Washington, DC - On Wednesday, April 26 Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee
(D-TX), Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security
and Claims of the House Judiciary Committee along with Congressman Danny K.
Davis (D-IL) and Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) will hold a press conference to
discuss how the Republican leadership of the 109th Congress needs to work
with Democrats to produce BALANCED Immigration and Border Security
legislation currently before this Congress.

"We must work together for real, bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform
that protects our borders, honors our values, and that we can all be proud
of," said Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

No one bill will be the total solution to our immigration dilemma however
changing the tone in the Congress will go a long way towards developing a
real compromise that works for America and America's immigrants. This is a
moment in America's history which demands rational minds and a reasoned
tone. We must do better. The President of the United States needs to step
up and convene a meeting at the White House with Members like Congresswoman
Sheila Jackson Lee and ALL the stakeholders (House and Senate) who have been
diligently working on this issue in order for us all to work TOGETHER and
solve the issue of illegal immigration.

"It is important that we as a nation convey to the world that our doors, our
borders and our hearts are still open to mutual relationships, mutual
understanding and mutual cooperation as we prepare to live in a global
environment, not one necessarily of our own choosing. There is room in our
country for law-abiding individuals from all over the world to come and be a
part of the goodness and greatness that the United States of America has to
offer," stated Congressman Danny K. Davis.

During the press conference Members will discuss why it's important to
protect and defend the American people by protecting our borders. Members
will also discuss how they will protect and defend our values as Americans
with comprehensive, humane, and realistic Immigration and Border Security
reform. "No immigration bill should be considered 'comprehensive' unless it
does something about the harsh changes that were made in our immigration
laws by the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of
1996 (IIRIRA)," stated Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
