen as unflattering to them - JUST LOOK AT THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING USHER MARRYING TAMEKA FOSTER! AND ITS MAINLY PEOPLE FROM THE BLACK COMMUNITY CRITICISING HIM, BECAUSE SHE ISNT CUTE ENOUGH THEY SAY, NOT THE SORT OF EYE CANDY SUITABLE FOR A MAN IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS WHERE LOOKS MATTER!!! Michelle is obviously attractive in her own right, and at least in politics, where the sphere is somewhat different from music - because eye candy isnt the only issue - brains comes into it too - AND BOY DOES MRS OBAMA HAVE THAT, obama can have a beautiful woman on his side who just happens to be dark and black- no doubt it was a shocker to ppl - TELL YOU WHAT. HERE'S YOUR HOMEWORK TO ALL YOU WHOOPI CRITICS, WHY DONT YOU GO LOOK AT ALL THESE BLACK MALE CELEBS AND LOOK AT THEIR WIVES/GFs.
THOSE ARE ONLY A FRACTION OF THE EFFECTS OF THE NEGATIVE STEREOTYPING OF DARK BLACK WOMEN IN THE MEDIA, ALL WHOOPI DID WAS AIR DIRTY LAUNDRY OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY, AND IF YOU CANT HANDLE IT THEN SHUT YOUR MOUTH. JUST IMAGINE WHAT DARK BLACK GIRLS ALL OVER THE WORLD MUST THINK WHEN THEY SEE THESE IMAGES PORTRAYED!
That was another uncalled for response. Why do we have to be so separated within our own race. Get over it Whoopi!! Most People tend to think that her teeth are gold because they are so brown with stains. Your as bad as racist white people making everything out of a light skinned- dark-skinned issue.
I was really saddened by Whoopi's comments on the View regarding how dark-skinned black women are portrayed in the media. Even though the comments may have had some ounce of validity, they were not necessary and I found them to be very inappropriate for that moment. Nevertheless, I guess Whoopi, like myself, is especially proud of all of the attention being paid to Michelle Obama, being that she is an accomplished black with a little bit of melanin in her skin...what a novelty...NOT!
I agree with you Robert . I have looked at a lot of the black men in the media ranging from politics, arts and academia and they all have light skinned women with them . From Spike Lee to Jesse Jackson to Chris Rock. Take a good look at their wives.
The black community likes to exonerate the lighter skinned women and associate them with success while little is heard of dark skinned women.
That is what Whoopi was bringing out with Michele though in a more subtle way. Face it Michele is of a darker skin hue and she is intelligent and that is why Barack married her and I commend him for overlooking the trivalities of race that America has a country has created
So for you folks going after Whoopi for what she said I think you are indeed totally missing the point
Classism in Michelle Obama? No class at all. First of all she has the worst taste in clothes. I hate people always coming up with racism. That's their answer to everything. Don't you think it's racism when you have to vote for someone so you won't be called racist or you can't say anything negative about them cause you'll be called racist. That's why Obama was elected cause people were afraid to be called racist and now we're struck with the worse president ever and Whoopie and all you Obama freaks out there stop insulting Bush and stop putting all kinds of excuses for everything bad Obama does, it's pathic. Yet you're ready to say bad things about Bush and there is no excuses for him.
