The scoop from Washington

Monday: Soxfest at the White House

After an Oval Office meeting with the UN Secretary-General, President Bush honors the Chicago White Sox, the 2005 World Series champs at 2:35 p.m. (eastern) Monday. The White House bills this event as a photo op with remarks. Mayor Daley flew in Monday on White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorfs' plane for the daytrip.

Monday morning update: Jerry Reinsdorf is a political switch hitter. His campaign contributions listed below.
Early Monday afternoon update: With all respect to the White Sox, the big interest today is finding out from the White House why it took so long for the White House to put out the news that the Vice President accidently shot a fellow hunter. White House press secretary Scott McClellan is being peppered with questions at his daily briefing. I'll post the briefing later--as well as a report on the White Sox ceremony.

For some years now, presidents invite championship teams to the White House.
On Monday, Bush does the honors for the South Siders in the White House East Room.
White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen is getting some heat for missing the ceremony. Several Chicago Bulls skipped the April, 1997 festivities then President Clinton threw on the South Lawn following their championship season.
Besides Daley, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is coming. Obama’s been quite excited about the Sox . Obama put on a Sox uniform (the number on his jersey was a discreet 05, not 08 or 12, which would have made it a political story) and threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Game 2 of the American League Championship Series last year.
Another jock, House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) is not attending. That’s because he is keynoting an Illinois Republican Party tribute to retiring Rep. Henry Hyde (R-Ill.) Monday night. It’s a $500-per-person reception and dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago.
Reinsdorf is in the news in Washington because he is Major League Baseball’s lead negotiator on a stadium lease the MLB is trying to work out between the Washington Nationals and the district. Some D.C. council members are holding firm and don’t want to deliver a stadium giveaway to MLB—or to the still unknown future owners of the Nationals. Monday morning update...see Reinsdorf's political donations at the end of the post...
Below, from the White House, is Bush’s week ahead. Take note that Bush puts political fundraisers he attends on his public schedule--while most other elected officials do not.

Hey, Ozzie's got family obligations, so what's the big deal? More importantly, can Lynn post anything without Barack Obama in it?
