There’s been a lot of stories the past few days about early Hollywood money for 2008 Democratic frontrunners Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. On this one, Hollywood is going for a surprise ending. Call it the Spielberg primary.
In this initial stage of the race, some Hollywood moguls and stars will be helping more than one candidate—such as Dreamworks mogul Steven Spielberg. John Edwards---who is doing well in the crucial first caucus state of Iowa-- also has chits with friends in the entertainment business.
Spielberg—unlike his Dreamwork partners David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg— is keeping his options open. He is co-hosting fundraisers for both Obama and Clinton.
The Obama bash is Feb. 20 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
The Clinton funder will be in March, said Clinton spokesman Phil Singer. It will be co-hosted by Spielberg and some of the biggest West Coast Democratic donors: producer Steve Bing; Mighty Morphin Power Ranger mogel Haim Saban; supermarket magnate Ron Burkle, who was part of a team bidding in the Tribune Co. auction; and investment banker Sim Farar.
