I'm significantly older than Joe Anthony--or than the other very young folks who dominate the alternate internet universe through sites like MySpace. The dynamic of faceless political supporters operating under pseudo-names is as new to me as is the use of internet technology in the political arena.

It may well be the new frontier for successful campaigns and a good thing. But, in following this dispute between Mr. Anthony and the Obama campaign, I've come to two conclusions:

It is so new there are going to be misunderstandings and inadvertent abuses. And, among the least productive features of this brave new world is the cyber-ego.

Ego appears to be the problem here.

Joe Anthony did a great thing in response to a public servant who inspired him. But he neither owned the candidate's name nor was his the official site for said campaign. His site was not wrested from him nor were his "friends" taken from him. What he lost was the right to use a URL that gave the appearance to most of us that it was the officially sanctioned site.

It was not a national nightmare. It was not lying a country into war or gutting the Bill of Rights. It was not violating the Geneva Conventions or torturing detainees at Gitmo, Abu Ghraib or black sites. It was not illegal wiretapping or politicizing the DOJ and lying about it.

But cyber-egos and select members of the media have reacted to a dispute over a website as if it were equally damaging to democracy as we know it.

The Obama campaign has every right to manage the message going out under the candidate's name. They did not "silence" Joe Anthony to do it, they did not seize his private property.

The Anthony site exploded with "friends" after the Barack Obama announced his candidacy. It is unlikely 100,000+ "friends" joined the site for the purpose of promoting Mr. Anthony. This situation is a regrettable one with good people involved on both sides. There is no "axis of evil" here. Hundreds of Iraqis and too many Americans have died in a disastrous, ill-conceived war every single day while this territorial dispute has raged on the internet.

It is enough.

Obama owns Obama. Pure and simple. And that's a good thing.

indeed...ego does appear to be a problem here...and you just enlisted. welcome to the front ms. hansen.
