Sweet Dem debate special. Parsing Obama answer on sending daughters to Lab School. Report 12.

WASHINGTON---Ok, this is a parsing Obama item, of perhaps special interest for people who live in Hyde Park and Kenwood in Chicago. The debate question was whether the candidates send their kids to private or public schools. And my question is whether Obama, in his answer—he goes on about how great some Chicago Public Schools are-- kind of wanted to gloss over his reality: Obama sends his children to a private school.

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) now lives in Kenwood. He moved there in 2005. Before that his family lived in a condo in Hyde Park. His girls attend the private elementary school run by the University of Chicago. What he does not mention, curiously, is that his wife, Michelle, works at the U. of C. Many people affiliated with the U. of C. are eligible for tuition breaks.

Here’s how he answered the question:

“My kids have gone to the University of Chicago Lab School, a private school, because I taught there, and it was five minutes from our house. So it was the best option for our kids.

But the fact is that there are some terrific public schools in Chicago that they could be going to. The problem is, is that we don't have good schools, public schools, for all kids.

A U.S. senator can get his kid into a terrific public school. That's not the question. The question is whether or not ordinary parents, who can't work the system, are able to get their kids into a decent school, and that's what I need to fight for and will fight for as president of the United States.”

THIS IS THE ANNOTATED PARSE

OBAMA: My kids have gone to the University of Chicago Lab
School, a private school, because I taught there (AND WORKED IN A DOWNTOWN LAW FIRM AS WAS A STATE SENATOR IN SPRINGFIELD), and it was five
minutes from our house. (WHEN OBAMA’S DAUGHTERS STARTED AT THE LAB SCHOOL, THE FAMILY LIVED AT 5450 S. EAST VIEW PK.)

So it was the best option for our kids.

But the fact is that there are some terrific public schools in
Chicago that they could be going to. (AND THE REASON THEY DON’T IS....?) The problem is, is that we don't have good schools, public schools, for all kids. (THAT’S THE REASON?)

A U.S. senator can get his kid into a terrific public school. (CLOUT IN CHICAGO!!!! CLOUT ADMISSIONS TO MAGNET SCHOOLS IN CHICAGO? ) That's not the question. The question is whether or not ordinary parents, who can't work the system, are able to get their kids into a decent school, and that's what I need to fight for and will fight for as president of the United States.

Lynn,

Obama also didn't mention what he had for breakfast yesterday, or what the weather was like in Cleveland.

You really have an odd sense of what's important to your readers.

Are you serious? Why are you constantly complaining about Obama ??

Lynn:

Did you know that Lisa Madigan attended the socially prestigious Latin School in Chicago? The same school that Nancy Raegan attended. Political folk are just like you and me, except for the schools either they or their children attend

So why are you picking on Obama? Jesse Jackson sent his sons to St. Albans outside of Washington DC, one of the most expensive and prestigous private schools around. Sharpton sends his children to private schools. The Kennedy's sent their children to private schools. As did Clinton. Gore sent his children to St. Albans. As did many many others. So why only pick on Obama?......For that matter, over 60% of Chicago Public School teachers send their children to parochial schools. A fact/

Lynn: Apparently, you're way too naive to the fact that politicians and those who can afford it send their kids to private or parochial schools instead of the public school system. Even those in the middle class do this, so it isn't aristocratic privilege. I don't see how having a candidate's children at an inner-city school makes the parent better prepared for the task of education reform. Do you think that "No Child Left Behind" was inspired by Bush's fifth-grade experiences in a little red schoolhouse in the Dust Bowl?

We now return you to your regularly relevant media reporting.

This is a common sense question...

Who in their right mind would send their kids to a bad public school if they have financial access to better private ones?

Another smug and silly jab at our next President from a woman who apprently couldn't find anything useful or honest to do with her life. Pitiful!

Before he began his journey towards the White House, Obama's family was already pretty well off. They can afford to send their kids to private school, and this is great. So now, since he is deeply into politics, he has to lower the quality of his children's education?

FYI, I live on the same block as 5440 SE View Park. It's about 5 minutes from the U of C lab school by car, 10 by bus, 15 walking.

where they lived is most definitely incredibly close to the U of C Lab school. I like in Hyde Park, 2 minutes away from where they used to live, in the shoreland dorms. i live on the same block as the person who posted above me. and YES, U of C faculty members get quite the large discounted price for their kids to go to lab school. plus, they have to apply to the school about a year in advance before they can actually go there. and why shouldn't his kids go there, especially when he taught there? however, i'm certain if his kids were not accepted there, they would've gone to one of those terrific public schools.

however, had you done any research at all on the kind of education kids get at the u of c lab schools, you'd know that is by far, one of the top high schools, not only in Illinois, but the United States, and possibly the world. The students there get a one of a kind education and end up going to some of the greatest 4 year colleges and universities this planet has to offer. i'm proud to say i went to a public school and still ended up getting accepted into the University of Chicago...but had I gone to the lab school...who knows where else I could've gotten accepted. lay off Obama man.

Nobody's knocking Obama for choosing an elite private school for his children. If he's honest, he would want the same opportunity for all of America's children. The school voucher program would give all parents the opportunity to choose whatever educational avenue they choose. Those who believe in public education can still choose to remain there. Obama, Jackson, Sharpton and others want that opportunity only for their own. By the way, someone should remind Obama that "Public Funds" are really our money taken from us by force by the Federal Government. For many Americans, a voucher is a tax refund.

Chelsea Clinton attended public school in Little Rock, Ark. when Bill was governor. She only attended a private school when he became president. The Obamas are nothing more than elitist snobs, with no clue how real Americans live. His mom went to school in Mercer Island, WA. Check out that town. He attended private school himself. He has no flipping idea what public schools are like.
