Loyola announced on Thursday the hiring of Jeremy Schoenecker as its new girls basketball coach. Schoenecker replaces longtime coach Tanya Johnson, who resigned in July. Johnson was also an associate athletic director at Loyola.
Schoenecker comes from the Faith, Hope and Charity grammar school in Winnetka where he is a physical education teacher and athletic director. Loyola AD Pat Mahoney said Schoenecker developed Faith, Hope and Charity's basketball progam there. Mahoney added that Schoenecker will also assume associate athletic director duties in the coming weeks and takes over the Ramblers' girls basketball program effective immediately.
Schoenecker played college ball at Illinois Benedictine from 1995-2000 and went to high school at Notre Dame.
This week Niles North's 6-2 center Breannah Ranger gave Wisconsin-Green Bay an oral comittment. Also this week, Morgan Park guard Erica Askew committed to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Askew is not just a basketball player at the South Side school. She is also the marching band's drum major.
Former Marshall, Rutgers and Phoenix Mercury star Cappie Pondexter will host a free girls basketball clinic Friday at Marshall High School from noon-4. The camp is for girls in grades 2-8. Registration is at 10 a.m. and forms can be found on the internet at www.cappiepondexter.com. In addition to Pondexter, Phoenix Mercury assistant coach Bridget Pettis, Mercury forward Tangela Smith and Minnesota Lynx guard Siemone Augustus will attend.
The nation's top player according to Blue Star Basketball is Houston native Kelsey Bone. Apparently, Illinois is on her list.
Bone is going to visit Illinois along with Texas A&M, South Carolina, Texas and defending national champion Tennessee.
Illinois coach Jolette Law, a former Rutgers assistant, already got verbal committments this week from two standout Illinois players in Marshall guard Adrienne GodBold and Lincoln-Way East forward Kersten Magrum.
My alma mater netted another strong player in Lincoln-Way East's Kersten Magrum. The 6-foot forward gave Illinois a verbal committment on Thursday night, according to Griffins' coach Jim Martin. Magrum chose the Illini over Nebraska, Wisconsin and DePaul. Magrum led the Griffins in scoring last season.
I may be biased because I went to school there, but when I heard that Marshall senior guard Adrienne GodBold orally committed to Illinois I was pretty darn happy for her.
GodBold was an All-Area selection last season and led the Commandos to the Class 3A state title last March. She is considered to be one of the top seniors in Illinois.
Bolingbrook guard Candace Nevels gave an oral committment to Murray State this week, coach Tony Smith said. The 5-8 senior will begin her second season on the Raiders varsity.
