WASHINGTON--GOP White House hopeful Mitt Romney makes his first big Illinois blitz on Friday, traveling to Champaign and Chicago for a series of fund-raisers and press conferences. He throws a media availability in Chicago this afternoon at the Chicago Club. The press advisory takes note it will be in the Robert Todd Lincoln Room. And dress up, the club bans jeans.
The Illinois GOP establishment is divided over the leading Republican contenders. It's the opposite of the Democratic primary where all the blue-chips are behind Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) Romney, the former Massaschusetts Governor, is backed for former Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and his circle. Latecomer former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) has yet to put together an Illinois operation while Romney and rivals former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) have been trolling for GOP primary backers in the Land of Lincoln.
